Paula Deen On TV Is Good For You–Food Panel Agrees

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian, Videos.

Padma Lakshmi, Food 52’s Amanda Hesser, celebrity chef Charlie Trotter and author Kathleen Collins made up a panel that recently discussed whether or not food TV does anyone any good at the “Food on the Tube: How TV Shapes the Way We Think About Food” discussion.

Sure, we need to learn to cook versus ordering out, taking out and boiling processed packaged contents in the microwave every night, but do food television programs teach or are viewers just there for entertainment?

Celebrity chef Trotter, who owns Charlie Trotter, a restaurant that features an entire vegetable menu, got his first lessons in cooking in college from reading The Vegetarian Epicure and admits, like the rest of the panel, he didn’t have anyone teaching him to cook early in life.

55th Annual Drama Desk Awards - Arrivals

If you had any doubts about Anne Hathaway‘s current vegetarian status (as she’s always flip flopping), look no further than this article because nothing says I’m no longer vegetarian than discussing how much fun it is to feel up on chicken with a buttered hand.

This coming a little after a year after announcing she was a full blown vegan on television

“The other day I roasted a chicken that I have got to say was awesome. But I used a lot of butter and it’s not hard to make chicken taste good when you use a lot of butter. I am not a very imaginative cook, I follow recipes, but I really do enjoy it. That and baking. I used to be a vegetarian but obviously I am not a very committed vegetarian when you roast chicken.”

But wait! There’s more chicken stories and tales of eating crickets and working up the balls to eat intestines.

The Dome 54 - Show

Gabriella Cilmi is thinking of eating meat on the down low while she’s touring with vegetarian Leona Lewis who’s banned such items for her crew on the road.

“The catering is vegan. I’m from an Italian family, we love meat so I’ll have to smuggle in some salami or something,” she said, according to The Mirror.

Um, no honey, you should see the experience as a learning opportunity and respect your boss’ wishes.

Maybe she could ask the catering crew to whip up a faux salami recipe in the kitchen.

If this chick were touring with Morrissey, she’d get canned faster than the pack of sardines she hid in her bosom.

Nicolas Cage Won’t Eat Animals That Have Bad Sex

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues, Not So Vegetarian.

Jerry Bruckheimer Hand And Footprint Ceremony At Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Nicolas Cage is by no means vegetarian, but he’s chosen a very strange factor to determine what meat not to eat.

Cage says that pigs have the most undignified sex, and for that reason, he won’t touch pork.

Birds and fish get it on beautifully, though, and are fair game.

“I love all animals. I have a fascination with fish, birds, whales – sentient life – insects, reptiles,” Cage said.

“I actually choose the way I eat according to the way animals have sex. I think fish are very dignified with sex. So are birds.”

“But pigs, not so much. So I don’t eat pig meat or things like that. I eat fish and fowl.”

Seems odd that Cage eats the ones who loves, the so called “sentient” ones.

Has anyone told him that pigs are some of the most sentient animals, having intelligence beyond a toddler?

What exactly it is about the fish and birds’ game that makes Nicolas proud is unknown, but if all the creatures start getting their thing on in the sloppiest of ways, maybe he’ll start admiring the reproductive cycle of wheat and soy.

SHREK FOREVER AFTER MOVIE PREMIERE AT THE GIBSON AMPHITHEATRE AT UNIVERSAL CITY. LOS ANGEL

If you had any hope that Cameron Diaz was going back to being a vegetarian, those dreams are about to be squashed.

The Shrek actress told SELF she went back to eating pork because it tasted so “damned good.”

If you prefer to get jiggy with a piggy, there’s no better time than now to explore the options of fake bacon, as there are numerous damned good tasting meatless options out there.

Try the B.L.T quality of Lightlife Smart Bacon or the fake McMuffin qualities of Yves Meatless Canadian Bacon.

Whether you’re motivated by emotion or the rational, thinking either “Babe” or “factory farms and swine flu go together like spandex on hot bottoms (or maybe the last part’s not so rational), these alternatives should keep your cart clear out of the meat section of the deli.

Sarah Palin speaks at National Rifle Association convention in Charlotte, North Carolina

Sarah Palin gave a speech at the National Rifle Association (NRA) convention where she criticized animal rights activists, advocates of limiting hunting in Alaska and anyone she considered to be threatening the second amendment.

After all, they’re all shooting deer in Hollywood.

“I have bad news for those groups,” Palin said, according to the Charlotte Observer. “Bambi’s mother is dinner – even in L.A.”

“Where do those people think their venison comes from? The deer didn’t die of natural causes. It wasn’t road kill.”

Why aren’t Palin and fur wearing Kelis BFFs already?

Besides protection, Palin may feel guns are a key aspect of social gatherings.

She once had a baby shower at an Alaska gun range.

Makes you wonder how some really celebrate a “shotgun” wedding.

2010 Lucille Lortel Awards Benefit - Arrivals

Saffron Burrows was a vegetarian for 25 years before landing a role in the 2008 film, The Guitar.

“As a kid, I felt you don’t eat anything you wouldn’t kill yourself,” Burrows told Backstage.

But her character Melody Wilder ate meat, and soon the line between character and self disappeared and Burrows returned to the steak.

So now that she’s eating meat again, does that mean weekend hunting trips?

A lot of words come to mind after hearing this, from disgusting to astonishing, considering the Law & Order: Criminal Intent actress had spent more than half her life not eating animals.

It’s quite easy to put fake meat substitutes in place of the real thing for the screen and it’s been done before.

Kal Penn‘s character Kumar chowed down on veggie burgers when he and Harold finally made it to White Castle.

And Lake Bell ate faux ham for Christmas dinner during Pride and Glory.

Grand Opening Of Thomas Keller's Bouchon In Beverly Hills

The Animal Protection & Rescue League has organized a protest against celebrity chef Thomas Keller outside his three restaurants because he serves foie gras.

Several other animal rights groups, Animal Protection & Rescue League, Orange County People for Animals, In Defense of Animals, and Compassion Over Killing have launched a campaign about foie gras and will be outside Keller’s restaurants holding banners depicting the conditions inside Hudson Valley Foie Gras, Keller’s supplier.

Foie gras is produced by force feeding geese so much their livers swell several times their normal sizes.

The metal pipes placed in their throats for feeding often injure the digestive tract as well.

“As a veterinarian, I find foie gras to be a disease rather than a delicacy,” states Elliot Katz, DVM, President of IDA. “The liver’s function is to process toxins, and a liver in this grossly enlarged state from force feeding cannot function properly.”

The protests will be held at the following restaurants on Saturday, May 8.

Per Se, 10 Columbus Circle, New York, NY 10019 – Time: noon
Bouchon, 235 N. Canon Dr. Beverly Hills, CA 90210 – Time: 7:30pm
French Laundry, 6640 Washington St., Yountville, CA 94599 – Time 7pm
