Oscars 2010 - RED CARPET

PETA is rewarding Steve Jobs for Apple’s decision to reject an app that let players club seals, the iSealclub application.

The Apple CEO should be receiving his vegan chocolate seals any day now.

Senior vice president of PETA, Dan Matthews, included a letter to Jobs, along with his chocolate goodies, thanking him, reminding him he shares company with several political leaders around the world that think the annual seal hunt is inappropriate.

From Techcrunch:

“On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters worldwide, thank you for rejecting the proposed iSealClub iPhone application, which has drawn a great deal of attention to Canada’s annual baby-seal slaughter. You are in good company. Global leaders as diverse as Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and the Dalai Lama have taken a stand against the slaughter, and the European Union recently voted to ban seal fur.”

“As a token of our appreciation, we will be sending you some vegan-chocolate seals.”

Feminist Equates Eating Meat With Misogyny At Harvard Speech

Carol J. Adams "The Sexual Politics of Meat"

Carol J. Adams "The Sexual Politics of Meat"

Carol J. Adams, author of the book, The Sexual Politics of Meat, spoke on the campus of Harvard University, urging students to go vegetarian, comparing eating meat to misogyny.

The event was sponsored by the Harvard College Vegetarian Society.

Adams said that meat eating is often equated with masculinity and places that celebrate meals of meat also tend to objectify women, such as Hooter’s.

Some criticized Adams for not bringing enough statistics into her speech, such as the effects of meat on human health and the environment.

Adams responded by saying both meat eating and debasing women should be looked at as “experiences” rather than numbers.

“I don’t give a damn about statistics,” Adams said. “I feel that using statistics participates in a rationalized way of thinking about the problem that undercuts my perspective.”

The Harvard Crimson reports most of her aggressive questioners were male.

They probably had just come from their dinner of burgers from the student union.

“Good Day New York” Anchor Suggests Vulgar Name For Soy Milk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Offbeat, TV Hosts, Videos.

If you’ve ever been ribbed about why soy milk is called milk because it doesn’t come from a cow, here’s another name, albeit vulgar, you can start calling it.

The anchors of Good Day New York were having this discussion because the National Milk Producer’s Federation thinks only products that come from lactating animals should be categorized as milk.

Co-anchor Rosanna Scott suggested soy milk be called “Soy jizzum,” getting both a giggle and embarrassed look from both of her co-workers.

But soy milk does not come from male reproductive organs either.

Apple Rejects iSealClub Seal Hunt Application

Canada Raises Quota For Controversial Seal Hunt

Apple has rejected the iSealClub application, a game that lets players club seals for points, because it was deemed to have objectionable content, according to The Telegram.

Matt Smyth, the app’s designer, can’t understand the decision, citing there’s no blood in his game and there are other apps that are violent, such as “Grand Theft Auto.”

Smyth said, “They allow other apps, like ‘Trophy Hunt’ for bear and deer and whatnot. I don’t see the difference between killing a seal … and killing a deer. But Apple decides to impose their morals, that they don’t agree with the hunt.”

Could it have anything to do with the values of  Steve Jobs?

The CEO of Apple is a vegetarian who was rumored to have broke off Disney’s ties with McDonald’s years ago shortly after he took over Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs had vocally questioned fast food chains, given their consequences on health.

The Buddhist may have once again taken a stand, using his beliefs about animals to keep material depicting the Canadian Seal Hunt as a game from being available through Apple.

A phone call to Apple from The Telegram was not returned.

Premiere Of Summit Entertainment's Furry Vengeance - After Party

Brendan Fraser stars in the film Furry Vengeance, about a group of animals in the woods protesting a local real estate developer building on their land.

Despite the humorous storyline, the show obviously has a serious environmental theme to it, which Brendan agrees needs to be taught to children.

He shared his thoughts on this, plus how he gets his kids to eat vegetables with Parade Magazine.

“We all know that we should reuse, recycle, repair, respect, and return to the way we used to do things,” Fraser said. “But I think it’s especially important to remind kids of that. They have great fun when they see this movie, but they also get the point about preserving nature. I was at a screening where some of them were actually quite indignant about the forest and all the creatures great and small being threatened for a development project. They’re rooting for the furry guys all the way through it.”

When it comes to getting his children to eat their greens, all he has to do is threaten them with film takes of dad.

“I had the gag reel from the film with every take of me being humiliated and smashed and trashed. So I’d use it as a reward to get my kids to eat their vegetables. I’d be like, ‘Eat your broccoli and you can watch dad fall down again.'”

Patrick Stump On Whale Hunting And Our Sense Of Urgency (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Videos.

Patrick Stump was interviewed by Treehugger at The Climate Rally where he gave his thoughts on the importance of Earth Day.

Stump explained that taking steps to protect the environment is often like other tasks people do in the sense that they wait until it’s an urgent matter instead of planning ahead for the worst.

“I almost feel like there’s going to take there being like 10 whales left before someone to go, ‘Oh, shit, we should stop killing whales’,” he said.

Celebs Attend Good HouseKeeping Shine On Event

A couple of months ago, Dr. Oz put three Chicago firefighters on a vegan diet.

Mauricio “Mo” Tirado, Egnechles “Iggy” Brown and Doug Crowley have all since lost 20-30 pounds each, according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Crowley was able to stop taking cholesterol medication, Brown is excited he can see his abs again and oatmeal is starting to grow on Tirado.

The men plan to stick to their diets as much as possible and say that if they do ever consume meat, it will be in very small amounts.

Dr. Oz enlisted the help of The Engine 2 Diet author Rip Esselstyn, a Texas firefighter who got his team into better shape by convincing them to eat vegan at the firehouse.

“Firehouses are the dumping ground of all of America’s leftovers — you couldn’t create a better atmosphere for unhealthy eating,” Esselstyn said. “It’s such a masculine culture — they think you need to eat dairy, eggs and meat and if you don’t you’re a little sissy girl.”
