Tim Gunn Tells How To Get The Faux Caveman Look

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Fashion, Fur, Videos.

Vegan, ethical blogger Discerning Brute caught up with fashion expert and Project Runway’s Tim Gunn during Fashion Week in New York to get his thoughts on fur in the fashion industry.

Gunn has recorded an anti-fur video in the past and has such a fearful reputation, fur wearing celebrities run the opposite direction when they see him.

He explained to The Brute that while he doesn’t necessarily advocate fake fur, there are plenty out there for those interested in getting that “cavemen look.”

“If someone wants to look like a cavemen…if that’s the look that they want, they sure have a good one [selection of fake fur],” Gunn said.

Check out the video to hear Tim talk, and if you’re a speed reader, you can view the credit roll that appears in the video listing all the fur-free fashion designers.

Jeremy Piven’s Mercury Madness Results In Mockery: Fishy Fool!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Actors, Not So Vegetarian.

15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Red Carpet

He looks suspicious, and the Actors’ Equity grievance committee is looking to uncover the truth.

Jeremy Piven was set to appear in front of the committee today to give his case on how mercury poison forced him to withdraw from the production of Speed-the-Plow.

Add one more reason to the list of why you shouldn’t eat fish, besides the fact that it’s bad for the planet (and the fishes too, of course): People will laugh their arses off when you get sick.

“It’s my understanding that he’ll be there — unless he has too much sushi on the plane from LA,” someone involved in the proceedings joked, according to the New York Post.

The actor went on sick leave from the Broadway production months ago after he claimed doctors found as much as five times the amount of normal mercury levels in his blood.

He never returned to the show, even after he allegedly got better.

The Producers of Speed-the-Plow alleged Jeremy really wasn’t sick with mercury poisoning, and that he went partying during the time he supposedly was on bed rest.

If Piven can’t produce the results showing he was sick, he could be forced to settle financially with the producers.

Piven had said then that, “years of being a fish eating vegetarian was enough to do the trick and act as a catalyst.”

Justin Sane: It Sucks Not Eating Meat!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians.

Vans Warped Tour

Anti-Flag’s guitarist Justin Sane is vegetarian, but he’s willing to admit he likes meat.

From an interview with Alter The Press:

“So it’s really environmentally unfriendly to eat meat, most people don’t realise, but it’s something I try and get across: If you want to be an environmentalist, you really should be a vegetarian. That said, i really do miss meat, it sucks not eating meat! But it’s something i’m willing to give up for what i believe in.”

It’s nice to hear an honest response like that from someone so passionate about their vegetarianism. While it’s easy for those of us who vomit at the smell of ribs at your brother-in-law’s cookout every 4th of July to avoid meat, some vegs are really holding back from sinking their teeth into a rib-eye because of their beliefs.

And since simmering dead flesh is thrown at us more than sex in advertisement, it must be harder for them to restrain from temptation than it is for the Twilight Vegetarian Vampires to keep from sucking on their classmates in homeroom.

Enter fake meats.

In the beginning, there were simple veggie burgers. Now, we have veggie hot dogs, bacon, and sausages in every variety from Polish to Italian. What’s even better is that it’s easier to fulfill our “needs” more than ever as mainstream grocery stores are stocking up their vegetarian aisles and private and public establishments serving food have meatless options.

Are you a carnivore at heart who refrains because of your beliefs? What’s your favorite fake meat to keep you going?

Richie Rich - Backstage - Fall 09 MBFW

Pamela Anderson will be the guest of honor at Animal Rights Foundation of Florida’s 20th Anniversary Gala on March 14 at the Broward County Convention Center in Miami, Florida.

Hopefully, she’ll be wearing more clothes than this that night.

The event will be hosted by vegetarian and animal lover Bob Barker and guests such as famous vegan Dr. Neal Barnard and Ingrid Newkirk will be able to chow down on delicious vegan grub.

The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) is celebrating 20 years looking out for Florida’s non human critters through education and appearances throughout the community.

Although everybody will come for the food (or in hopes Pamela Anderson will show up half naked), besides that, there will be silent and live auctions for items such as an autographed poster of Kim Basinger’s L.A. Confidential poster.

Tickets are $250 per person and all proceeds from the gala go to the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida.

Anthony Kiedis HBO TV Series Should Show His Vegan Journey

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Anthony Keidis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a friend go for a bike ride in Malibu, Ca

Red Hot Chili Pepper Anthony Kiedis is heading for the big screen.

The story of his life is set to be turned into an HBO TV series, taking place in L.A’s  rock & roll culture in the ’70s. There are hints that the title will be similar to his autobiography Scar Tissue and much of it will focus on his childhood growing up with his father and the path he took to illegal drugs.

“I think it will make for an interesting TV show,” Kiedis told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve already shed my tears and yelled. The painful part is all behind me. Now it is fun. It is a project I get to do with my father later in his life — when he is ready to reflect.”

But wouldn’t it be fantastic if the movie also hit on Anthony’s vegan diet and lifestyle?

The singer went vegan after watching a video on factory farming. In addition, a doctor recommended his son follow a vegan diet due to health issues he was having.

As legendary as the Red Hot Chili Peppers are and with Kiedis’ popularity, showing segments of his vegan journey could have millions googling the word the week the movie’s released.

Top Chef Host, Hardee’s Gal Padma Lakshmi Has Vegetarian Past

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Not So Vegetarian, TV Hosts.

2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards - Arrivals

A very, very distant vegetarian past.

Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi is starring in a commercial for Hardee’s, advertising the fast food giant’s Bacon Western Thickburger.

Lakshmi has no problem chowing away on that pork and beef, but there was a time…

“I grew up a vegetarian,” Lakshmi told People. “Then, because I grew up in the states, I started slowly eating meat. First it was bologna sandwiches, or pepperoni on pizza. As a teenager, [my friends and I] would always go have burgers. I would scarf them down!”

Seems like Padma is just one of the many examples of those who immigrate to the US and unfortunately, adopt unhealthy diets  in addition to other American cultural practices.

Thickburger girl says she works out like crazy and doesn’t just sit around eating burgers all day, which is why she’s still able to maintain her trim figure. But Padma, really? How trim are your arteries?

The commercial was directed by Chris Applebaum, the same guy who brought Paris Hilton and a burger together for a 2005 Hardee’s ad.

It’s time a veg celebrity did a promo for some fake meat. What do you guys think? Pamela Anderson wearing nothing but a Boca burger? Ginnifer Goodwin with a soystache?
