Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 13th, 2010 in Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion, Videos.

With the cold season just hitting some of us, it’s still not too late to grab a few winter-wear items. Vegan designer and founder of Vaute Coture Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has an interview in the Huffington Post where she gives alternatives to staying warm without using wool.

“It depends on the utility & look you’re aiming for, but if you’re going for the look but don’t need the warmth, cotton moleskin is a great option,” Hilgart said. “If you need warmth (as I always did in Chicago), high tech fabrics are needed– Polartec is an excellent one that includes fabrics that are all recyclable, and often recycled.”

Oprah.com Dispels Vegan Fashion Myths With Vaute Couture

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 27th, 2010 in Fashion.

Stella McCartney Fashion Show - Paris

Oprah.com is featuring Vaute Couture founder Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, as she explains how being vegan is more than what you put in your mouth.

The vegan fashion designer who’s collections are favored by celebrities such as Ginnifer Goodwin, has listed five major misconceptions people have about vegan clothing, along with her explanation of why these myths aren’t true.

One common complaint you might hear from someone trying to go vegan on a budget is the price, for example.

Leanne explains that not everyone needs to purchase the $1,300 Stella McCartney dress and places like Target may give you the synthetic style you need without giving up an entire month’s rent.

“Whether you’re in the market for a $30 vegan bag or a $1,000 vegan coat, you can and will find something on any budget. “It’s a matter of scale,” Leanne says. “A small, independent label using cutting-edge fabrics will have higher costs per piece because they aren’t spreading out a large production run.”"

Animals that aren’t killed for clothing aren’t necessarily treated well to obtain fabrics, and serious vegans needs to consider the pain involved in harvesting items like wool and down.

“Weeks after birth, most lambs have their ears punched and tails chopped, and most males are castrated—all without anesthetics. Shearing isn’t any better; it’s done for speed rather than precision and often results in bloody slashing and mutilation.”

Several vegetarian/vegan fashion designers are featured in a chron.com article on cruelty-free fashion, including Leanne Hilgart of vegan outerwear company Vaute Couture, Inder Bedi of Matt & Nat handbags and Elizabeth Olsen of Olsen Haus Vegan Shoe.

“Fashion isn’t my background, but I’m interested in fulfilling a need,” Hilgart said. “I didn’t really know if people would respond, so I crossed my fingers. A lot of people ordered their winter coats in June.”

“All the pretty, warm coats weren’t vegan, so I was always cold. I thought I was the only person who wanted one.”

Elizabeth Olsen started Olsen Haus in 2008 and her shoes range from $150-$265.

“There was such a big gap in the market for stylish vegan shoes and, once I went vegan, what was I going to wear?” she said. “I needed to do this. It’s not granola fashion, and I’m not a hippie. I made what I like and what’s on trend.”

The September Issue Los Angeles Special Screening

If you could pick any one celebrity to dress vegan, who would it be?

Obviously those fur wearing hags of Hollywood top the list.

Vegnews.com recently spoke to three vegan fashion designers, Inder Bedi of Matt & Nat, Elizabeth Olsen of OlsenHaus, and Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart of Vaute Couture on who they’d like to play dress up with.

Leanne of Vaute Couture answered:

“I adore Ginnifer Goodwin, and she has just reserved her own Vaute coat! This made my month. Next, I would flip to dress Ellen [DeGeneres]. To steal the immortal words of Sting, “Every little thing she does is magic.” For non-vegan celebrity, Audrey Hepburn is my all-time favorite.”

Inder would like to take his fashion stab at Natalie Portman and Madonna.

Emily Deschanel and Cameron Diaz are favorites for Olsen.

If you want to copy Ginnifer’s style, you can choose your very own Vaute coat online at vautecouture.com.
