Mark 2011 as the year for veggie babies!

Although we’ve been disappointed in the number of celebrity women who report eating meat during pregnancy after years of being vegetarian, we’re pretty certain the pregnant veg ladies of this year will be the best role models for vegetarian/vegan pregnancies ever!

Silverstone has been blogging her preg veg experiences on her site, The Kind Life and Milano can’t get enough broccoli.

But what about the dozens of other pregnant vegs out there who might be experiencing a little steak cravings even though they’ve been eating seitan for the past 20 years?

Mike Tyson Enraged By Meaty Breath

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 30th, 2011 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink, Nutrition-Health-Fitness.

Since Mike Tyson embarked on a vegan diet, losing over 100 pounds in the process, he doesn’t even want to smell meat aromas.

That includes on someone’s breath.

Tyson shared this with the New York Times, while adding he wants nothing in his body that “that’s going to enrage me — no processed food, no meat.”

We already know vegetables can make your armpits smell nicer. Conversely, animal products like meat, dairy and eggs may leave your mouth hungry for a mint or two.

It’s a good day when mainstream brands of junk food recognize everybody needs healthier junk food.

Frito-Lay has announced it’s cleaning up the ingredient lists in more than 60 of its products, including Lay’s flavored potato chips, Tostitos tortilla chips, multigrain SunChips and Rold Gold pretzels.

Say good-bye to FD&C Red 40 and monosodium glutamate,  two items linked to hyperactivity in children and headaches and obesity, respectively. Instead, Frito-Lay performed taste tests among customers and found ways to incorporate items like molasses, malted barley flour and paprika to improve the flavors of its products.

Tim Fink, director of Frito-Lay’s seasonings team said it best when he said: “If the ingredient isn’t in a consumer’s cupboard, can we get it off the label?”

So what can we expect to see on the changed labels?

Here’s an example of the old and new labels on Frito-Lay’s Salt and Vinegar Chips.

Cruz told Shape she’s been juicing regularly for several years.

“I noticed a difference in my body–how I feel, how my skin looks,” Cruz said.

Despite being “kicked out of school,” Jamie Oliver has successfully completed filming season 2 of his Food Revolution show. After the Los Angeles Unified School District refused to let him into any of their cafeterias, Oliver, being the feather ruffling genius that he is, continued his mission of revamping diets of some of the poorest families in the city with his mobile food truck and other antics.

Will it work? It probably won’t be easy.

As one woman in the preview mentions, “It is easier to get a gun, crack, or a prostitute in a lot of areas in Los Angeles before you can get a tomato.”

In case you didn’t hear the good news, McDonald’s has been trumped as the #1 fast-food chain by Subway restaurants. Worldwide, Subway now has 33,749 restaurants while McDonald’s trails at 32,737. This means more places for a healthier sandwich loaded with fresh veggies and even a veggie patty at some locations. It also means that as a business, McDonald’s needs to kick up its game to stay nose to nose with its major competitor.

In a letter to James Skinner, CEO of McDonald’s Corporation, Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, says McDonald’s can cut healthcare expenses for its employees (it’s been thinking of dropping healthcare altogether) if it puts them on the PCRM’s 21-Day Kickstart program.
