Chef Michael Ginor of Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York and author of Foie Gras: A Passion is weighing in on PETA’s The Fine Faux Gras Challenge appears to have a Gordon Ramsay split personality when it comes to creating a vegetarian version of foie gras and the challenge presented by PETA for chefs to do so.

He thinks it’s a great idea. But no serious chef would do it. It provides another option. But chefs aren’t supposed to make substitutions. An excerpt from The National Post:

I think it’s great. People should always have alternatives. I also think it’s ridiculous in a sense, because you can find substitutes for steak. It’s another vegetarian thing. It’s not going to be foie gras, it’s obviously another PR campaign to try and get people to not eat foie gras. They’re not going to find an alternative to foie gras because there just isn’t one.

Ginor then went on to say that he hasn’t been asked to enter the competition and “no serious high end chef would want to do this.”

No, a faux foie gras chef isn’t a hardcore chef. And chefs have better things to do.

Before you know it, there will be a substitution for quail, a substitution for squab and a substitution for steak. That’s not the point of a restaurant.

We already have substitutes for steak, chicken, pork, and the like. And what’s even more ridiculous is that these are served in restaurants. And prepared by chefs! Not only in vegetarian restaurants, but other dining establishments who recognize the growing number of vegetarians (an estimated 5.7 million U.S. adults in 2000-FindArticles – How many vegetarians are there? A 2003 national Harris Interactive survey question sponsored by The Vegetarian Resource Group
Vegetarian Journal, May-June, 2003) and growing.

Looking forward to hearing his response when he tries the winner’s faux foie gras. We’re sure it will probably be something along the lines of “It tastes the same, but no serious chef should ever admit it.”

Lisa Bonet: Bringing Baby Up Vegetarian?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 in Actresses, Children.

Lisa Bonet, husband Jason Momoa, and baby Lola Momoa shop for clothes

Congratulations to Life on Mars actress Lisa Bonet! She recently gave birth to baby boy, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa.

Yes, he’ll have to put a few more hours into kindergarten homework to master how to spell that. Unless he just goes by Wolf.

The actress is 40, but you’d never be able to tell from looking at her. Not to mention she used fantastic cougar skills to grab herself a 29 year old man!

No doubt her vegetarian lifestyle has kept her looking good since her “Cosby Show” days, so we’re wondering if baby Wolf will be reared veg as well.

We’ve seen some celebrities insist on a strict vegan diet, only giving in when a divorce court forces them to. Then there’s Diane Keaton, who claims she wouldn’t want to force it on her children.

It’s poll time. What do you guys think? Will Lisa only have meat free baby food for her newest bundle of joy?

Dennis Rodman Would Rather Be Fired Than Wear Mink

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Business, Fur, Reality TV.

A few years ago, Dennis Rodman wasn’t even wearing a jersey when he agreed to do an anti-fur ad for PETA.

So why are we talking about a retired basketball player famous for dressing in bridal gowns who got naked over three years ago? Because he’s back in the limelight as one of the contestants on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice.

Rodman, along with other celebs like Tom Green and recently fur shunning Khloe Kardashian, will have the pleasurable experience of being humiliated by the world’s greatest real estate investor who also holds the title for the World’s Worst Hairdo.

Rodman has already broken boundaries outside of the boardroom. He was the first man that had enough balls to get naked and almost show his…well you know.

There are rumors that he sometimes followed a vegetarian diet, but it’s definitely been confirmed he detests the use of fur in fashion.

According to Contact Music, Rodman said, “furriers have pushed free furs” on him over the years, and he’s always refused. He even said that he was always embarrassed when an ex-wife wore furs.

With a set of ethics like those, there’s no reason why the former NBA bad boy shouldn’t be “hired.”

Eric Stoltz No Andre 3000: Wants Elaborate Last Meal

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

5th Annual Designing Hollywood Gala

Andre 3000 Benjamin is no George Bush and would love to have broccoli as his last meal.

However, actor Eric Stoltz (Mask, Pulp Fiction), who currently is guest starring on “Grey’s Anatomy” as a death row serial killer, dreams of something a little more elaborate and gasped at the idea that the budget for a death row inmate’s last meal is $30.

As a vegetarian, he frequently treats himself to dishes of pasta with eggplant and mushrooms and insists that he would have a “smorgasbord of all the different foods.”

One of those foods is pizza, but he insists that’s still too simple for a last meal.

Perhaps a death row catering compliments of one of the top eight vegetarian restaurants would suite his fancy?

Show At UK Music Hall Of Fame 2005

For all you gamers who think Rockband is your prized possession, here’s a contest you’ll wanna sign up for.

Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders are offering a chance for one lucky winner who also happens to be an animal lover to star in a music video lip syncing “Boot of Chinese Plastic,” the official fan video that will appear on YouTube, Pretenders, Apple Quick-Time, and PETA websites.

The contest is Chrissie’s way of both promoting her new song and standing up for her beliefs about how animals shouldn’t be used for fashion purposes.

The simple requirement is that you make a YouTube video of yourself singing the song (lyrics right here) and make sure you show your “plastic boots” sometime while on camera.

Runners up will at least appear on The Pretenders website and receive a limited edition vinyl of the latest album, Break Up The Concrete.

If you ever wanted to audition for American Idol, but didn’t have the guts to do it in person, here’s your second chance to do your thing in the comfort of your own home. Not to mention no evil Simon commenting on your performance.
