Mayim Bialik: Life’s A Lot Greener Since “Blossom”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

Premiere Screening For "REX"

Mayim Bialik is a green mommy, making her own shampoo, cleaning and granola products for her family.

In a recent interview with the Sierra Club, Mayim discussed how life on the screen has become more environmentally friendly as well.

Blossom ended when I was 19. Things are a lot different now. Recycling is a standard part of everyone’s vocabulary, which is significant because of the amount of scripts. The beauty products used aren’t tested on animals and are gentler on the environment. Green practices are becoming a much more accepted line of conversation. I don’t wear leather and that’s something easier to address now.”

Daniel Negreanu Hits The Ball Like A Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

WSOP No-Limit Texas Hold 'em World Championship

Poker playing champion Daniel Negreanu takes a little humorous heat from his buddies every now and then for his herbivore diet, as he described during a recent blog entry at cardplayer.com:

“After dinner we all went to my house to do a golf pool for the tournament. Then, Erick went after my books again. I have boxes of my book at home that are there for me to sign and he likes to mess with them, writing messages on random pages. He’ll write “I hit the ball like a vegan, signed Daniel Negreanu” or other equally stupid stuff.”

Considering this vegan since 2003 has several poker accomplishments under his belt, we’d saying hitting the ball like a veg ain’t a bad thing at all.

Keep workin’ the vegan chips, Daniel!

Vegan singer Chrissie Hynde also donated her print to the event.

When John Challis was asked why he chose to participate, he answered:

“I love cats and I have done a lot of work for charities with a similar cause. We actually inherited some feral cats on the farm and we decided to take care of them. They were breeding at the time, so we took them to the vets and found homes for their kittens. We weren’t really cat people before that, but I think that cats have a way of finding you. We have one male cat and one female- they both follow us around all of the time”.

Jon Gosselin Hailey Glassman Busted For Horse Carriage Ride

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 in Animal Issues.

Jon Gosselin and Hailey Glassman go Whole Foods shopping in New Jersey

First he played the role of dog dumper, now Jon Gosselin‘s been spotted using the controversial horse-carriage attraction to impress his lady friend Hailey Glassman.

After PETA got word of Jon riding the wild horses, they sent him a letter reminding him of the dangers involved with such an industry, not to mention the cruelties of the tourist attraction to the horses.

“Horse-drawn carriages cause countless traffic accidents that injure both horses and people, and veterinarians have shown that the horses contract lung disease from working every day in city traffic with their noses near exhaust-spewing tailpipes. The damage to horses’ lungs is comparable to what heavy smokers experience. Horses are forced to pull carriages in all weather extremes, and many of them go lame from constantly walking on hard pavement (their hooves were designed for grass and dirt). When they grow too old, tired, or ill to continue pulling heavy loads, many worn-out horses are slaughtered and turned into dog food or feed for carnivores in zoos or are shipped overseas for human consumption.”

Meatless Mouthful: Russell Simmons On Animals, Planet, America

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 in Business, Meatless Mouthful.

Russell Simmons rides his bicycle in Miami Beach

“Sometimes I’m amazed that we are still breathing. With horrible abuses of animals, the planet and human kind, it’s amazing that we are still here. But now I’m really afraid that our beloved country, America, is standing on its last wobbly legs. I’m worried that the karmic effects of our negative actions will finally come home to roost. Our lack of compassion and love could actually consume us. However, we are still being given signs from the universe, glimpses of hope and opportunities to rise up and live up to our promise. The whole world wants us to succeed. The whole world wants us to lead.”

Russell Simmons, in an article at huffingtonpost.com on America’s future.

If America is expected to be the leader, how close is it to setting a good example for animal welfare and nutrition for its citizens?

Much like Bryan Adams exposed himself to Rachael Ray, Alicia Silverstone has also opened her refrigerator to allow the celebrity chef and everyone else see what she might stock in any given day.

Here’s a peek for you food voyeurists:

RR: I don’t like regular mayonnaise, but I see you have Vegenaise—does that taste anything like mayo?

AS: I have friends who eat meat who started eating Vegenaise and love it—I don’t see any difference at all. If anything, it’s richer and creamier. You should try it!

RR: We’ll see—it’s a texture issue for me. You have almond butter in there—do you like it better than peanut butter?

AS: I know almond butter is better for me, but I do sometimes eat peanut butter. I use it mostly to make my version of Rice Krispies Treats, which I’m very proud of. I’ll give you the recipe!

Actually, we can do that.
