Meatless Mouthful: Mac Danzig’s Moment With A Pig

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 9th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Meatless Mouthful.

“I remember being 13 and seeing a truck on the interstate filled with pigs all headed to the slaughterhouse. One of them made eye contact with me for a while. It was one of the saddest moments I can remember. There was so much intelligence and spirit in him, and here he was, being sent to an awful death.”
—-Ultimate Fighter Mac Danzig, in an statement about his early experiences in life that led to him to become vegan. Danzig won Most Animal Friendly Athlete at the peta2.org Libby awards.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Defends Sarah Palin On The View

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 6th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts, Videos.

Ashley Judd came to the defense of the wolves Sarah Palin advocated killing, now a celebrity is coming to Palin’s defense.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck of  The View is upset because she feels celebrities stand up for animal rights more than they do humans. She recently spoke about  Judd collaborating with the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund to expose Sarah Palin’s environmental track record.

“The problem that I have here is like a lot of these vocal celebrities, in a way, get very loud about these animal killings. Like is she loud as..she said, ‘How many wolves have been killed? 900 this year.’ Is she as loud about the 260,000 kids killed in abortions?”

Her comment results in Joyce Behar asking her to stick to talking about wolves as the discussion heats up.

The stereotype among many non animal rights activists is that the activists have more regard for animals than people. Do you think if animal rights activists voiced their support for human rights more often (while continuing to vouch for animals), they’d get a better reputation?

Chime in and let us know your thought!

Alexis Stewart Kicks Off Farm Forward Launch Party With Vegan Cookies

Petas Fashion Week Bash At Stella McCartney

Alexis Stewart, the vegetarian daughter of Martha Stewart and co-host of Whatever Radio, has been active in animal rights and vegetarianism before. Now she’s at it again, hosting the Farm Forward Launch party in her own home and feeding guest with vegan treats.

Farm Forward is an organization that wishes to move away from the practice of factory farming and toward smaller family owned farms that care for the animals better, and encourages more sustainable agricultural practices.

The launch party attendees  included Alexis and her mother Martha, as well as novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, who is a Farm Forward Board Member. Foer joked that he has tried to go vegetarian several times and coining an old phrase Mark Twain used about smoking, he said “it’s easy to go vegetarian, I’ve done it dozens of times.”

Although members of it’s Executive staff are vegan, Farm Forward is aiming to create better lives for the animals that will be eventually slaughtered, according to Aaron Gross, one executive staff member.

Vegan hors d’oeuvres were served and Alexis baked her very own vegan cookies.

You can view clips from the Farm Forward Launch party as well as learn more about Farm Forward.

35th Annual People's Choice Awards - Backstage

“We eat really clean. I stopped eating meat first, and when I stopped eating dairy – which was hard, because I loved cheese! – I lost the most weight. I eat a lot of vegetables. I saw the cages [of animals] in a disturbing documentary Earthlings, and could no longer participate. We love animals.”

Ira Glass: This American’s Life Doesn’t Include Chicken

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 6th, 2009 in Radio Hosts, TV Hosts, Videos.

WNYC Radio Producers Circle & Ira Glass Host

Ira Glass is the producer and host of NPR’s This American Life, who started playing poker after doing a story on professional poker players. That story wasn’t the only one that prompted Glass to make changes in his life.

A woman who ran a poultry advocacy group and rescued chickens from poultry trucks was upset because every year around Thanksgiving and Christmas (during higher consumptions of chicken), This American Life would feature a show about chickens called “The Poultry Slam,” a spin off of a poetry slam.

He featured a story on her and after visiting the United Poultry Concerns Chicken Sanctuary on the Eastern Shore, he started eating less and less chicken, eventually stopping altogether and becoming vegetarian.

Much like cartoonist Dan Piraro discovered after his visit to a Farm Sanctuary, Ira says he surprisingly found chickens with different personalities, such as the “shy” ones and the “outgoing” ones.

Here’s a video of Glass on the David Letterman Show discussing his visit, both humorously and seriously describing the events that led up to his vegetarianism.

When Glass asks Dave if he’s met any chickens, Dave sarcastically answers “not more than usually one sauteed breast at a time.”

Ginnifer Goodwin Is Just That Into Being Vegan: Big Love To Her!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 6th, 2009 in Actresses.

He's Just Not That Into You Los Angeles Premiere

We told you earlier that Ginnifer Goodwin was spotted picking up a take-out at Vegan Glory restaurant. Now it is confirmed, and unless you watched Conan O’Brien last night, this could be one of the first places you heard it from.

Ginnifer Goodwin is vegan!

The actress who’s new movie, He’s Just Not That Into You, premiers today, appeared on Conan O’Brien last night where she expressed how much she loved being a vegan.

“It’s amazing,” she said of her recent decision. “I don’t need drugs. There’s a party in my body. Every thing’s working appropriately.” She also suggests that if Conan were vegan, they could have parties in their bodies together.

Funny, as Conan brought it up, he said he wanted to touch an area of her personal life that was less sexy (than her role in HBO’s Big Love). Has he watched the Veggie Love video yet?

He jokingly gives her grief when she mentions different types of vegan cheese, asking her if they could make cheese out of anything, including microphones.

You can watch the episode of Conan and Goodwin, with Ginnifer’s appearance starting around minute 28.

Paul McCartney: Renaissance Man Who Cooks A Mean Veg Lasagna

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Paul McCartney in the West Village

Nancy Shevell will have it made if she finally ties the knot with ex Beatles Sir Paul McCartney. A man who can cook makes the best husband, hands down.

McCartney was being interviewed by Entertainment Weekly when it was mentioned he’s such as well rounded man-musician who plays most of the instruments on his albums, poet, children’s book author, and artist who drew the artwork for his album.

“Such a renaissance man,” EW suggested. “Can you bake too?”

“Well, I did make a vegetarian lasagna recently, one Linda used to make. I found it in a book in the kitchen and I thought, can I really do this? But I did and it was quite delicious”

Paul has had many years of practice cooking vegetarian since he and late wife Linda’s Christmas without turkey, where they crafted a macaroni and cheese “turkey” in place of the real thing.

Britney Spears Won’t Try To Front With Live Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Singers, Videos.

Britney Spears Performs On ABC's

While we’re a little confused as to why Britney would make the circus a theme for her tour, we’re at least glad she’s not using live animals on stage.

Spears caught heat from groups like the Humane Society of The United States not long ago when she used live animals in her music video “Circus.”

If you watch the video below, you’ll see lions and elephants surrounding people. (Again, why the heck bring lions in the studio? Unless, with the economy and all, you’re looking to reduce your staff.)

But thankfully, lions, tigers, or bears won’t be coming to a venue near you along with Britney. In a statement released by Britney’s people:

“We wanted the stage to resemble the design of a three-ring circus where multiple acts can take place simultaneously. While avoiding such traditional circus elements as live animals, we’ve created something innovative and exciting using contortionists, dancers, lighting, fire and other special effects. In the end, we just want fans to experience a unique and thrilling concert with Britney.”

Good job, Britney. Everyone knows you’re still so much a sex kitten, there’s no room for other animals on the stage.
