Isle of Wight Festival - Day 3

Simple Minds’ Jim Kerr may be excited to start a brand new solo career at the age of 50, but he still feels like crap on an everyday basis.

The former husband of Chrissie Hynde whom he has one daughter with, recently admitted there’s something about his vegan diet that’s not going so well.

“I feel like sh*t,” he told the Times Online. “Don’t be fooled by appearances. I’ve been vegetarian since the night I met Chrissie Hynde but I was still eating fish. So at Christmas I gave up fish, I gave up dairy, I gave up coffee and now I feel like crap.”

Could Jim have benefited from picking up a copy of Living Vegan for Dummies?

The book serves as an all in one guide for starting the lifestyle, from recipes to pantry stocking to fake meats.

It even comes with a convenient cheat sheet for speaking the vegan language.

Claude Kelly has a string of hit songs written for performers like Leona Lewis, Britney Spears, Adam Lambert, and Michael Jackson to his name, but he’s not satisfied with words being his only form of creative expression

According to the May/June 2010 issue of VegNews, Kelly is working on mastering the art of the vegan cupcake. He become inspired to open up a vegan bakery or restaurant after eating at One Lucky Duck restaurant in NYC.

“I love the way [being vegan] makes me feel,” Kelly said. “Food is fuel–it affects my body, my brain–and my brain is the biggest part of my job.”

Justin Bieber has been called out on Twitter for messing around with fast food.

After the “U Smile” singer wrote, “Fast food always hits the spot,” in a recent update, Katy Perry responded on her Twitter account with, “Eat your spinach young man! -adopted mother.”

Bieber isn’t alone in his lunch choices. Using data from Project EAT (Eating Among Teens), Researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health have found that over 20% of teenagers consume food fast more than three times a week!

Perry doesn’t have much room to talk, as she once professed her love for the double-double burger at In-N-Out. Given his popularity and influence, Bieber should stop hitting the spot with large fries and cheeseburgers. Or at least stop Tweeting about it.

And do what the elder says, even if the elder doesn’t do it.

Paul McCartney performs in concert in Miami

Paul McCartney is set to perform at a benefit concert that will help both the Old Vic Theatre in London and his Meat Free Monday campaign.

According to Contact Music, the vegetarian musician was recruited by Kevin Spacey to play to raise money for the theatre who’s roof is leaking and is in need of repairs since it was damaged during World War II.

The event, which also includes an art auction, will have a portion of the proceeds go towards McCartney’s Meat Free Monday campaign.

“We are thrilled Paul McCartney will lend his extraordinary talents on the evening alongside brilliant artists who’ve generously donated their artworks for auction,” said Spacey. “It’s set to be quite a night.”

The concert will take place at The Boiler House at Battersea Power Station and tickets are available starting from $750 (£500) up to $15,000 (£10,000) for a premium table for 10.

No word on if vegetarian snacks will be served, but if Sir McCartney has anything to do with it, concert goers might be in for a tasty meatless treat in addition to Lady Madonna and Michelle.

Treehugger posted a video from a talk given by Moby and Miyun Park, the two co-editors of the book about factory farming, Gristle, during one of their book promotion appearances.

Moby reiterated what he’s said before in interviews about how subsidies to big farms not only make it harder for people to buy healthier, organic, plant based food, but contribute to more destruction of the environment and more animals killed, as these subsidies are also used to start new farms.

Moby has previously estimated that beef would cost around $30 a pound if subsidies to the meat industry were removed.

Definitely no longer a value meal at McDonald’s, that’s for sure.

Although we’re still trying to figure out why the “Fat Mike” burger on the Thistle Hill Tavern menu is a beef one given the NOFX musician turned to vegetarianism several years ago, reviews of the restaurant in Brooklyn are good.

Martini Boys states that, “Chef Rebecca Weitzman has constructed a menu to appease both carnivores and legitimate vegetarians,” and recent reviews on Yelp! are praising the vegetarian options.

“For dinner, we had the vegan burgers – my fiance had his with bleu cheese, and i had mine with cheddar. we both agreed they were the BEST veggie burgers we’ve ever had! the buns were homemade and tasted like it! the fries were thick, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. and to top it off – the ketchup was also homemade! unbelievably good.”

And maybe even the meat eaters will trade the Fat Mike grass fed burger for the vegan one sometime.

“I think the coolest thing about the menu is that there is a ton of vegetarian options. I’m a meat eater, but don’t want a steak everytime I go out. More importantly, each of those meat-free dishes looked tempting enough to me to forgo meat for the night. I will definitely be back, and I will definitely bring friends.”

Green Pea Falafel, zucchini pancakes, charred kale and spiced nuts and seeds are several other  meatless options available.

Fat Mike, from the American punk rock band formed in San Francisco, NOFX, is one of the owners of the Thistle Hill Tavern in Brooklyn, New York.

Fat Mike once sang a song mocking vegetarians, and although Vegetarian Mumbo Jumbo contains phrases like, “I don’t feel bad about/Eating something that’s dead/So why should I be sad/For cows getting hit in the head?” he later became a vegetarian, citing that, “people change.”

Definitely for the better.

However, the menu at Thistle Hill Tavern co-owned by the NOFX musician has the “Fat Mike” burger being a beefy, grass fed one, despite the fact there’s a vegan burger also on the menu which comes with fried fennel.

Might this have been coined based on Fat Mike’s days of Vegetarian Mumbo Jumbo?

Or did Fat Mike make a change again for the worse?

Jamie Oliver is still disappointed that french fries count as a vegetable in school lunches, but if the great Meat Free Monday champion Paul McCartney sits down for a snack of these with his daughter at NYC’s Serendipity 3, you gotta give them some credit.

As long as they’re not fried in trans fat oil and don’t contain any meat flavorings.

And while a plain old tator doesn’t make the grade “A,” a sweet potato contains more than enough of your recommended daily allowance of the vitamin.

In walks the sweet potato fry.

Alexia has a variety you can start with.

A balance of sweet and salty in the frozen foods section with 70% of recommended Vitamin A and only 5 grams of non-saturated, non-trans fat.

If french fries are the vegetables that will save the children, these must be the biggest lifeboats that hold the most thrown overboard.
