PJ Harvey Lamb Castration Stories Upset Activists

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 24th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

P.J. Harvey

PJ Harvey has angered animal activists after revealing she castrated young sheep as a child growing up on her family’s farm in Southern England.

Harvey told Mojo Magazine, “That’s what you do on a farm. You have to because you don’t want every male lamb to turn into a ram. You only want the best looking lambs: the ones you think are going to be strong, and turn into good sires.”

“The others, you have to conserve their energy to go into the meat. You don’t want them expending their energy, wanting to mate… It’s a very delicate operation: you need to hold the lamb in the right position, because it is painful for them.”

“I didn’t particularly like doing it, but if you work with animals, there are things you have to do which you don’t like doing: you follow in your mother and father’s footsteps.”

Castrating sheep sounds worse than your typical circumcision.

Lady Gaga

Oh, dear Gaga.

While arriving at the Grammy’s in an egg you would later hatch out of is not nearly as smelly as the meat dress you wore last year, we’d still rather see you in some animal-free attire, like lettuce leaves.

If you missed the singer’s grand arrival being carried by her servants, or, uh, people paid too much money to join in on the ridiculousness, you can view that below. However, it’s also a perfect time to discuss what goes into an egg label.

Free-roaming? Cage-free? Certified Humane? Gaga Approved?

Confusing terms such as those mentioned above can all be deciphered on the Humane Society’s article on Egg Carton Labels: A brief guide to labels and animal welfare.

JP, Chrissie, & The Fairground Boys

“I want everyone to join me in saying a big ‘no’ to milk from mega-dairies. Why should people put up with factory milk from battery cows when we’ve already proven we don’t want eggs from battery hens? It’s hardly the milk of human kindness. We can do better than this, so please go to www.notinmycuppa.com and tell the supermarkets how you feel about this today’.”

Chrissie Hynde, on a proposal to bring Nocton Dairies, a mega-dairy farm to Britain. The facility would house several thousand cows in indoor sheds and require each animal to produce 10,000 liters of milk each year, some sources cite as being as much as 43% higher than the national average. Cows subjected to produce large volumes of milk like that is expected at a large farms are more likely to experience medical issues, such as mastitis, an infection in the cow’s udder.

Janet Jackson Targeted At Concert By Anti-Fur Activists

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 4th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Female Singers, Fur.

Janet Jackson

Animal rights activists in the Philippines staged a protest outside a Janet Jackson concert recently and also met with the singer’s representatives because she promotes fur through a series of advertisements for the label Blackglama.

The activists wore grim reaper costumes and carried placards reading phrases such as, “Janet: Animals suffer and die on fur farms,” “Janet: Fur is Dead,” and “Fur Shame.”

And yes, if you remember reading previous posts on Janet, she is a vegetarian who sometimes eats vegan and has also publicly gushed over how great vegan cookies, soy milk and faux chicken nuggets taste.

The irony.

The activists say the demand for fur contributes to loss of biodiversity and that the industry uses endangered species.
