But is Minnie Mouse cage-free?

Disney has come up with its own brand of eggs. All your favorite cartoons from classic Mickey to Cars characters that will ultimately be indiscernible once crushed against the side of the stove top before frying appear on the eggs that are hormone and anti-biotic free.

Good to know at least Disney is using products from chickens who weren’t on steroids, but it’s not sure whether they’re from cage free animals. Or if the dyes contain any animal derivatives.

Hopefully, they were free-range and went on all the magic carpet rides with Aladdin they desired.

The cute marketing idea that probably comes with an extra price tag Ebeneezer Scrooge wouldn’t be interested in will have children dragging their parents to the dairy section of the grocery store, so let’s hope Minnie’s products are as egg-thical as they possibly can be.

Ashley Judd’s Got Her Eye On Sarah Palin

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Politicians, Videos.

Around Park City - 2009 Sundance Film Festival Day 3

Actress Ashley Judd is watching Sarah Palin more closely than someone trying to score points throwing snowballs at her in a PETA game.

The Golden Globe nominated actress has joined forces with Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund in a web based campaign against Palin and her anti-conservation views.

According to EyeonPalin.org, the website is a “national campaign dedicated to exposing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s anti-conservation agenda.”

The organization first put Palin on the spot last year during the Presidential campaign season when it highlighted her record supporting the aerial killing of wolves.

“Sarah Palin isn’t fading into the background, so neither are we,” said Defenders Action Fund President Rodger Schlickeisen. “Given her known political aspirations, the American public deserves to know what she’s doing in Alaska, and about her extreme anti-conservation policies. The list is long, and we will document it all, from her continued promotion of the aerial slaughter of wolves and bears, to her lawsuit to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, even as the sea ice melts beneath it.”

Watch the video below to hear Ashley give her two cents on the matter.

Pink’s Ex-Hubby Carey Hart Gets Inked Not Minked

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Business, Fur, Reality TV.

careyhartpetafur721Ladies we know you don’t get enough of your naked men from PETA, but here’s a little something to satisfy.

Carey Hart, ex-husband to singer Pink, has recently teamed up with PETA to raise awareness of using fur in fashion by inviting you to consider wearing your own permanent coat-of tattoos.

“No one’s expecting you to be the perfect citizen…just living consciously [as much as you can].”

Hart got into animal rights through Pink, and the two of them own three dogs.

“It’s just ridiculous, you know?” he says of the fur industry. “It’s like you’re gonna destroy animals so that you can look cool in the nightclubs or you can look cool walking down the street in New York. You know I don’t get behind that. I think it’s very petty and very shallow. And then once I saw the investigation and the actual process it just disgusted me.”

You can view the video of Hart talking more about animals, fur, and looking hot at peta.org.

Vegetarian Director Paul McGuigan Pushed Blowing Up Fish

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 in Directors and Producers, Not So Vegetarian.

Premiere Of Summit Entertainment's

Paul McGuigan is the director of Push, a sci-fi thriller about young American ex-Pats with telekinetic powers running from the U.S. Government. Some have compared the film to the NBC television show “Heroes.”

One scene of Push involves an explosion in a market where water and fish are thrown everywhere. McGuigan described how he and the crew discussed creating the scene to Movies Online.

“So we have a fish tank here and it’s going to blow up and then the fish is going to fly in the air or something and then I want you to come around here and then you go around that way and then, see this bit here?” he said.

One problem. There are live fish in the tank. One possibly bigger problem. McGuigan is vegetarian, had no problem blowing up live fish for the movie and only stopped because the actors (who were probably non vegetarian) protested.

“Oh no, we couldn’t blow up [the fish]. I wanted to do it. Did you hear that story? I’m a vegetarian and I had fish in the tank and all the actors came over and went, “Why are the fish still here?” and I went, “I’m just going to blow them up.” And they went, “What?!” I went, “Well, we’re in Hong Kong. Have you seen the markets on the corners?” Because you know all the fish are fresh and so they just take them out and go “Boom, boom.””

“So it never dawned on me and then suddenly when it dawned on me, I thought actually these guys are right. So we took all the fish out and we had no fish. So the only people harmed during this movie were the actors, not the fish. There’s actually no fish there if you look at the sequence, there’s no fish flying about. I actually wanted fish to be flying about but I was told no.”

Good to know the omnivores are watching the animals’ backs when us vegetarians suddenly develop moral schizophrenia and rationalize making fish bombs even though we don’t eat them.

Guitarist and co-singer/songwriter of punk rock band Anti-Flag, Justin Sane, was inspired by mom and dad.

His parents opened the first vegetarian restaurant in his home town and he was exposed to their activism as they participated in rallies while he was growing up.

Is Twilight Saga Really Animal Friendly?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 in Actors, Actresses, Animal Issues, Film & TV.

Twilight - Germany Premiere

Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s Twilight Saga snagged a Libby Award for Most Animal Friendly movie, but did voters watch the entire flick?

Yes, Bella ate vegetarian meals throughout the movie like Gardenburgers, spinach salad, and mushroom ravioli, but that may be where the animal friendliness ended.

The “vegetarian vampires” were the biggest paradox. Vegetarian to these blood sucking guys and gals meant avoiding human flesh and eating animals instead-which in our world of daylight and non Topaz colored eyed humans is the very contradiction of a vegetarian.

A deer is killed at the beginning of the movie. Characters wore fur in some scenes.

Is this the most liberal of animal friendly recognitions one can receive?

The winners were decided by a vote from peta2.org’s audience, so the readers may have automatically voted for the most popular movie that mentioned anything vegetarian or animal without doing their homework.

Personally, we cast our vote for the Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson big screen hit, Marley & Me, which used rescue dogs on the set.

Cheryl Cole departing the x factor final last night looking very happy

Cheryl Cole, judge on the UK television show X Factor, learned a hard lesson  Nigella Lawson did not long ago that joking around about animals is not always taking humorously.

Cole made the suggestion during an interview that Nadine Coyle, member of the band Girls Aloud owned a coat made of real fur.

Coyle walked into a store and picked up what she thought was a 500 pound coat (~$700 U.S.) but when she got to the checkout counter, the coat rang up at 5,000 pounds (~$5,000 U.S.) which led Cole to suggest it had to be made of fur.

Here’s a bit from the conversation that took place.

Cheryl: “It must be fur, is it fur?”

Nadine: “It’s fur.”

Cheryl: “There you go, it’s real fur.”

Nadine: “It’s like, er, tiger, like a white and black tiger.”

After animal rights groups heard this, Coyle and her publicists were flooded with calls.

A spokesperson for Coyle and her band said that the ladies were only joking, but he couldn’t confirm the materials in Coyle’s coat.

“You’ll see it’s Cheryl that said it was real fur – Nadine didn’t know what it was made of. Nadine is in America now, so I can’t ask her about the coat but I doubt she knows what it is made of.”

We doubt it was tiger fur, but really, could it have been mink, fox, or any other combination of critters used in the fur industry?

Here’s hoping Nadine just bought an over-priced coat that only celebrities can afford that is completely synthetic.

Vegan Erykah Badu Twitters Natural Childbirth

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 in Children, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

3rd Annual Black Girls Rock! Awards

When this gal says natural, she really means it.

Erykah Badu made a statement not long ago that her children are being raised as organic vegans and she prefers natural births.

That means no drugs, folks.

Erykah is so serious about letting everyone know she’s natural, she and parter Jay Electronica blogged about it DURING THE CHILDBIRTH! Jay wrote:

“Labor has begun. Everybody standback. No hospitals. No doctors. No medicine. Were waiting on midwife to show up. I’m doing foot squeezes and foot rubs when the contractions hit…Ok… The midwife is here now and a few family members. Feels like a scene from the color purple. She’s dialated to 8 1/2 centimeters. Getting closer. She says she feels like she’s ready to push. Feb 1. 2009 my first child, my daughter was born at 1:30 pm exactly. Its the happiest day of my life.”

Congrats to the happy couple. Welcome to world vegan baby!
