Lamar Odom enjoys a night out in LA with his new wife, Khloe Kardashian

Is Lamar Odom a veghead?

The basketball player and newlywed husband to Khloe Kardashian was spotted leaving a vegetarian restaurant recently by an X17 reporter.

Lamar and Khloe did attend the Stop Puppy Mills Humane Society event.

Sure would be great if another animal loving vegetarian athlete came out with a veg PSA that’s more viral than his sister-in-law’s sex tape.

Oh,  no. We did not go there.

Earthrace Sea Shepherd Delays, Skipper’s Cheese Cravings

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues.

Earthrace Sea Shepherd

Earthrace Sea Shepherd

The Sea Shepherd Earthrace boat that was set to depart from Auckland Australia and begin the journey sailing the Southern Ocean to protect whales from Japanese whaling was delayed today.

According to Skipper Pete Bethune, “last minute fit out delays” will keep the boat docked for another week.

Bethune will have one more week to give into his dairy cravings, as crew members will once again be required to eat vegan during the Whale Wars filming.

“No more cheese or chocolate on the boat so that’s pretty hard,” Bethune said.

Quick, now’s the chance for Bethune to stock up on the vegan chocolate and nut cheese before the three month sail.

Bethune is not vegetarian by choice, but following the Sea Shepherd rules.

2nd Annual NOFA-NY Luncheon - New York City

Deirdre Imus launched her own line of green cleaning products, Cleaning the Greening, for households and hospitals years ago.

Now she’s ready to green clean the world as the products are set to enter the global marketplace.

The wife of radio host Don Imus has been a vegan for 25 years and says its was quite natural to combine her passion for health and green living into a business.

A few excerpts from a recent interview with Anna Clark of Greenbiz.com:

AC: Why are toxin-free cleaning products critical to safeguarding our health?
DI: Cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease in children. And cancer isn’t the only epidemic. One in six kids is obese. One of six kids has asthma. One in eight children is born premature. One out of 60 boys is diagnosed with autism. We’ve seen rapid growth in Tourette syndrome and diabetes. Another chronic disease growing among children is arthritis.

AC: How did you execute your vision?
DI: I approached Hackensack University Medical Center to do a pilot program. In 2000, the word green wasn’t even on the map, so I didn’t expect it to be an easy sell. I walked into the CEO John Ferguson’s office with a stack of research. He stopped me in my tracks and told me to go do it. That is literally how I got started ‘greening the cleaning.’

AC: How can someone become a distributor?
DI: Interested distributors can get information at www.DIenviro.com or call and speak to Jim Ronchi or Don O’Hagan.

Bummer that Alicia’s fans might not get their copies signed now.

Cows And The Earth: A Story Of Kinder Dairy Farming - Book Launch Photocall

Chrissie Hynde posed with these two lovely models in a photo shoot for the book Cows and the Earth: A Story of Kinder Dairy Farming.

The book by Ranchor Prime contains a preface by Chrissie, and details an experiment which ran a dairy farm without slaughtering animals or using fossil fuels.

Chrissie got to fulfill a lifelong dream and milk a cow.

“She said to me, ‘One of the things I’ve always wanted to do before I die is to milk a cow,’ so she spent the day hand-milking cows at the manor,” a source said. “She loved it, she spent the whole day there.”

Wonder if Chrissie also got bovine autographs before the day ended.

Hynde has spoken out against the dairy industry, saying it “turns cows into robots” and uses “grotesque and archaic machinery”.

“We need to reassess our relationship to the natural world,” the singer added.

If experiments like the one described in Cows and the Earth can be applied to more dairy farms, would you consume milk again knowing no animals would be slaughtered?

Southpark “Whale Whores” Thoughts By Captain Paul Watson

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues.

Paul Watson "South Park" "Whale Whores"

Paul Watson "South Park" "Whale Whores"

The recent parody of Whale Wars by Southpark has prompted the Sea Shepherd Captain Paul Watson to respond to the comedy show mocking him.

Watson’s not at all offended and explains his stance in a recently released statement.

It’s Good to be Lampooned:
“I have to say that being lampooned on South Park is hardly something to complain about. They spelt Sea Shepherd right and they brought the issue of the dolphin and whale slaughter by the Japanese to a very large audience. I could not really care less how I was portrayed personally, I’m in good company along with Tom Cruise and Sean Penn.”

They’re Not As Pussified As You Think:
“It’s a tough situation we are in. We can’t hurt the whalers and we have to stay within the boundaries of the law in opposing illegal whaling operations. If that makes us pussies so be it, it’s better than being portrayed as killers. The point however that was missed is that we have cut the Japanese kill quotas in half over the last three years and cost them their profits. Our objective is to bankrupt them and we are doing just that.”

It Means Whale Wars Is Popular:
“South Park has however linked Japan to the horrific and senseless slaughter of dolphins and whales and all in all that’s a damn good message in our opinion. What the Whale Whores episode also achieved was to highlight just how successful Whale Wars has been as a television show and how Sea Shepherd is out on the high seas actually trying to do something about the problem.”

The Captain has some good points.

“The Conscious Cook” Tal Ronnen Interview–Vegetarian Star

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 30th, 2009 in Authors, Books, Chefs, Food & Drink, Interviews.

Chef Tal Ronnen is the author of The Conscious Cook, a hot new cookbook being snatched off the bookshelves by vegetarians, vegans and food lovers in general. Tal is the chef who helped design Oprah Winfrey‘s meal plans when she went vegan for 21 days and has worked with Chrissie Hynde‘s restaurant, The Vegiterranean. He’s been a vegetarian for 19 years and a vegan for 11 years. Tal took a few moments away from braising tempeh to give Vegetarian Star an exclusive interview.

Tofu, Tempeh, or Seitan:
It depends on the application. I think my personal preference for home is definitely tempeh. It’s a less processed product. It’s fermented so it’s got nutritional benefits from the fermentation process. With that said, it has to be cooked properly. People will just cut tempeh up and sauté it or stir fry it or something like that. [But] Because it’s so dense, it’s hard to get any flavor to penetrate. Tofu just acts like a sponge, it just sucks up all the marinade. [With] Tempeh, the best way to get the flavor in there is to braise it. So cook it in a flavorful liquid and the flavors can change based on the dish that you cook. So if you’re doing something like Tex Mex or South of the Border you can braise it in a stock that’s got chilies and peppers. If you’re doing something like Asian, it can have soy sauce or ginger. When you’re cooking it in a broth, you’re able to penetrate tempeh. After it’s cooked in a broth, you start cooking with it. So I can grill it or sauté it, but the first step for me whenever I work with tempeh is to braise it.

On Guest Chefs in The Conscious Cook:
We wanted to have a really broad view of what professional vegetarian cooking looks like. And [we did this] by bringing in people who have influenced me or I’ve influenced throughout the years. All the chefs that are highlighted in the book are people who’ve been a big influence in my culinary career or someone that I’ve worked with very closely. And by doing that we’re able to really show different perspectives in the book, not just my perspective with vegetarian cooking.

Favorite recipes from The Conscious Cook:
I love the celery root soup. I love the Gardein scaloppini with the shiitake sauce. And the banana  rum cheesecake I think is really great.
