Jillian Michaels Invites YOU To Contact Congress For Healthier School Meals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 16th, 2010 in Children, Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Jillian Michaels is asking parents to join her in writing to their representatives in Congress in support of H.R 5504, the Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act.

The bill would make more plant based meals available to students, as well as more fresh fruit and vegetables, improve safety conditions and make more children eligible for free or reduced lunch. The points are highlighted on the house.gov blog and include just a few of the following.

  • Establishing more farm to school programs and school gardens to connect children to local produce.
  • Improving food safety requirements in school settings, including better training for food service workers on food safety and quicker recall notification of foods.
  • Enroll children in school lunch programs through Medicaid/SCHIP data instead of requiring extra applications.

The bill also wants to provide the first increase in reimbursement for meals in 30 years–by a rate of 6 cents per meal.

“By the way, that’s not an ad for McDonald’s in case you missed that. The hamburger in a dead man’s hand. Yes, hamburgers kill. I just thought the Hamburglar stole stuff. He steals your life.”

Glenn Beck, during a recent segment of his talk show on the new ad created by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that’s airing in the Washington, D.C. area linking McDonald’s to heart disease. Not that Beck is championing the ad, of course. He later goes on to sarcastically suggest that people will automatically start running to carrots and suggests that although the ad is a “nudge” to encourage people to eat healthier, future initiatives could include punishment and jail time.

Nigel Lythgoe has learned through co-hosting So You Think You Can Dance that some of the best performance talent may originate from untrained, raw talent

And he recently learned you don’t have to scout a breeder or kennel for some of the best talent in the form of a canine companion.

When Lythgoe told a friend he planned to go to a breeder for a dog, the friend responded by saying, “I don’t know why you want to go through a breeder anyway. There are too many dogs in the world that haven’t got homes that are already alive.”

As the saying goes, “Friends don’t let friends drive to breeders.”

Jillian Michaels has whittled down her animal intake to sustainable fish, citing her reasons to the Houston Chronicle as being for animal welfare.

“Personally I’m not eating chicken or beef right now. It’s not about health; it’s about the slaughterhouse practices. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, organic yogurt and eggs and a lot of beans and nuts. But I also eat things like dark chocolate.”

Those who avoid red meat but still eat chicken may want to know that, according to the Humane Society of the United States, about 95% of land animals in the United States slaughtered for food are chickens, which undergo painful deaths to get to the plates of Americans.

Bob Barker made an appearance on Mike Huckabee‘s talk show, The Huckabee Show, along with Chuck Swift, captain of the MV Bob Barker, the anti-whaling ship named after the former Price Is Right host.

Both men discuss international whaling treaties and Sea Shepherd’s work. Barker says the goal is to sink the Japanese whalers economically and claims this past year was especially successful because the whalers lost money.

Barker is big supporter of Sea Shepherd, having donated several million dollars to the cause.
