Time's 100 Most Influential People In The World

Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently touched on the new study that suggested eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day isn’t as beneficial in preventing cancer as once thought.

The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, followed thousands of Europeans in 10 different countries over nine years and only found a weak association between cancer and produce intake.

Specifically, the study found those who got an extra 2 servings of fruits and vegetables a day reduced their cancer risk by 4%, versus the 20% or 30% found in previous studies that launched the famous “Five a Day” campaign.

It’s thought this exaggeration was found because previous studies used healthier populations who were less likely to get cancer and more likely to demonstrate other health conscious practices to begin with.

Does that mean you should toss your daily apple to the birds?

Not exactly, unless you enjoy feeding them.

“Experts do agree still, of course, that you should eat your carrots, your tomatoes, your spinach, et cetera, it’s good for your heart,” Dr. Gupta said on a recent segment on CNN. “It’s good for your waistline as well. And, by the way, keeping the fat off is also a good thing because the estrogen in fat can fuel some cancers.”

Fruits and vegetables contain fiber, which keep you fuller, causing you to eat less, which is a proven way to keep fat off.

The Official Teen Choice Awards Pre-Party

The March/April 2009 issue of VegNews features an article titled, “20 Under 30,” about young activists who are the faces of vegetarianism.

Nicole Lapin, CNN news anchor, made the cut!

The 24 year old has a program in which she too recognizes young people who are making a difference in the world, “Young People Who Rock,” which highlights “talented, motivated, don’t-take-no-for-an-answer leaders in politics, business, entertainment, and social activism.”

Nicole’s a vegan, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she’s high maintenance. She once mentioned how easy it is to make meals out of vegan items, and that she could eat anywhere, including a steak house or a gas station.

Congrats to Nicole for making the cut. For the list of other notable young activists, including two awesome bloggers from Supervegan.com, pick up a copy of VegNews.

The Ashley Judd vs. Sarah Palin feud now has a third party jumping in. CNN has featured a clip from Showbiz Tonight with several people weighing in on the debate, but it looks as though they’re all weighted down on Palin’s side.

Recap: Sarah Palin thinks Alaskans should be able to shoot wolves from a plane. Ashley Judd says no. Ashley teams up with Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund to record a video, helping to give the group publicity as they keep adding details to their “list” of the decisions Palin has made regarding the environment and animals. Sarah Palin calls them “extreme.” Judd get on Larry King Live to further discuss Palin’s record. Even The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck throws her two cents in

Sit back and take in the latest discussion, folks. Gotta feeling there’s much more to come.
