Oprah Winfrey “Heavenly Christmas Pudding” Recipe

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 11th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Recipes, TV Hosts.

UPI POY 2009 - Entertainment.

Oprah Winfrey tried the vegan life before as part of what she called her “inner makeover.”

If you’re interested in improving your inner beauty without sacrificing the taste of good food, you’ll be happy to hear the O has posted a recipe on her website, Heavenly Christmas Pudding, that has some deliciously vegan features to it.

The pudding calls for non dairy milk, such as hemp, rice or soy and the recipe creator suggests vegetable oils versus butter.

“I used coconut oil in place of the animal fat that’s traditionally used, but you could use ghee, butter or a vegan “butter” like Earth Balance instead,” says Aine McAteer.

Great idea, considering the saturated fat you find in regular butter.

Grab the recipe containing rich fruits like apricots, cranberries and prunes at oprah.com.

Persia White “Earthlings”–How It All Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Discovery Channel's Animal Planet Show "Whale Wars" Event

Persia White co-produced the Joaquin Phoenix narrated Earthlings, a film about the use of animals by humans for food, fashion and entertainment.

Seems natural for a vegetarian gal like Persia to have such passion for a project, and Persia explained to Beauty Interviews how she joined forces with director Shaun Monson and Phoenix help create an award winning film.

“I met Shaun Monson the director and he was trying to put together Earthlings as project of passion. I was already involved in animal welfare. Getting involved in Earthlings was pretty intense because there were still a lot of things I didn’t know. To raise compassion and awareness is so necessary. The documentary is not just about animals it’s about how we treat each other as well. How we have empathy for the weak and we don’t abuse it. It exposes the truth. It is a very difficult film to get into mainstream because there are so many corporations that will hurt if their secrets revealed.”

“It was very difficult. Joaquin Phoenix is a wonderful actor, and like myself, a vegan. However, Joaquin is booked and away so much. He’s schedule was intense. But we did it. The music was donated by Moby.”

Thank goodness Moby‘s music was used versus Phoenix’s rap tracks.

Stella McCartney Switches On Store Christmas Lights

Some things just sound too good to be true.

Like the rumor that Stella McCartney and Morrissey, two longtime vegetarians, are teaming up to design a leather-free shoe.

Negative.

Says official Stella McCartney Fan Page on Facebook:

“Stella is a fan of Morrissey but those rumors of a collaboration for a shoe line are simply not true.”

There’s really no other way to put it but as another fan did:

“bummer XX”

“Skinny Bitch” Rory Freedman Hates Writing, Loves Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 11th, 2009 in Authors.

NSF & GQ Magazine's Stop Puppy Mills Humane Society Benefit

Who would have thought that Skinny Bitch co-author Rory Freedman isn’t a big fan of writing.

“I hate writing,” Rory said. “There are a million other things I’d rather be doing. I write because I have to.”

With bestselling books under her belt like Skinny Bitch, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch and not to mention Skinny Bastard, Rory sure does a good job at something she’s not crazy about.

But Rory revealed that her motivation for never putting down the pen is the same for pushing away the meat and dairy.

“My unwavering dedication to vegetarianism was solely because of the animals—I could not and would not call myself an “animal lover” while contributing to their torture and slaughter.”

“Because if I feel so strongly about what is happening to animals, and I don’t do anything to help them, who will?”

What’s your motivation for going vegetarian?

“Dirt Candy” Amanda Cohen On Bad Vegetarian Reputation

Amanda Cohen of Dirt Candy

Amanda Cohen of Dirt Candy

Moby‘s prodigy from Teany has been named 2009 Chef of the Year by Metromix.

Although they love Amanda Cohen, Metromix isn’t too keen on the vegetarian food she cooks at her restaurant, Dirt Candy.

Just take a look at these two questions they fired at Amanda during an interview.

Does vegetarian food get a bad rap?
It does, and people can’t look behind what vegetarian food is about and not what it’s not about. The reality is that most people probably, at least once a week, have a meal that doesn’t have meat or chicken or fish in it. They just don’t call that meal “my vegetarian meal of the week.”

And then they just get real honest about it.

Well, we gotta say it: Most vegetarian food is pretty terrible.
That’s a hard thing for me to agree to [laughs]. But I think vegetarian food has a built-in audience, and [people] don’t necessarily have to try to go outside of that audience. So whether or not that makes the food good or bad, it has its audience. …There’s very few restaurants in this city where they’re expected to state their politics before you even walk in the door. But that onus is put on vegetarian restaurants, and I think it creates a world where it’s hard for vegetarian restaurants to necessarily make exciting and different food.

New Yorkers, what do you think?

Does Dirt Candy change the reputation of vegetarian food, for Metromix and everyone else?

Meatless Mouthful–Alicia Silverstone Gets Nasty

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Meatless Mouthful.

Alicia Silverstone The Kind Diet Book Launch Party

“Among the “nasty” foods is white sugar (and its friend high fructose corn and syrup). Simply put, you should just consider it crack, only sliiiiightly less addictive. White sugar leeches vitamins and minerals from your blood and bones, messes with your immune system, leads to insulin resistance, and makes you feel crazy-extreme peaks and dips in blood sugar can cause nausea, headaches and fatigue, irritability, anxiety, dizziness, heart palpitations, crying and depression. And it makes us fat.”

Paul McCartney gives a press conference at the European Parliament - Brussels

Vegetarians may be excited about Paul McCartneys Meat-Free Monday initiative, but not everyone is welcoming the singer’s push to save the planet through less meat.

During a debate at the recent European Union Parliament, McCartney went head to head with MEP Mairead McGuinness.

And although McGuinness never threatened to shock her children like Gordon Ramsay did, she made it clear she doesn’t think a veggie burger a day keeps the emissions away.

“Getting rid of livestock from the planet as a solution to climate change is too far-fetched and unrealistic a proposition to be credible,” McGuinness said.

“Research shows that a change in European diets with considerably less dairy and meat products would have only a marginal impact on the environment,” she added.

Okay. But the meat industry does produce more emissions than all forms of transportation combined.

“Lastly, those of us who enjoy a roast on Sunday and who hope to continue to do so, would never even consider a meat free Monday.”

Ah, might as well skip the roast the next day.

Leftovers are never as good as hot from the oven anyway.
