Emily Deschanel Meat’s Not Green Video

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Videos.

Environmentalists take note: If you eat meat, you’re a hypocrite.

Meat’s not green, says Emily Deschanel in her latest PSA for PETA. The meat industry is responsible for more greenhouse gases than all forms of transportation combined, according to a recent report by the UN on Climate Change.

“There is no such thing as a meat-eating environmentalist. Now-a-days being green is very fashionable — especially in Hollywood,” Emily says. “While I think it is terrific to recycle and drive a hybrid, you can have an even greater impact on the environment by making one simple choice: don’t eat meat.”

“Fight climate change with diet change.”

Foxnews.com has compiled a list of celebrities who have proven to be less than green on some occasions. A couple of vegheads made the hall of shame.

Like Woody Harrelson, for example. The actor who swears by the solar panel had an attachment to some clothing worst than Linus and his blanket. He had his favorite vegan shoes and belt flown from his California home to the Cannes Film Festival in France. Yeah, that’s so eco-friendly. NOT.

Then there’s our man Paul McCartney. If you think it’s fuel inefficient to fly shoes and a belt, think about carrying a car through the friendly skies.

“He even bought a hybrid vehicle to cut down on his personal footprint. But the ex-Beatle made just one minor misstep. He had the car specially flown from Japan, creating more emissions with one flight than the car will ever save in its lifetime. Nice try, Paul.”

But at least these guys have offset their eco-sins with a veg diet. The remaining celebrities on the hall of shame can’t take that credit.

Emily Deschanel, Rory Freedman Share Vegan Earth Day Date Idea

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 in Actresses, Authors, Environment-Eco-Green.

Gretchen Ryan's "Little Pretty" Exhibition Opening

Happy Earth Day! Do you have big plans?

Bones actress Emily Deschanel and Skinny Bitch author Rory Freedman described to Chloe Jo of the Girlie Girl Army their idea of the perfect Earth Day friend date.

It involves trapezes and vegan food. Hopefully, they’d wait awhile after eating the vegan food and getting on the trapeze.

Rory Freedman: First stop: trapeze school on the Santa Monica pier! It’s one version of man-made fun that doesn’t leave any carbon footprint. You swing around in the air confronting your fear of heights and bodily harm. It’s an amazing workout where you get to be outside, enjoy the fresh air, see the ocean, feel young, and get manhandled by hot guys. When we’re done playing Circus of the Stars, we can go stuff our faces at Golden Mean Cafe, the new vegan spot in Santa Monica that’s all the buzz. The food is ridiculously good, there’s an upstairs mediation/reading room, the space is really Zen (the walls are infused with crushed quartz crystal, selenite, mica, gold, and incense), and the owner and head chef couldn’t be sweeter.

Emily Deschanel: Ooh I can’t wait! I’ve been dying to do trapeze school, and I haven’t been to that restaurant yet!! You know we both love vegan food!!! I wonder what the crystals in the walls will do for us.. We’ll probably feel all centered and new-age-y.

In the old days if you were on a budget and looking for animal-free footwear, Payless ShoeSource was your one stop hub. Only every shoe there was made from fibers drenched in toxic chemicals that made your feet turn colors on a hot summer day.

That’s all changed now. Payless launched their Zoe & Zac collection last week and model and green activist Summer Rayne Oakes is the face of sustainable, green footwear.

Every pair in the women and girls collection is under $30.

If that doesn’t get you salivating, here’s some of the green features the shoes have to offer: organic cotton, faux suede and faux leather materials manufactured with reduced heavy metals, recycled rubber and elastic made from recycled plastic bottles, and water based and non-toxic glues.

Plus, any Zoe & Zac shoe purchased donates $1 to the Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion campaign. As in, a billion, beautiful, CO2 reducing trees.

Girlie Girl Chloe Jo Berman And Vegan Pets On Good Morning America

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 in Authors, Environment-Eco-Green.

Gretchen Ryans Little Pretty Exhibition Opening

Wow. Talk about movin’ on up!

Blogger Chloe Jo Berman of Girlie Girl Army is on the fast track to vegan and ethical fame. She recently appeared on Good Morning America to discuss the issue of vegan pets.

Several celebrities, including Alicia Silverstone, Paul McCartney, and Dennis Kucinich have placed their dogs on a vegan diet.

Silverstone even says her doggies fart less because of it.

But is it healthy?

There’s lots of controversy over whether our pets were truly meant to be carnivores, especially cats, who need certain nutrients like taurine, found in meat products.

Chloe said, “There’s no reason why I should take a life for another life. I don’t understand. If I wouldn’t put her on a plate as dinner why should I do it to a cow or a lamb or a chicken.”

“Who are hungry little vegan doggies?” Chloe asks as she feeds them apples, bread, and tofu.

Go watch the video of Chloe and check out her cute vegan doggies who have been vegan for six years.

And congrats to Chloe for the publicity. You go Girlie Girl!

Ed Begley Jr. Gets Legally Green

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green.

Opening Night For Spamalot At The Wynn Las Vegas - Arrivals

No, it’s not a sequel to the popular Reese Witherspoon Legally Blonde movie.

The green law firm Gardere Wynne Sewell invited Ed Begley Jr. to their 100th anniversary celebration.

The firm is involved with many environmentally friendly initiatives from greening its IT department to planting trees around cities.

“Ed was a hit with our attorneys, staff and clients, and it was fun to have a bit of Hollywood at Gardere,” said Stephen Good, the firm’s managing partner.

“His visit opened many minds to the idea of being green change agents. That is part of why we established the Gardere Green initiative in the first place — not only to do our part but to help others join in.”

Ed’s message for the day was that everyone can do their part to help the environment.

And boy, did Gardere Wynne Sewell do their part that day.

Most food was vegetarian, which reportedly even the carnivorous (maybe those are the injury) attorneys didn’t mind. The selection of vegan and gluten-free items were abundant and the food was purchased locally.

The event was also held at an LEED certified building featuring carpet and conference room chairs made from recycled material.

Stella McCartney Is A Force For Nature At NRDC Event

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 in Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

Natural Resources Defense Council 11th Annual Forces For Nature Benefit

Stella McCartney was honored by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recently at its Forces For Nature gala.

The environmental group honored both the vegetarian fashion designer who refuses to use leather in her products, as well as Discovery Channel chief David Zaslav.

Attendees at the event were entertained by comedians and dined on a vegetarian meal.

Stella’s proud papa, Paul McCartney was there with girlfriend Nancy Shevell.

“A love of nature has been instilled in [Stella] as she grew up,” Paul said. “But I don’t want to take any credit. She’s a smart girl. When she came in to the fashion industry, she came in to Gucci, which is leather city. I was really wondering how long it would be before she’d have to cave in to the economic pressures, but she just hung in there.”

Other celebrity attendees included Tom and Kathy Freston, Barry Diller, Diane von Furstenberg, Graydon and Anna Carter, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Ron Perelman, Zhang Ziyi and host Alec Baldwin.

Stella’s fashion line is quite successful, and the fact that more environmentally friendly attire is making its way into women’s closets is a bonus. And that’s just how Stella prefers it.

“I don’t want people to buy my stuff because they know it’s not leather,” she said with a smile. “I just want them to want the boots.”
