Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster are happily expecting a baby in March of 2011, but the couple’s happiness could have been threatened by fish.

Lancaster is a lover of seafood and had to be counseled by her doctor about the dangers of consuming mercury-laden fish, especially during pregnancy.

“I love fish and I thought that it was healthy without understanding the high mercury levels that fish like tuna, swordfish and halibut can contain,” Lancaster, 39, told Hello! in its latest issue, according to People.

“My doctor said it was unhealthy to have so much mercury in my body, and also for conceiving babies.”

Pescatarian is better than a red meat eater, but mercury levels found in fish can affect brain and nervous system development and the FDA has issued guidelines for groups at-risk for being affected the most–pregnant women, women trying to get pregnant and children.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if one of the most popular former presidents of the United States was a spokesperson for the vegetarian and vegan diet? Well, he practically is.

As reported earlier, Bill Clinton has been sticking to a mainly vegetarian diet (he says once in awhile he’ll eat fish, but not very often) since discovering it worked so well for his weight loss before Chelsea’s wedding. In an interview for Yahoo News and the Huffington Post, Clinton brings up a study he read that showed people who followed a vegan diet and put no added cholesterol into their bodies from animal products had some pretty good health outcomes.

“Since 1986, several hundred people who have tried essentially a plant based diet–not ingesting cholesterol from any source–have seen their bodies start to heal themselves,” Bill said.

“By the way, that’s not an ad for McDonald’s in case you missed that. The hamburger in a dead man’s hand. Yes, hamburgers kill. I just thought the Hamburglar stole stuff. He steals your life.”

Glenn Beck, during a recent segment of his talk show on the new ad created by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that’s airing in the Washington, D.C. area linking McDonald’s to heart disease. Not that Beck is championing the ad, of course. He later goes on to sarcastically suggest that people will automatically start running to carrots and suggests that although the ad is a “nudge” to encourage people to eat healthier, future initiatives could include punishment and jail time.

Jennie Garth has written a letter to Congress in support of H.R 5504, Improving Nutrition for America’s School Children act.

Garth specifically addressed Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house, regarding the bill.

“I’m writing to you because I am passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles. This past year, I have been working to educate and motivate children to make healthy choices,” says Garth. “But nutrition education isn’t enough. We also have to make sure that every child in American can find healthy foods in their school cafeteria.” (more…)

Lady Gaga‘s meat dress for the MTV VMAs not only looked disgusting, but smell the part too.

The dress, designed by Franc Fernandez, was designed from REAL raw meat cuts from a local butcher (hey, hey, should we at least give him credit for not making it travel and using more emissions?). Gaga may be hot, but she’s not warm enough to cook meat, and as you may suspect, the raw dead flesh began to smell almost instantly, much to Eminem‘s displeasure.

The rapper refused to sit by Gaga and a source told The Mirror, “Marshall said he didn’t want to be sat next to a pile of raw meat all night. He said it smelled pretty bad.”

The old saying that “I’d like to die with,” inserting favorite vice is illustrated in a new Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine commercial that airs in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, September 16th, 2010. The group is targeting McDonald’s restaurants, saying the fast food giant is responsible for the poor health of so many Americans living in the nation’s capital.

The commercial shows a man lying in the morgue with a half-eaten burger in his hand. After a few seconds of a grieving loved one hovering over him, the commercial closes with McDonald’s signature golden arches tracing over his feet with the words, “I was Lovin’ It.” The voiceover then says, “High cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attacks. Tonight, make it vegetarian.”

Like many politicians who fall down the slippery slope of indiscretion, vice president Joe Biden needs to keep his wiener (s) to himself.

PETA agrees, and after seeing Biden pass out hot dogs to returning troops during a taping of Stephen Colbert‘s popular Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report, the animal rights group wrote Biden a letter, suggesting next time he hand out veggie dogs, citing how many Americans are too out of shape to serve their country hat might benefit from a vegetarian diet.  It’s a great idea, but Biden will never be as sexy as those models on Capitol Hill during National Veggie Dog Day.

“One in four Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 [is] too fat for military service, and research shows that vegans are far less likely to suffer from obesity as well as leading killer diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes,” the letter begins.
