Myq Kaplan “Last Comic Standing” Full Of Vegan Laughter (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 in Comedians, Food & Drink, Videos.

Myq Kaplan Stand-Up Comedy from Myq Kaplan on Vimeo.

Myq Kaplan (pronounced “Mike”) is a favorite Last Comic Standing among television bloggers, partially due to his ability to successfully incorporate ripping himself as a meatless man.

The vegan for about 5 years who was vegetarian for about 8 years before that has a hilarious clip from Conan O’Brien where he jokes about the lifestyle. Not all vegetarians are treehuggers and love the environment, for example.

“People assume I’m into other kinds of activism,” Kaplan says. “Oh, you’re vegetarian. You care about the environment…No. I eat the environment.”

Veganism isn’t the only medium from which Kaplan can get roars from the audience. He jokingly offers insight to Prohibition and Women’s Suffrage and why one led to another…and back again. Watch the clip for more.

Bill Maher Ponders Why Canada Behind Others In Seal Hunt Ban

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Comedians, TV Hosts.

Bill Maher

Bill Maher has a guest post at the New York Daily News urging his Canadian friends to make strides towards ending the country’s annual seal hunt.

Ever the sarcastic personality Maher is, he uses examples of how other governments have agreed the hunt is senseless, while Canada falls behind even the…gasp…United States Senate!

“Opposition around the world is growing. Last year, the U.S. Senate – a group of people who usually can’t agree that the sky is blue – unanimously passed a resolution calling for an immediate end to the annual slaughter. But the Canadian government just keeps putting its fingers in its ears and singing “la, la, la” so that it won’t hear anything it doesn’t like. Or, if it does hear, it responds with all the subtlety and sophistication of a fistfight in the men’s room at a monster-truck rally.”

Sarah Silverman can make a joke out of just about anything. But the state of school lunches today is no laughing matter and the comedian showed her serious side when she wrote to Congress, requesting it pass the Healthy School Meals Act. Silverman joins several celebrities who have voiced their support for the bill that would make vegetarian options more readily available in schools nationwide.

“All kids—vegetarian or not—should have healthy options. I think we forget the simple fact that what we put in our bodies directly effects our bodies. Many kids aren’t able to bring lunches from home—they have to eat what’s in the lunch line. Without healthful options in the cafeteria, we’re doing our children and the future of our country a great disservice.”

Sarah Silverman "The Bedwetter"

PETA is kicking off the annual World’s Sexiest Vegetarian contest and funny former bedwetter Sarah Silverman has some stiff competition, competing against the likes of women like Alicia Silverstone, Lea Michele and Erykah Badu.

Who doesn’t love a woman who can throw humor into a poignant story that involved slaughtering animals, which ultimately caused her to give them up?

From her book, The Bedwetter, Silverman writes on the experience of watching a turkey being killed on a neighbor’s farm:

“Without realizing it, I had sentenced that turkey to death, and while maybe this sort of thing gave fat British monarchs a rush, to me it was horrifying.”

An Evening with 'Parks and Recreation'

Aziz Ansari, star of the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation will be hosting this year’s MTV Movie Awards. From an interview with the New York Times, it sounds as if Ansari might be a vegan.

“Mr. Ansari made no apologies to the crowd at the theater, where the $5 tickets were cheaper and the jokes more meandering than they would be at those future gigs. As he had said that afternoon over lunch at a vegan restaurant in the Silver Lake neighborhood, “I even tell the audience, ‘You’re getting an inferior version of the joke so, I can work on it myself.”

Here’s a video from the Funny or Die series with Sarah Silverman, P. Diddy and other celebrities discussing Aziz’s life and the “struggles” he’s had to endure before rising to stardom to host the MTV Movie Awards.
