Weekly Charting of Business Activities on Whiteboard

Time magazine is featuring a short article on the practice of flexitarians, or people who eat vegetarian sometimes, but not completely.

Green lifestyle website Treehugger‘s founder Graham Hill and his “Weekday Vegetarian” concept is discussed, as well as praise for the movement by people involved with animal rights like Animal Liberation author Peter Singer and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal’s president, Ingrid Newkirk.

“Absolute purists should be living in a cave,” says Newkirk. “Anybody who witnesses the suffering of animals and has a glimmer of hope of reducing that suffering can’t take the position that it’s all or nothing. We have to be pragmatic. Screw the principle.”

“The surge is due to a sense of a plateau,” Singer said. “You’ve already reached out to the base of strict vegetarians, and it’s hard to get beyond those numbers. People should go further, but it’s progress in the right direction.”

Renee Oldstead

Renee Olstead and her dog Ella Fitzgerald sat down with Peta2 and discussed vegetarianism, dog fighting and dissecting animals.

Olstead got motivated to go vegetarian on the set of a sitcom where a character’s lines reminded her of what she was actually eating when she sat down for a burger.

“I was on a sitcom when I was about 12. And they had this one line where one of the characters was vegetarian and she said, ‘No thanks, I don’t eat anything with a face.’ And I just turned white. From that moment I suddenly realized that what I was eating was alive and had a mother and breathed; and it suddenly became so appalling.”

Al Manzo Caroline Manzo

Caroline Manzo of the Real Housewives of New Jersey recently looked in her backyard to discover a black bear relieving himself.

Her son, Joey, sent out a Tweet expressing his irritation with the trespasser, “Hellloooo bear in front yard” and “For those of u who ask, a bear doesn’t poop in the woods…it prefers my front yard.” However, Joey didn’t stop at that as Caroline told CNN a few nights ago her son was begging her husband to shoot it.

Her husband’s response, according to Caroline, was, “I’m not going to shoot it. It’s a beautiful animal. It’s just hungry.”

Well, technically it was probably full if it had to get rid of something, but…Mr. Manzo is the man of the month!

He realizes what groups like the Humane Society and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife are trying to get across to the public. Bears and humans can get along.

Michelle Rodriguez

Avatar and Lost actress Michelle Rodriguez will be joining Sea Shepherd on an anti-whaling voyage in the future. Rodriguez made the announcement at the organization’s “Sea No Evil” fundraiser.

“I’m going to go on the next voyage,” she said. “So you guys are actually helping to support the next team to go out to Antarctica and bust their asses on that ship, trying to save some whales. So, I’m going to be one of those people on board.”

The actual length of time she’ll spend on the voyage is unknown, and as Ecorazzi points out, Daryl Hannah‘s trip was reduced significantly because the actress had a conflict. According to Rodriguez’s Internet Movie Database profile, she’s known for her “tough girl” roles in films. Her stint with Sea Shepherd may be her biggest kick butt part ever.

Martha Stewart "Dog Fancy"

Martha Stewart "Dog Fancy"

Yes, you read right. Today’s Meatless Monday recipe was designed to be enjoyed by those with four legs. Since Martha Stewart will be the first human featured on the October 2010 cover of Dog Fancy, which includes a special section about dog adoption, we thought we’d share a pet food recipe for Martha Stewart’s Blueberry Dog Biscuits that doesn’t involve killing another animal.

Since there’s only one egg, these vegetarian biscuits can easily be made vegan. Plus, the goodness of organic blueberry, quinoa flour, oat flour and flax meal might make you tempted to reward yourself with a “treat.”

These were shared from the associate food producer from The Martha Stewart Show, which she received from her mother, who bakes them for the family’s dogs.
