Quantcast Vegetarian StarEllen Degeneres (7)

When vegetarian celebrities partner with not so vegetarian companies, it’s one of those C & C Music Factory moments: Things That Make You Go Hmmm.

Carrie Underwood is the new face of Olay skin products and according to USA Today, is the first “celebrity ambassador” for the brand.

Olay is owned by Proctor & Gamble, a company, that continues to test a small percentage of its products on animals.

PETA’s Caring Consumer Database lists Olay as a product tested on animals and the UK Times Online says a preservative found in some Olay products, butylparaben, was tested on pregnant rats in the U.S. in 2004.

Ellen DeGeneres Makes Spring Rolls With Roberto Martin (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 10th, 2010 in Chefs, Recipes, TV Hosts, Videos.

Ellen DeGeneres brought her favorite right hand man in food, her personal chef Roberto Martin, on the show to demonstrate preparing vegetarian spring rolls.

Vegetarians just love dipping–ice cream, veggie dip, skinny dip…whoa, maybe too much information. But it’s always fun to make your own soy sauce, vinegar and spice dip for Asian treats like these and the recipe for such, along with the spring rolls can be found on Ellen’s page.

You discover something new every day and today’s lesson is black bean pasta, which is used in the creation.

“It’s so good for you. It’s really high in protein,” Martin comments on the pasta that’s a part of an entirely vegan meal.

Ellen DeGeneres “Tails Inc.” June 2010 And Stamps To The Rescue

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 24th, 2010 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Ellen DeGeneres is featured on the June 2010 cover of Tails Inc.

Inside, the magazine discusses the vegan talk show host announcing the United States Postal Service (USPS) Stamps to the Rescue campaign and its creation of Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet commemorative postage stamps on her daytime television show.

DeGeneres invited U.S. Postmaster General John E. Potter to her March show to unveil the stamps that produced a quarter of a million pre-orders a little over a month later.

“As one of the country’s most influential and high-profile animal advocates, DeGeneres’ willingness to jump in with both feet to partner on this important initiative is hardly surprising. It’s also not surprising Potter chose to focus this year’s USPS social-awareness cause on adopting shelter pets, as he’s an animal lover and enjoys spending time with his pooch at home. But he also might have been swayed toward promoting an animal-welfare issue given the popularity of USPS 2002 social-awareness Neuter or Spay stamp. A full 100 percent of all 200 million stamps were sold.”

Ellen DeGeneres Features “Sweet Freedom” Ricki Heller Cookbook

"Sweet Freedom" Ricki Heller

"Sweet Freedom" Ricki Heller

Ellen DeGeneres recently featured Ricki Heller‘s book, Sweet Freedom: Desserts You’ll Love Without Wheat, Eggs, Dairy or Refined Sugar, on her website.

When she’s not teaching or working as a part time cooking instructor and chef, this PhD in Modern American Literature blogs at dietdessertsndogs.

Although some might believe a vegan diet is exclusive, Heller believes its the only way of eating that can include the most people. Here’s what she’s has to say:

“Vegan food is more inclusive than non-vegan food. An omnivore can certainly join in on a vegan meal, but the opposite isn’t true. So presenting vegan recipes means presenting recipes anyone can enjoy.”

Desserts are the perfect example of vegan never leaving anyone out.

When was the last time you saw someone turn down a cupcake?

Some examples of Heller’s non dessert recipes, including veggie patties and kale and avocado salad, can be found here.

Ellen DeGeneres Comic Book. Bluewater Productions

Ellen DeGeneres Comic Book. Bluewater Productions

Ellen DeGeneres Bluewater Productions Comic Book has already sold out and is being reprinted next month.

That’s great news for the Humane Society of the United States, who benefits from a portion of the proceeds from the book, but members of the Sportsmen’s Alliance are targeting the book’s production company like they target deer in the forest.

After an unsuccessful attempt to halt the book’s relationship with the Humane Society by writing to the publisher, the group posted on their website an urge for members to contact Bluewater individually.

And so they did.

“Headed by vegans” is what one writer said of the Humane Society.

The horror!

“I am amazed that a comics publisher would elevate a person of ‘DeGenerates’ (sic) background …Children are the readers of comics, and they do not need indoctrination into less-than-acceptable lifestyles…”

A more appropriate lifestyle suggestion was not included, but it could be assumed it consists of teaching children to mount animal heads on the wall and eat anything you’re capable of shooting.

Bluewater publisher Darren Davis explained it is completely up to the celebrity what charitable organization profits from sales.

“Ellen chose the Humane Society” said Davis, “an animal rights organisation she has supported for years.”

The Humane Society, as well as any other charity a celebrity featured in the comic book series chooses, receives 30% of the profits from sales.

Vegan Ellen DeGeneres “Out Magazine” Most Influential Gay

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 16th, 2010 in Pop Culture, TV Hosts.

People's Choice Awards 2010 - Show

Out magazine has compiled its annual “Most Influential Gay Men and Women” and vegan Ellen DeGeneres is number one on the list.

Besides her presence on television and activism for gay rights, Ellen’s impact on the animal rights movement is touched on as well in Out’s short description of why she topples the competition.

From Out:

“A passionate advocate for marriage equality, an avid opponent of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” and staunch defender of animal rights, DeGeneres’s enormous platform is many an American’s gain.”

Other notables who’ve made or are making contributions to the vegetarian and animal community are Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, who recorded an anti-fur PSA and frowns upon contestants who attempt to use it in competition.

Also, representative Jared Polis, who recently introduced the Healthy School Meals Act that will hopefully introduce more meat free and non dairy beverage options in school districts, is in the top 10.

For the entire list, visit Out.
