Vegetarian Star

Vegan desserts are a weakness for anyone. From Uncle Eddie’s cookies to So Delicious Ice Cream to Amy’s new vegan cakes, you could easily rack up the grocery bill is sugar coated goodies and forget all the other “essentials” you came for.

Alicia Silverstone apparently is just as mortal as the rest of us and is a big fan of “Snickrz,” a cake made with chocolate, peanut butter, caramel and nuts.

We know this because raw foods chef Stephen Hauptfuhr has told all to the Los Angeles Times blog. Hauptfuhr opened a raw vegan foods catering company, Mooi, after hosting dozens of dinner parties at  his home and realizing that he could charge his friends, but he could make even more money charging others (haha, uh, we added that last revelation).

Some items on his catering menu include beet fettuccine with cilantro pesto and chocolate chili tacos with marinated greens

Oh, yeah, let’s not forget about the desserts, which are sold at the Elf cafe in LA (makes us think the Keebler elves went vegan and quit to work for someone else).

Soon Hauptfuhr will be opening his own cafe.

The veg room at Fox’s House is getting roomier now that Kal Penn (Dr. Kutner)has left for the White House. But Lisa Edelstein and Olivia Wilde are still holding down the fort, along with their male vegetarian counterpart, Omar Epps. Lisa Edelstein frequently makes veg dishes for her guests and claims they never miss the meat. Wilde will be eating more than one veggie burger, given the fact she can eat 33 pancakes in 20 minutes. So between the two House actresses, who would you rather do?

Alicia Silverstone has opened up about her early vegetarian days.

According to Starpulse.com, the actress tried being veg at age eight, but cheated from time to time until she got a little older and was able to think about where her food was coming from. After she realized meat came from animals just like the dogs she helped rescue, the vegan deal was signed.

“I started thinking, ‘Why am I saving one animal and still eating steak? How can I love these creatures so much… and keep eating meat?’ Ultimately I thought that if I wasn’t ready to eat a dog, I shouldn’t be eating meat at all.”

Why do you think we’ve become so accepting of eating some animals and not others? Is it the cute factor? Or a cultural thing?

W Magazine (which is on a roll doing some fantastic regular vegan features, by the way) recently interviewed actress Ginnifer Goodwin, where they discovered the newlywed vegan used to have some Big Love for cheeseburgers.

“People keep saying to me, ‘Ginny, you were such a cheeseburger person; that was, like, your thing,'” Ginnifer told W.

“I’m so anti body-image issues. It was always part of my identity that I would show off by eating everything. But I’ve made a decision that I could not continue to support these [meat] industries.”

But that doesn’t mean Ginnifer can’t enjoy a big meal like in her pre-vegan days.

While doing the interview, Ginnifer was scarfing down spaghetti and “wheat” balls at a vegan eatery in Greenwich village.

And we already know she doesn’t go without her taco fix for long. Or her vegan pancakes, which may have her doing an Olivia Wilde eating contest on somebody. 

We still know you’re the Queen of Eating, Ginnifer. Now you wear a healthier, less cruel crown.

Although not as active in the film industry as her siblings, Liberty Lord Phoenix (shown on left), sister of Joaquin Phoenix, has film credits from the 80s, including Kate’s Secret and Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.

Not that she would have time for that anyway, as this lady has just celebrated the second anniversary of her business, Indigo Green Store in Gainesville, Florida. Her store specializes in environmentally friendly and non-toxic building and home supplies and gifts.

Indigo’s shelves are stocked with eco-friendly products from natural based cleaners to bamboo flooring

Liberty credits her parents for her success and awareness of what it means to be a responsible citizen of the planet.

“Both of my parents raised me vegan and have taught me to love and respect the Earth through not eating animals, recycling, organic gardening, conserving resources and doing all I can on a daily basis to help reduce my impact,” she said.

Good to know she’s appreciative of mom and pop’s teachings now, but wonder if she rebelled with a cheese pizza in her youth like Joaquin did?

Ah, the list of annual chores to complete. Doctor check-ups, taxes, and voting for the sexiest vegetarian celebrity.

It’s that time again where Hollywood’s meatless get turned into pieces of meat and compete in PETA’s annual Sexiest Vegetarian contest.

As always, there’s both a male and female category and Mr. I Cook Meals At Home Milo Ventimiglia is vying for your votes, competing against people like Tobey Maguire, Russell Simmons, and Bryan Adams.

Hopefully, the ladies won’t get into too many catfights, as some of the veg sex kittens in the ring are Alanis Morissette, Carrie Underwood, and Chelsea Clinton.

Cloris Leachman recently made an appearance at the Escondido Public Library in California to promote and sign her new book, Cloris: My Autobiography.

It’s known that the octogenarian has been a vegetarian for decades and Cloris revealed what prompted her to try the diet.

She was suffering from several medical problems that doctors couldn’t solve, including hay fever, asthma and insomnia. She started a juice fast, which cured her ailments, and the rest is veggie history.

The actress and Dancing With The Stars contestant is a strong advocate of the diet, posed for PETA for the Let Vegetarianism Grow On You campaign, and even chided a fan during her book signing for drinking soda pop.

“Quit, why don’t you?” Cloris admonished. “It will save your life. Start having juice.”
