“I’m not entirely sure who understands and who doesn’t understand what it is that we’re doing, but something I wanted to do with those pro-vegan shirts, was to create a very poppy, very palatable image that draws people in and that will appeal to people and then have it juxtaposed with a very serious message – to really drive that message home. Because if you’re drawn in with something pretty and then you’re met with something serious you’re already there. I think it would be difficult to not understand the message of those shirts but a lot of people are really obtuse, so there’s no saying.”

Common Celebrate Just Wright

Rapper and actor Common had his publicist take care of the daunting task of asking about ingredients for his lunch at Busboys and Poets for an interview with the Washington Post.

The Just Wright actor got a vegan pepperoni pizza with soy cheese and faux meat with lots of other veggies on a whole wheat crust.

“I think the way we choose to eat is definitely important,” he said. “I was vegan for a minute and I really commend those who can eat vegan. Then I was vegetarian. Now I eat fish, but I try not to eat too much dairy. I’m excited about this pizza.”

Common shared a story about when he did an ad for People with the Ethical Treatment of Animals that his family and friends saw on a billboard in New York.

“They put those ads up on this billboard in Brooklyn and my friends would ride past it and just laugh,” he said. “It did look kind of funny.”

Apparently, this vegan pizza at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C. is darn good, because Common ordered another one “to go.”

And these are some of the most veggie friendly waiters and bards in the district.

Besides “The Vegan” pizza with “vegan mozzarella, mushroom, onion, green and red peppers, vegan pepperoni with marinara or garlic and oil on a whole-wheat crust,” Busboys and Poets also offers vegan calzones, falafel, veggie burgers, vegan queasadillas and coconut tofu bites with plum sauce.

New York Premiere Of Just Wright

Although we love our pescatarians who have removed all animals but seafood from their diets, we do want to get one thing straight.

Fish is meat too.

And presents health risks like mercury poisoning.

And it’s not the best thing for the environment.

But at least rapper Common knows fish is meat and won’t call himself a “vegetarian”, although he emphasizes seafood is the only non plant item he’ll eat.

“I eat fish and that’s it,” the former vegan told Metromix. “That’s the only meat that I eat. I think that’s meat to me. If you eat fish, it’s fish meat.”

The rapper who’ll be starring as a basketball player who bonds with his physical therapist played by Queen Latifah in Just Wright, gets the rest of his protein from favorite veggie foods of beans and rice and vegetarian hot dogs.

"I Like Food, Food Tastes Good"

I Like Food, Food Taste Good is a collection of recipes from bands that features an entire chapter on vegetarian main courses.

In fact, from glancing at the table of contents, it looks like meatless recipes make up about a 1/4 of the book.

The Night Before Mac-and-Cheese, Tofu Pot Pie, Semi Raw Everyday Pasta, The Karate Kid and Uncle Kyle’s Avocado Tacos all sound tasty with an interesting story.

Death Cab For Cutie‘s Veggie Sausage with Peanut Butter sandwich is included in the mix.

Vegetarian music enthusiasts, this is something you’ll want to add to your collection.

Peruvian operatic tenor Juan Diego Florez performs in Moscow

Peruvian operatic tenor Juan Diego Flórez is certain that maintaining vocal health starts with good physical health.

Beef and chicken don’t make for good physical health, so he stays clear of it to keep the pipes working.

“Sleeping well is the main thing. And eating well; I’m vegetarian, which works for me,” Flórez said to The Independent.

Wonder if he also goes easy on the dairy before a big performance, as some vocalists believe it creates phlegm and interferes with vocal quality.

Flórez is best known for his roles in bel canto operas.

KROQ Weenie Roast 2007

In the words of the dysfunctional Jerry Springer contestant, Social Distortion’s Mike Ness says, “You Don’t Know Me!” (Feel free to insert finger snap.)

That’s what the musician told Spinner during an interview.

“My writing and my stage stuff, that’s just one side of me,” Ness said. “There are so many others people don’t know — being a vegetarian, my spiritual beliefs. There are dimensions to anybody.”

Ness has recorded a PSA for vegetarianism for PETA, so it’s not like he’s hiding in the closet or anything.

Maybe he just needs to speak up a little more. Watch his “Meat’s Not Green” video below.

“Our wildlife, what is left of it, we’re going to lose if we don’t man up and step up and be responsible,” Ness says in the clip.

Paul McCartney performs in concert in Miami

The British Beef Association has got a beef with Paul McCartney.

After making comments on a BBC radio show about the livestock industry contributing to climate change, the association demands the BBC give it air time to respond to the allegations McCartney made.

The association claimed this would be in the interests of the BBC’s “reputation for balance and accuracy,” according to Spinner.

McCartney told BBC, “It started off with the United Nations saying the livestock industry is a bigger demon, as far as global warming is concerned, than the whole of the transport industry put together.”

“I wrote to millions of people like Gordon Brown and the leaders of this and that country and saying, ‘Do you think this is an interesting idea?'”

“Since then, it has caught on and I understand that [chef] Gordon Ramsay has said that one meat-free day a week is a good idea and I understand that [fellow chef] Jamie Oliver too has said that it’s a good idea, so that’s why I got involved.

The BBC has not responded as to whether the British Beef Association will get their turn.
