Lea Michele Shares Mom’s Vegan Friendly Lasagna Recipe (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Recipes, Videos.

Lea Michele recently became a vegan, but that doesn’t stop the Italian Glee actress from enjoying a plate of lasagna.

“I’m part of a traditional Italian family, so when I became a vegan, my mother learned how to make a version of lasagne I could still enjoy,” Lea said. “The idea of possibly going through the rest of my life without eating it was very upsetting!”

Lea is sharing her mother’s recipe for vegetable lasagna roll ups in the May issue of InStyle.

Vegan lasagna is incredible easy to make.

Substituting dairy cheese for a soy version like Chicago Soy Dairy’s “Teese” or Follow Your Heart “Vegan Gourmet” or “Tofutti” is the quickest way.

For a soft, more traditional ricotta cheese, soft or silken tofu seasoned with plum vinegar and soy sauce give taste alike versions even a non vegan would enjoy.

Eden Organic has a vegetable lasagna that utilizes such a tofu ricotta in one of their many recipes online.

George W. Bush Presidential Library Protested By Feral Cats [VIDEO]

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, April 24th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Humor, Politicians, Videos.

Jimmy Kimmel featured a funny video featuring cats recording a “We Are The World” like song about the plight of their eviction.

Definitely worth the watch for some good afternoon humor.

The planned George W. Bush presidential library on the Southern Methodist University campus is also home to feral cats that will soon face eviction.

According to the LA Times, a feral cat program was started by the university in 2005 in an effort to control the population, which has dwindled dramatically since its inception.

It’s expected that the remaining cats will be relocated to a nearby woods area.

One effective way at reducing feral cat numbers and improving their lives (and the accompanying problems such as loud noise from fighting behaviors, flea infestations and odor from males marking territory), is the use of Trap-Neuter-Return programs.

TNR cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated from rabies and surgically ear-tipped, which is the universal sign a cat has gone through the TNR system.

Vanity Fair Celebrates The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival

Martha Stewart‘s magazine Body + Soul, now known as Whole Living, treated New York city elementary school children for their efforts to bring awareness to Earth Day.

According to MNN, the magazine teamed up with the non-profit group PENCIL to sponsor an Earth Day poster contest.

Each school picked a poster from each grade to go on to the finals, where the children were rewarded with locally grown produce and dairy and eggs sourced from Stewart’s farm.

Last year Martha attended a launch party for Farm Forward, an organization that aims to move everyone away from factory farming and shift focus towards smaller, family farms that use more sustainable practices.

Martha allowed Access Hollywood to accompany her on her farm, which uses no pesticides.

“Everything can be picked off the plant and just eaten,” Martha says in the video.

Hedren’s life with big cats started in the 80s when she produced and starred in the film with African Lions, Roar, inciting her interest in the giant creatures.

Hedren was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards.

“It’s such a gift to have a mission that you feel really strongly about,” Hedren says in the video.

More information on the Shambala Preserve can be found on its website.

Paula Deen “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Cooks Non Pet Chickens (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 in Chefs, Not So Vegetarian, Videos.

Paula Deen was on Jimmy Kimmel last night demonstrating how to cook fried chicken.

A chicken that wasn’t her friend.

You see, Paula is an activist of some sort.

She has pet chickens that she calls “rescue chickens,” formerly sentinel chickens used to monitor diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.

She would never eat her pet chickens and said she loves opening her home to animals.

“I love anything with heartbeat to come into my house y’all,” Paula said while cooking the dead chicken.

“Okay. And now we’re going to fry something with a hearbeat,” Kimmel said.

“I don’t know them, and I don’t have a relationship with them. I’ve never scratched their ears,” Paula said in regards to the dead chickens.

Pet chickens= no food. Chickens you haven’t formerly introduced yourself to and scratched ears= fried chicken.

Sounds like Paula has a serious case of moral schizophrenia.

“Play Dead” Using Dead Animal Parts For Football Zombie Film

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 in Film & TV, Not So Vegetarian, Videos.

Play Dead is a new zombie comedy that combines the football fanaticism of Friday Night Lights with the horror of Night of the Living Dead.

A high school football team is murdered by a rival team in a football obsessed town.

A witch brings them back to life to take the championship and save their own souls, complete with gory play by plays.

In this clip, director Doug Sakmann makes a horse corpse from meat bought from a supermarket.

Completely disgusting and uncalled for, especially considering how easy it is to make fake flesh props for the screen like those used in Suck.

Feel sorry for actress Kate Boyer, who’s standing around the mess and is reportedly a vegan.

Stephanie Pratt only wears faux fur and doesn’t use cosmetics that are tested on animals.

Perhaps that’s why she chose to be the cover girl for PETA’s iphone application, Be Nice To Bunnies, that lets you search for cruelty-free cosmetics.

“I think it’s really important for people to be informed consumers,” Pratt says in the video.

“Animal testing is not a required law.”

Not to mention the fact the results found in animals don’t always apply to humans, resulting in undiscovered side effects in people.

Watch the clip to hear Stephanie explain more.

Find out more about Davey Havok’s Macbeth X Zu Boutique
shoe at peta2.com.

AFI and Blaqk Audio band member Davey Havok has designed a new pair of shoes in collaboration with MacBeth shoes, a very vegan friendly company.

In this video, Havok points out that every component of the shoe is animal part free, including the glue, which often is not.

“Sometimes you’ll find a shoe that you think is vegan, when sadly vegan glue is made of animals,” Havok said.

Hmm…think he means faux vegan glue is made of animals.

The shoes are available in limited edition and information on a nearest store can be located here.

If you’re feeling really lucky, enter to win a free pair.

Some men have commented on this site before about the lack of male vegan professional shoes.

Sorry to say these are still in the casual category, but maybe Davey will invent a “Day In the Record Company Corporate Office” line that will suit your fancy.
