Stephen Colbert Pokes Fun Of PETA’s Sea Kittens Campaign

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, January 18th, 2009 in Actors, Comedians, Not So Vegetarian, TV Hosts, Videos.

Stephen Colbert thought it would be fun to satirized PETA’s Save The Sea Kittens Campaign, and gave a “Tip of the Hat” piece of advice to the animal rights group.

“Save The Sea Kittens” is designed to get people to stop eating seafood by making fish seem as cute, adorable, and intelligent as cats.

Colbert admits that normally he’s not a fan of PETA because if “scientists can’t squirt shampoo into a rabbit’s eyes, then how would I know what shampoo to squirt into my rabbit’s eyes,” he sarcastically said.

Stephen decides to rename other animals with vegetarian names so that they’ll seem more acceptable to eat, including calling cats “landfish,” cows “field potatoes,” and owls “sky nachos.”

The “Tip of the Hat” starts after a minute and a half into the video.

Safe to say he’s not buying into the campaign. Bet Jeremy Piven is, though.

Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi Aimed For Vegan On First Date

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, January 18th, 2009 in Actresses, Couples, TV Hosts.

35th Annual People's Choice Awards - Audience

It’s been known for a few months now that Ellen DeGeneres has become vegan, but now her wife, Portia de Rossi, is opening up about how turning vegan has changed her life as well.

Neither of them were vegan when they met, but according to Portia, the couple made it a goal to cross animals off their lists after their very first date, according to Contact Music.

“When Ellen and I first got together I was wearing fur and Ellen was wearing very expensive Italian calfskin leather. She was giving me a hard time about wearing the fur and I said, ‘Why is a fox any more important than a cow?’

“We took that idea and went all the way with it. We are doing what we can.”

Last year, the menu at the couple’s wedding reception was completely vegan.

Nothing like a good woman to make a person change their ways. In this case, both members of the happy couple got a nudge from one.

Linda McCartney Food Range May Not Escape Economic Wrath

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

Paul And Linda McCartney

There’s nothing sadder than being ahead of the game at halftime only to slide towards defeat during the last quarter.

The Linda McCartney food range created by Paul McCartney’s late wife was doing quite well weeks ago, but it appears that more than love is needed to prevent cutbacks from the staff.

The Fakenham Times reports:

“And there was another blow as vegetarian food producer Linda McCartney announced 17 jobs could be lost in manufacturing cutbacks. The news comes just six weeks after company bosses said soaring sales of the relaunched brand would give security for the 180-strong workforce on Holt Road.”

The Linda McCartney factory parent company, Hain Frozen Foods, had to cut back on production hours as well, even though there was a rise in the sale of its meat-free products.

Hoping for the best for the workers and their families as the companies try to weather the economic storm.

Emily Deschanel Blessed And Cursed In Future “Bones” Episode

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Actresses.

14th Annual Diversity Awards Gala - Portraits

Emily Deschanel has something to look forward to on her Fox series “Bones.”

A vegan character, much like herself, will be introduced soon.

However, this happiness is somewhat dampened by a future episode involving a zoo, something she is against.

“I’m particularly disappointed that there’s going to be an elephant,” she said.

The particular episode involves someone being eaten by a tiger.

It’s safe to say that tiger isn’t the vegan character.

Celebrity Big Brother contestants

Many of us are pinching pennies in the recession and the contestants of Celebrity Big Brother 6  are no exception.

The group, which includes notables like La Toya Jackson and Verne Troyer, were recently faced with buying groceries on a reduced budget and were arguing over what foods should be put on the shopping list.

Ulrika Jonsson suggested talking La Toya into compromising and eating some tuna and salmon because it’s cheaper.

Troyer protests that La Toya isn’t trying to be difficult in her eating choices, but that she’s vegetarian and they shouldn’t force her to eat meat.

Apparently, she’s been doing it anyway.

Jonsson later told other house mates that “Verne was so quick to stand up for La Toya and make the point that she is a vegetarian, has a strict diet and needs her salmon,” she said.

“But, well, vegetarians aren’t supposed to eat fish in the first place, and La Toya even ate turkey mince yesterday.”

You’d think that La Toya could have the rules bent and bring in her own food in order to stick with her diet.

But as we learned with the Amazing Race, Reality TV ain’t always pretty to those who aren’t omnivores.

Davey Havok One Ups Hunter Burgan With “Got Pus?” T-Shirt

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Fashion, Male Singers.

KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas - Day 1

We’re starting to believe we’ve got Alicia Silverstone psychic powers.

A few days ago, we informed you that AFI’s Hunter Burgan was crowned Vegan Ambassador for MacBeth shoes and that Davey Havok would soon make a grand publicity announcement to ensure his name remained king in vegan fashion.

Sure enough, Davey’s got a new T-Shirt in his Zu Boutique Clothing line to demonstrate what dairy milk contains-pus.

Yes, that’s gross, but is there really a prettier way of putting it?

The “Got Pus?” shirts, mocking the famous “Got Milk” slogan, are promised to be 100% somatic cell count free. Somatic cell count is a quality indicator of milk that increases in response to bacteria, such as staph, which then causes mastitis, a condition where pus filled abscesses form around the nipple.

Yes, we know. Got vomit bag yet?

Like other Davey fashions, this shirt is limited edition, and once all 100 of them run out, they’re gone for good.

Joanna Lumley Gets Crated Like A Pig On Jamie Oliver Show

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

British Academy Television Awards 2008 - Arrivals

The UK show Jamie Saves Our Bacon featuring celebrity chef Jamie Oliver may have a man behind the wheel, but there’s a female giving some directions as well.

Actress Joanna Lumley (The New Avengers, Sapphire and Steel), both vegetarian and animal lover, will be demonstrating what pigs who are crated endure by joining students who will live in the farrowing crates for 24 hours.

Farrowing crates are the narrow cages pigs are kept in while giving birth and feeding their litters.

“The conditions they face are both physically and psychologically harrowing,” the actress told the Times Online.

The program is meant to educate on how pigs are treated on farms and to let consumers know where their food is coming from. While some have argued that it doesn’t solve the problem of animal abuse because it’s not advocating vegetarianism, it’s at least trying to incite the creation of more humane standards for the animals, which is a step forward.

“Jamie Saves Our Bacon” will be showing on UK Channel 4.

Omar Epps In Same Veg House As Lisa Edelstein

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Actors.

Yet another celebrity hiding behind his tempeh, Omar Epps, the actor who plays Dr. Eric Foreman on “House” follows a vegetarian diet.

How is it we are just now finding out about this? Must be because he hasn’t gotten naked for PETA yet.

But how incredible it is to know both he and fellow “House” cast mate Lisa Edelstein both keep their houses meat-free.

Treehugger.com has compiled a gallery of Vegetarian Men We Love: Macho Men Who Don’t Eat Meat, where you’ll find Omar, as well as other photos of deliciously meatless men such as Jared Leto, and fun facts like Forest Whitaker remaining vegetarian while putting on 50 pounds to play dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Because there’s still a stereotype of vegetarianism and veganism being a “girlie” thing, it’s good to know the boys are getting proper respect.
