Gene Baur

Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, one of the country’s largest organizations for abused, neglected and rescued farmed animals, sat down with the hosts of KTLA’s Sunday Edition to answer a few basic questions about the vegan lifestyle.

Baur busts many common stereotypes about veganism.

It’s not the new anorexia and people who follow the diet are quite healthy. It’s not always expensive, doesn’t require a membership to the organic co-op and you may even be able to find a few staples at the local dollar store. An even if you end up paying slightly more, it may save money in the future. Baur cites a statistic that a vegan diet could save us all 70% on our health care costs.

A vegetarian eats vegetation. … Even though fish comes out of the ocean, it’s not a vegetable. If you’re a vegetarian you only eat things that are vegetation or made from vegetation. Off the tree, out of the ground or out of a pod.”

John Salley, on his current more truthful vegetarian days.

So I decided that I wanted to see if I could live to be a grandfather, so I just went all the way. Now, I try to eat some salmon once a week, but I don’t miss any of that. Getting rid of the dairy was great, getting rid of the meat was–I just don’t miss it.”

Bill Clinton, who although may miss the posh lifestyle of his White House years, doesn’t miss his old diet.
