Alicia Silverstone’s “Time Stands Still” Vegan Costumes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 in Actresses, Business, Fashion.

Time Stands Still Broadway Opening Night - Arrivals & Curtain Call

Alicia Silverstone dressed cruelty-free during her performance of Time Stands Still, and she recently took to her blog to discuss some of the companies the play’s costume designer, Rita Ryack, patronized to find outfits for Silverstone’s character, Mandy.

You may have heard of Alternative Outfitters, home to vegan shoes, handbags and other accessories.

Ryack shopped there, as well as Anthropologie, which she loved because of its use of natural fibers.

“I do worry about synthetics a little, though – because who knows what goes into their production?” Ryack said.

There are many synethic materials some advise against wearing, due to the chemicals involved in the production and finishing.

The best natural vegan fabric?

Cotton!

Ryack also liked using Etsy stores because they helped small businesses.

Soundwave Festival Sydney

“I’m not entirely sure who understands and who doesn’t understand what it is that we’re doing, but something I wanted to do with those pro-vegan shirts, was to create a very poppy, very palatable image that draws people in and that will appeal to people and then have it juxtaposed with a very serious message – to really drive that message home. Because if you’re drawn in with something pretty and then you’re met with something serious you’re already there. I think it would be difficult to not understand the message of those shirts but a lot of people are really obtuse, so there’s no saying.”

Kelis MTV Video About Fur Hat And Where To Get Your Fake One

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 15th, 2010 in Fashion, Female Singers, Fur, Videos.

Kelis sounds off on her PETA feud about that famous fur hat in this MTV video.

She says she thinks it was strange she got a letter from them, considering she’s worn “way more” fur than what she was wearing when the controversy ignited.

Kelis justifies her fashion choice with the fact the weather was “freezing” and she loves the hat.

Right.

Perfectly good excuses to buy something killed for the sake of vanity purposes.

Avoid the Kelis fur pas and opt for a faux fur hat instead.

Watch for Kelis’ excuses around minute 4:00.

Ginnifer Goodwin "VegNews"

Ginnifer Goodwin is on the cover of the May/June 2010 issue of VegNews Magazine.

The magazine has titled this issue the “Big Love” one, and not just because of the actress’ hit HBO television series. There is also a section on vegan weddings!

Goodwin discussed the factors that led her to become vegetarian and her work with the Humane Society of the United States as well as that controversial cover shoot for W magazine where she wore leather.

“I had written the magazine, my publicist had talked to the magazine, and there was not going to be a way for me to do that cover without wearing the clothes they needed modeled, which of course made me uncomfortable because I was clad in all leather. I would never do a fashion campaign selling leather. I would never accept money to model leather.”

Goodwin took a lot of criticism from the vegan community for agreeing to do the shoot, which she says, “really did break my heart.”

“I took solace in Rory Freedman, a new friend a the time, who made me feel a lot better about the decision to have taken the cover over not having taken it as an opportunity to talk about the issues.”

RAFW S/S 2010/11 - Nookie Catwalk

Louise Van De Vorst made a creative scene at Australian Fashion Week on Wednesday when she arrived in a Volcano dress by designers Romance Was Born.

Van De Vorst is a successful model who is branching out and starting her own clothing line.

This vegan, much like her boyfriend, Silverchair’s front man Daniel Johns, is quite ethical in her food and fashion, and won’t be putting any real fur on the catwalk.

“With myself I do use fake fur and it’s really important to do that kind of stuff,” she said.

With the rise in real fur at so many fashion weeks during the past few months, Van De Vorst’s ethics are a refreshing change.

Leona Lewis Demands Precise Tofu, Turns Down Fur Business Cards

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 in Fashion, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Leona Lewis shows off a bit of her pink underwear after having lunch with two male friends in Beverly Hills

Leona Lewis requested that no one eat meat in her presence when she interviewed with In Style UK for the June 2010 cover shoot.

It was also revealed that the singer is very particular about how her tofu is prepared.

“I don’t think I’m demanding!” she said. “I think it’s okay to ask how you want your food cooked. People just dramatise everything.”

No, the singer insists she still has those sweet girl roots and has never even gotten angry, except for a few times, like when someone kept trying to give her a business card to get her a fur.

She is in the process of designing clothing for her vegetarian fashion line, which she says she hasn’t had a lot of time to focus on, but it’s definitely still scheduled to launch one day.
