A recent Harris poll found that although most Americans are aware of what it takes to eat better, they aren’t interested in doing it. If the Americans polled are anything like ABC viewers, the results are right on target. ABC has cancelled Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution series for low ratings.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 2nd, 2011 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Nutrition-Health-Fitness, Research + Science.

You knew the cream filled double burger wrapped in bacon between two glazed donuts and deep-fried twice was going to catch up with her.

A story featured in the May 10 edition of the National Enquierer claims Southern Queen Paula Deen was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago. What’s worst, it hints Deen wants to keep this a secret, fearing revealing she developed a condition linked very closely to poor diet may make her look bad. Because it’s good for the brand to continue killing other people.

“Before I became a vegetarian I was a huge hamburger fan. It’s not quite the national food of Canada (that would be beer, or maybe poutine, but probably beer) but hamburgers are for everyone, even us. Then, after I gave up meat, I became a huge veggie burger fan and that’s when I had my revelation: it wasn’t the meat that mattered to me. From where I was eating, the hamburger was simply a delivery device for condiments and lettuce and onions and cheese and tomatoes and bread. Those wan soy patties fell into the background and all those condiments, that turned out to be my true love, rushed to the fore.”

Amanda Cohen, founder and owner of Dirt Candy, a vegetable restaurant in New York City. This week has been burger week at Eater, and Cohen’s post for the Veggie Burger Power Hour wraps up the work week.

Top Chef Masters had a healthy twist for their most recent challenge. Three meals had to be prepared for “The Biggest Loser” elimination round, where a day’s worth of entrees had to equal less than 1500 calories.

No problem for a vegetarian chef like Suvir Saran, who uses low-fat sources of protein like beans and lentils in his dishes and has refused to bend during the season, cooking plant-based meals for every challenge.

Jamie Oliver appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live with the superintendent from the Los Angeles Unified School District, John Deasy. The two made the announcement that starting next fall, flavored milks like chocolate and strawberry will no longer be served at schools because of their sugar content.

“There’s more sugar per ounce in flavored milk than there is in a can of soda,” Oliver said. “If you think about a little 4-year old to an 18-year old [drinking this] sometimes twice a day–just flavored milk–in their time at school and then you’re worried about diabetes?”

There is a slight catch to the deal though. If the school system can find flavored milks without added sugar, it may reintroduce them back into the cafeterias. And unfortunately, there is still not enough talk about adding a non-dairy beverage to school menus like rice, almond or soy.

Oliver and Deasy can be viewed below.

Yotam Ottolenghi Apologizes For Fishy Vegetarian Comment

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 in Celebrity Tweets, Chefs, Food & Drink.

Yotam Ottolenghi told the New York Times, “Vegetarians in general don’t like me.”

Well, what’s not to like about the 40-something chef who’s recently released a cookbook dedicated entirely to vegetables and wrote a column for The Guardian titled, “The New Vegetarian” for four years?

Oh, yeah. He gave everybody permission to call themselves “vegetarian” when he said there were no boundaries anymore.

Since that comment generated a lot of bad publicity from the veg community, including the UK Vegetarian Society, he’s backed down. But he still doesn’t understand what he did wrong.
