Quantcast Vegetarian StarEmily Deschanel Pregnant. No Non-Vegan Cravings Reported Yet.

Bones actress Emily Deschanel has announced she and newlywed husband David Hornsby are expecting their first child together.

Alyssa Milano, Alicia Silverstone and now Emily?

Mark 2011 as the year for veggie babies!

Although we’ve been disappointed in the number of celebrity women who report eating meat during pregnancy after years of being vegetarian, we’re pretty certain the pregnant veg ladies of this year will be the best role models for vegetarian/vegan pregnancies ever!

Silverstone has been blogging her preg veg experiences on her site, The Kind Life and Milano can’t get enough broccoli.

But what about the dozens of other pregnant vegs out there who might be experiencing a little steak cravings even though they’ve been eating seitan for the past 20 years?

Caity McCardell has written an article at VegFamily that gives several suggestions for staying on course.

Obviously having all your faux meat and cheese substitutes on hand is a good idea, but there may be other items to keep close by, especially if you went vegetarian or vegan for principles.

Watching those PETA slaughterhouse videos  may do the trick.

Keep good old, tried-and-true animals rights propaganda around. A pamphlet from Vegan Outreach will do. Does going back to eating meat really attract you now?

And keeping an animal that’s very similar to what you’re about to eat in terms of warmth, love, personality and intelligence can also make you think twice.

Do you have an animal companion? If you do, look carefully at them when you’re having a non-vegan craving. They can represent for you the animals trapped in the business of factory farming, reminding you of the reality, the truth, of the industry. Your cat is all bones, blood, heart and soul – and so are those animals you’re craving. This simple step helped me the most of all the tactics I used.

And  never use the excuse of one mistake to fall back into your old lifestyle once the baby arrives and the cravings go away.

“You can always jump right back up on the wagon and eliminate the animal bits again,” McCardell writes. “Your self-confidence and happiness are important to your baby, your family, and the animals.”

I thought the exact same thing. My three favorite actresses and my biggest role models in life, all pregnant. LOL.

Nutritional yeast is a very beneficial vegan food to incorporate into the diet when pregnant (and any time really). It is loaded with numerous important vitamins & minerals from iron to folic to zinc, as well as B12 if the proper variety is obtained. A nice cheezy flavor, it goes great on popcorn, pastas, pizza, salads, soups, avocado dips, etc. Should be a shelf staple of every veg kitchen.
