Brian May Campaigns With Labour Candidate Dan Norris

Queen guitarist Brian May campaigned in the region of Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency recently, an area that is being targeted by the Tory party.

He was accompanied by supporters from his Save Me Campaign, which he created to educate and encourage people to help preserve many of the laws that already exist that protect animals.

The party is of interest to May because it has expressed desire in repealing the Hunting Act of 2004.

“I want to say ‘please be aware that the Conservatives may try to look moderate and nice but they are still steeped in blood sports’.”

“The country will be awash in the blood of innocent animals if the Conservatives get back in, and I just want people to be aware of that.”

A series of full page ads have been placed in newspapers by UK animal rights group PAL (Political Animal Lobby) warning people that if the Tories win the election, the fox hunting ban will be lifted.

Paul McCartney performs in concert in Miami

Paul McCartney‘s Meat Free Monday campaign has just gone high tech.

The campaign that encourages eating less meat to save the environment is now being promoted as a series of mobile phone applications that allows users to read articles and essays written by Sir McCartney.

Not that Paul himself would prefer it that way.

“I’m not really techie at all and never have been,” McCartney told Today Program presenter Sarah Montague, according to BBC, adding that he still likes reading regular books.

Still, so much of our communication and information gathering is done electronically, so this is a great way to get the message out and save paper.

You’ve got your meatless education from McCartney on one application, and the VegOut application which tells you where to find the restaurant that serves lentil soup.

McCartney said idea for his Meat Free Monday campaign came after, “the UN saying that livestock is a bigger demon to global warning than the whole of the transport industry put together. This wasn’t coming from a vegetarian society but the UN.”

Bubbles, The Chimpanzee

Animal Planet will air a documentary on the late Michael Jackson and his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles.

Michael Jackson and Bubbles the Chimp is scheduled to air on Tuesday, June 22 at 9/10C, a date very close to last year’s death of the pop star.

According to The Futon Critic, the film will provide unseen footage of Jackson and the chimp, “revealed through those who witnessed their relationship.”

As Bubbles grew older, he became aggressive and Michael was forced to give him up.

Bubbles now lives in a Florida sanctuary, the Center for Great Apes.

The Offspring Perform At The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater

If your favorite item was taken off the menu at a restaurant, why not stage a peaceful protest?

Or at least talk to the manager about bringing it back.

Alkaline Trio started its band in the Chicago area, so Matt Skiba was well acquainted with vegetarian and mostly vegan restaurant on Halsted, The Chicago Diner.

Skiba loved the Vegan Caesar Salad so much, when it disappeared from the menu, he requested it be put back on there.

Skiba told VegNews, “Chicago Diner is amazing. I love that place. I’ve been eating there since I can remember. Two years ago they took my favorite thing off the menu. Initially it was called the Seitanic Caesar Salad, this vegan Caesar salad that was absolutely killer. Then they changed the name of it-they have funky, fun names for a lot of dishes-and then, I don’t know why they did it, but they took it off the menu and I was so bummed about it that I went in and complained. I was nice about it and they obviously make great food aside from that salad, but I politely protested and said that they should put it back on the menu. And they did! About two weeks ago I got a phone call from a friend of mine saying that they put the Caesar back on the menu.”

From the looks of the current Spring/Summer offerings, the Vegan Caesar Chicken Salad still has a place at the diner.

Jason Mraz Turning Avocado Farm Organic

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Gardening, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Jason Mraz performs at the 27th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards in Hollywood

Jason Mraz is about to turn his famous avocado farm organic.

During an interview with Hitflix, Mraz said, “The grove company has been [harvesting the groves], but we’re about to take over because we noticed over the past few years the helicopter would come by and spray the area and we’re done with that. So we’re kind of taking control and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Glad to hear it won’t be raining chemicals on the green fruit anymore.

The process of officially certifying a farm organic in the United States requires three years of no application of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and GMOs.

Interested farmers should also take steps to ensure there won’t be any contamination from the adjacent, non-organic farm that still uses the helicopter to kill bugs.

Other requirements include the use of commercially available organic seeds not treated with prohibited synthetic materials like fungicides, and not using sewage sludge or irradiation.

It was the sewage sludge used as fertilizer that got the White House Garden’s designation officially changed from “organic” to just a regular garden.

Of course, if Jason’s not interested in an “official” status, it’s still great he and his neighbors will be using more environmentally friendly methods to grow avocados.

If you can get past that episode of Dinner with the Band that had Rufus Wainwright as a guest at the table for a meal of rabbit food (and no, we don’t mean greens), you might be excited to hear he’s a fan of macrobiotic food.

In the New York Post‘s 10 of the Moment article, Wainwright says he likes to frequent Souen on East 13th Street.

“It’s a great place to get macrobiotic food, but the only problem is you get gassy. But it’s cool to stink,” he said.

Can’t smell any worse than fried rabbit legs.

Souen is very vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Since some types of fish are sometimes used in macrobiotic eating, this is a place for pescatarians as well.

Try the homemade seitan dumplings filled with “seitan, chinese cabbage, scallion, shiitake, garlic, and ginger.”

You may stink later, but the food will smell great as you eat it.

Meatloaf Has A Thing For Curry

Music Cares Man of the Year Dinner IHO Neil Diamond

Meatloaf is known to turn down meat, something which helped him shed a lot of weight.

The Daily Record is reporting the slimmer vegetarian often enjoys curry at his favorite Indian restaurant.

Curry, a dish made of spicy vegetables over rice, can differ depending on which region of Asia or India it originates from, according to WiseGeek.

Punjab curry, for example, involves wheat instead of rice while Malai uses coconut milk.

Regardless of origin, most curry dishes have the common ingredient of turmeric, which give curries their yellow colors, and many incorporate the spices of ginger, garlic, chillies, pepper, cumin and and coriander.

The Independent Film Channel’s Dinner With The Band debuted its second season with host and chef Sam Mason inviting singer Rufus Wainwright to cook up schnitzel, spaetzle and sauerkraut.

The schnitzel, a dish traditionally made with meat anyway, was a rabbit rolled in breadcrumbs.

As a sheltered vegetarian who grew up on organic tofu and Amy’s dinners, only being forced to look at the norm animal entrees of chicken and beef, the idea of bunny burgers was unbelievable and required some extra investigation (April Fool’s is over, right?).

Those bunnies only exist to lay chocolate covered, cream filled Cadbury eggs around Easter.

Sure enough, there are even USDA recommendations for cooking Thumper, along with this “how to video” you’ll see below.

If future Dinner with the Band shows are anything like this week’s premiere, you need to run like the wind from this opening act before the main group even takes the stage.
