Jockey Liam Hollins The Favorite To Brutally Whip Horse To Kentucky Derby Win

The Kentucky Derby ends today, much to the relief of animal lovers everywhere that know many horses don’t make it through the race uninjured–or alive.

The Onion has provided a little satire to the situtation, as news anchors provide commentary on the champion “Horse beaters,” and the techniques they use to make horses race faster in a sport where “there are no rules.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 30th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Videos.

Tippi Hedren, founder of the sanctuary to 61 lions, tigers and other big cats, was recently on “The View From The Bay” to discuss the Shambala Preserve for cats and animal rights.

Tippi lives on the site of the sanctuary, and although tours are given once a month for a small donation, Tippi insists the animals aren’t there just to be watched and entertain, but it’s there “home.”

“I, along with millions of people are fascinated by the exotic feline,” the mother of actress Melanie Griffith says.

Dr. Neal Barnard Commercial For Healthy School Meals Act (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Children, Food & Drink, Politicians, Videos.

Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has recorded an advertisement that’s being broadcast in Washington, D.C., urging viewers to tell Congress to support H.R. 4870, The Healthy School Meals Act, which could potentially give schools the ability to offer vegetarian meals for lunch everyday.

Dr. Barnard uses a laboratory graduated cylinder to show the amount of saturated fat in a hamburger versus a veggie burger.

That’s some bad chemistry, man!

“Good Day New York” Anchor Suggests Vulgar Name For Soy Milk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Offbeat, TV Hosts, Videos.

If you’ve ever been ribbed about why soy milk is called milk because it doesn’t come from a cow, here’s another name, albeit vulgar, you can start calling it.

The anchors of Good Day New York were having this discussion because the National Milk Producer’s Federation thinks only products that come from lactating animals should be categorized as milk.

Co-anchor Rosanna Scott suggested soy milk be called “Soy jizzum,” getting both a giggle and embarrassed look from both of her co-workers.

But soy milk does not come from male reproductive organs either.

Patrick Stump On Whale Hunting And Our Sense Of Urgency (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Videos.

Patrick Stump was interviewed by Treehugger at The Climate Rally where he gave his thoughts on the importance of Earth Day.

Stump explained that taking steps to protect the environment is often like other tasks people do in the sense that they wait until it’s an urgent matter instead of planning ahead for the worst.

“I almost feel like there’s going to take there being like 10 whales left before someone to go, ‘Oh, shit, we should stop killing whales’,” he said.

Olivia Munn’s Three Ways To Help Animals (Video)

Olivia Munn recorded an interview with PETA to accompany the PSA she did recently where she posed nude to protest circuses.

Munn shared what she thinks are the three best ways for animal lovers to get active.

“One, stop going to the circus. Don’t buy real fur. Don’t buy a dog. Go and rescue a dog.”

Sounds pretty simple.

Dirt! The Movie, a film about the health of the Earth’s soil, is being screened across the country.

Dirt! was shown on PBS this week, and features interviews with Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, founder of Kenya’s Greenbelt Movement, mycologist Paul Stamens, urban farmers and female prisoners in Riker’s Island who are gardening behind bars.

What’s so important about getting dirty?

For vegetarians, the quality of our plant food depends on it.

According to the Huffington Post, it takes approximately 100 years just to create 1 inch of topsoil and the U.S. is letting its topsoil erode 10-17 times faster than it can be replaced.

Dirt! maintains that the first 6-8 inches of soil are crucial for maintaining life on the planet, and that tiny layer is being threatened by human mistakes like bad agricultural practices and pollution.

To find a screening of Dirt! new you, visit the film’s website and enter your zip code.

amfAR New York Gala To Kick Off Fall 2010 Fashion Week - Inside

The Independent Film Channel’s Dinner With The Band debuted its second season with host and chef Sam Mason inviting singer Rufus Wainwright to cook up schnitzel, spaetzle and sauerkraut.

The schnitzel, a dish traditionally made with meat anyway, was a rabbit rolled in breadcrumbs.

As a sheltered vegetarian who grew up on organic tofu and Amy’s dinners, only being forced to look at the norm animal entrees of chicken and beef, the idea of bunny burgers was unbelievable and required some extra investigation (April Fool’s is over, right?).

Those bunnies only exist to lay chocolate covered, cream filled Cadbury eggs around Easter.

Sure enough, there are even USDA recommendations for cooking Thumper, along with this “how to video” you’ll see below.

If future Dinner with the Band shows are anything like this week’s premiere, you need to run like the wind from this opening act before the main group even takes the stage.
