“10 Things I Hate About You” And Vegetarian School Lunches

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 in Children, Film & TV, Food & Drink, Videos.

Last week’s 10 Things I Hate About You featured Kat Stratford winning one for the team by getting her school to offer Meatless Mondays.

However, the student council member she teamed up with to get it passed didn’t tell her he was going to set up a pepperoni pizza stand on the same day declaring war on the vegetarian movement.

Ah, politics.

There is real progress happening in schools, however, to make vegetarian meals the norm, and the South Florida Miami-Dade school district has offered these for a long time.

Recently, the district added three new options to its menu: faux chicken nuggets, veggie burgers and hummus platters.

And no, kids aren’t pitching tents on the football field offering cold cuts to counteract this.

“We’re offering these items on the menu, and not seeing trays and trays go into the garbage can,” said Penny Parham to the Miami Herald, who oversees food services in the district.

If passed, the Healthy School Meals Act, H.R. 4870, introduced by representative Jared Polis, will offer school districts across the nation to test the introduction of vegetarian foods and non dairy beverages into their menus over the next couple of years.

Hulu has a pet channel, an all in one stop on the Internet for every good animal show, from Dog Town and Cesar Millan‘s Dog Whisperer to movies like The Lost Stallion to the clay animation of Wallace and Gramit.

It’s the Animal Planet of the Internet.

Like other Hulu shows, some of the episodes, clips and movies are more recent than others.

The clip below, from the Sundance Channel’s Big Ideas for a Small Planet, is about a woman who owns a natural pet foods store (ran with the assistance of her two Saint Bernards?).

Other clips from the channel feature the stories of dogs rescued in Iraq.

A recent article from a Northwestern University blog featured green pet ideas, from food to cleaning supplies.

Vegetarian and vegan pet food exists for both cats and dogs, but regardless if you choose to make your pet go veg, it’s always best to feed your animal food that is natural, organic and contains the fewest processed ingredients, according to Kelsie Dolezal, a certified veterinary technician at The Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine, adding that it’s not difficult to “make your own.”

“America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 14–The Value Of Faux (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Fashion, Models, Videos.

The gals from America’s Next Top Model Cycle 14 were recently taught a lesson on how to fake it.

To illustrate how buying knock off designs hurt the original designers, the models posed in everything fake–including fake fur.

According to the clip above, the fashion industry loses about about $9.2 billion dollars a year from counterfeit goods like the fake Prada bags the photographer pretending to be a salesman on the street was offering.

Of course, sometimes it’s good to be fake.

The costs of real fur?

According to Mercy for Animals, here is the bottom line.

“Of the 31 million animals killed on fur ranches each year, about twenty-six million are mink and 4.5 million are fox. In addition, 250,000 chinchillas, 150,000 sable, 100,000 fitch, 100,000 raccoon dogs (a separate species from the American raccoon), and a small number of lynx, bobcat, and nutria are fur farmed.”

Stella McCartney said that wearing leather is just plain trashy.

One contestant from Season 7’s Project Runway thought the same, so he proved even a trash bag looks better than animal hide.

The outfit, including the woven belt, is contructed entirely from Hefty’s, and is meant is resemble faux leather.

Jay Nicolas Sario said he thought of the words, “Sexy bitch,” when he created the outfit.

The judges are impressed and one said, We’ve seen many garbage bags on Project Runway, but never quite like this.”

Take a look and decide for yourself.

Could this faux be taken for real?

John Salley was recently interview by fellow vegan and journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell about his trip with New York city students to see Avatar, where he later discussed the benefits of a vegetarian diet on the Earth and ate a vegetarian meal with the children.

Jane and John talked about his mission to get America’s kids healthier and to combat obesity.

Maybe the answer is to feed children what they need and not what they want.

“They put vegetarian food in front of them when they were hungry. Some of them booed. Some of them awed. But at the end of it, they all were fed well,” Salley said.

John gets into the number of animals killed for food and makes a statement about how despite these millions, there is still poverty worldwide–indicating protein may not be the best way to feed the people.
