Hope Mark Malkoff Packed Lots Of Vegan Protein Bars On AirTran

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 in Comedians.

Comedian and writer Mark Malkoff plans to stay on a plane and fly continuously for 30 days to break the Guinness Book of World Records and conquer his fear of flying.

His goal is not to leave the AirTran plane, so he’ll have to stock up on a month’s worth of meatless goodies, since he’s vegetarian, which ajc.com cited as being one of the potential challenges on his trip.

Malkoff is a writer for Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. Is he the reason why Stephen Colbert has poked fun of vegetarians in the past? Yeah, probably.

His previous outrageous stunts include attempting to visit all 171 Starbucks stores in Manhattan in 24 hours.

Good thing Mark’s a vegetarian to offset all those emissions, because he sure is making a big carbon footprint with 30 days of flying.

Mark’s blog and videos of the event can be viewed at markonairtran.com.

Leilani Munter is an environmentalist and race car driver who races in both Indy Lights, the development league of IndyCar and ARCA, a development league of NASCAR.

Is anyone else in your family vegetarian?
As far as family members go, I have two vegetarian nieces right now. All three of my sisters have at one time been vegetarian and my sister Natascha was vegetarian throughout both of her pregnancies and during breastfeeding, which is interesting, because those are my two nieces that are now vegetarians. She told me that she had read that whatever you feed a child from zero to three is what they will crave for life. So she did not feed them meat and both of them are vegetarian by their own choice. Also, when I was a child, I never craved sweets, my mother told me that I always would refuse cookies and ask for parsley instead and to this day, I don’t crave sweet foods.

Is Craig (Leilani’s husband) vegetarian too? Did you have any eco features about the wedding?
Craig is not [completely] vegetarian but I would say he is about 95% vegetarian now. I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw him eat meat and we never, ever bring meat into our house. We had a small seaside wedding in New Zealand (where Craig is from) and we had an eco conscious cruelty free vegetarian meal. Our wedding invitations were printed by Green Field Paper on tree free paper that you can plant and wildflowers will grow!

You volunteered at a wildlife rescue and rehab center in college. What were some of the best parts about working with these injured animals?
The best part was when we were able to release them back into the wild, where they belong. Nothing is more magical than giving an animal its freedom. It is a truly beautiful moment.

In the future, do you see yourself being just as active and public with vegetarianism as you are with environmental issues?
Yes, I definitely would like to be just as active with promoting vegetarianism as I am with speaking out about environmental issues. They go hand in hand. [When] I give speeches on a regular basis, I am often discussing the environment and I always talk about the fact that the meat industry contributes more greenhouse gases into our atmosphere than all the planes, trains, cars, trucks, ships, and all other forms of fossil fuel based transportation in the world. Besides the obvious animal cruelty issues, going vegetarian can do wonders for our environment and for world hunger. Vegetarianism is one of the most important issues that is not talked about nearly enough. We hear a lot about alternative fuels and clean energy, but we need to be talking a lot more about our meat consumption. I know that it’s not realistic to think everyone in the world is going to become vegetarian, but if everyone could just start by reducing the amount of meat they consume, it would change the world for the better.

Georges has already blogged about his activism, participating in an anti-fur protest in Canada.

Making the plunge which involves eschewing dairy, eggs, and even certain types of clothing can be a challenge. Some may find themselves “going vegan” several times before they get it right.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 in Actors, Celebrity Tweets.

BAFTA/LA hosts The Second Annual British Comedy Festival held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills

(Singing). There he is. Mr. Twitter Universe.

He’s not quite wearing the crown yet, but Russell Brand is currently in second place for the title of Mr. Twitter Universe. Given his bad boy history, this honor better not be something that can be rescinded at the drop of a scandal, or he’s in big trouble.

A Russell fan has compiled a list of reasons why you should vote for him, which includes his love for animals.

“Russell has been a vegetarian since his teens, is a doting and devoted pet owner to his beloved cat Morrissey, and has twice been named Europe’s Sexiest Vegetarian by PETA. He’s currently in the running for Sexiest Vegetarian Alive – in fact, while you’re at it, pop over and vote Russell Sexiest Vegetarian Alive, too.”

Of course, Russell also has his own troupe of strippers @BrandyStrippers, so you know he’s the best man for the job.

Don’t forget to vote for Russell and read the entire top 10 list of reasons to vote for Russell as Mr. Twitter Universe at RussellBrandlove.com.

Matthew Fazzi Of Taking Back Sunday Needs VegOut iPhone App

D*CODED Launch Event Featuring Taking Back Sunday

Taking Back Sunday is about to release their newest album, New Again, on June 2nd.

Popwreckoning got a chance to chat with guitarist and back up vocalist Matthew Fazzi (shown on the right) before he jammed at a show in Kansas City.

Fazzi must work up an appetite during shows, because he was asking about checking out vegetarian restaurants afterwards.

PW: Well, you’ll have to be sure to check out the city after the show.
MF: Yeah! Do you have any suggestions?
PW: What do you like to do?
MF: I’m vegetarian, so if you know any vegetarian places that would be great. Parks, historical landmarks…

Of course, if Fazzi has an iphone (and like, OMG, who doesn’t?), he can install the VegOut application that lets you search for vegetarian and vegan restaurants and stores in any city or state.

VegOut was created by Champ Bennett, another musician and software designer on the side, after he found finding somewhere to eat in Europe a royal pain.

Musicians know best, Matthew. Take it from someone in the club and get VegOut already!

Update: Photo has been updated. Thanks guys.

Chace Crawford Sexes Up Big Macs: How Unsexy!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

2009 CW Upfronts in NYCWe learned earlier that Gossip Girl Jessica Szohr partook in some serious hamburger whoredom after taking a decade vow of meat celibacy.

We were disappointed this ex-vegetarian was so delighted at tasting meat in 10 years that she described it as “orgasmic,” so it comes as an even bigger blow that another Gossip Girl star, Chace Crawford, has also recently expressed his love for a Big Mac.

In the June issue of InStyle magazine, Chace was quoted as saying, “There’s nothing sexier than a Big Mac. I don’t eat a lot of them, but it’s just a whole complete package.”

Just what is so sexy about grilled bloody flesh, cholesterol card carrying mayonnaise, and a slice of cheese manufactured from milk taken from a whored-out dairy cow that will ultimately get the ax once a younger, sexier heifer who can birth a calf and produce milk comes along?

If you hear the gossip as to why the cast is so darn carnivorous, let us know.
