Knut Polar Bear Death Blamed On Zoo

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 21st, 2011 in Animal Issues, Research + Science.

Knut, the beloved Polar Bear who captured hearts across the Globe far from his birthplace in Germany, has died at the young age of four.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has placed blame on the Berlin zoo that housed Knut. PETA Germany officials had warned the zoo Knut was under extreme stress, as was demonstrated by his compulsive behaviors.

What was one of the main culprits? Like most men, Knut had problems with women.

Remember those commercials produced by the Corn Refiners Association that touted the benefits of High Fructose Corn Syrup? Saturday Night Live has done its version of those commercials, mocking how the ads made those who were concerned about its effects look snobby and uninformed.

When mom 1 asks mom 2 if she’s really going to feed her child the HFCS drink, mom 2 replies the drink is simply, “made from corn, it’s natural enough and like sugar it’s fine in moderation.” She then remarks it’s not an easy decision between believing mom 1 and the “scientists,” since mom 1 is the stay at home mother who “drinks wine at 10 a.m.”

Mom 1 backs off and tries gentler conversation, complimenting mom 2 on her sweater. That’s when mom 2 confesses it used to be her daughter’s, but the daughter grew out of it. As the camera points to the daughter–drinking yet another glass of HFCS juice–it’s easy to tell the only “growing” the child has accomplished is the fat cells in her mid section and jaws.

The two original commercials for HFCS can be viewed below.

Waka Flocka Flame

After learning how animals are killed for food, Waka Flocka Flame gave up more than his clothes like he did for his recent PETA PSA against fur.

In an exclusive, behind the scenes video with PETA, Waka says he doesn’t even eat red meat anymore, citing the treatment of animals for food as one of his reasons.

Lent is approaching, and many are considering giving up what they consider pleasurable foods such as chocolate and meat. If they continued giving up animals products long after the holiday is over, what are some benefits they might gain?

Medical benefits range from the bones to the bowels.

Here are a few reasons to give up red meat like Waka, from The Independent.

Bowel Cancer: People who eat several portions of meat per week are 30% more likely to develop bowel cancer than those who eat less than one portion per week.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Researchers at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) suggest red meat may cause a buildup of Iron in the brain. To make a long story short, your brain gets rusty.

Blair River "Heart Attack Grill"

Blair River, the spokesman for Heart Attack Grill, a restaurant known for its unhealthy, super-sized fatty meals like the Quadruple Bypass Burger and Flatliner Fries, has died at the age of 29.

Besides promoting dishes with names to match the medical conditions one might develop if they ate there regularly, Heart Attack Grill offered anyone who weighed over 350 pounds free food.

Some are pointing a finger to flu or pneumonia as the reason for River’s death.

According to some experts, his weight–575 pounds–may have played a factor in him succumbing to the virus. Yes, along with high blood pressure and heart disease, washing down fries cooked in pure lard with the butterfat shake may prevent some from fighting off what simply throws everyone else in bed for a week or two.

Zac Brown Band

The Zac Brown Band‘s lead singer Zac Brown may have ruffled PETA feathers when he said chicken was the new tofu, but he’s proving he’s not completely turned off by vegetarian food.

He wanted Parade magazine to know the spicy, ginger marinade he was planning to market was vegan.

And now, we learn a camp for children with neurological disorders such as Tourette’s, ADHD and Asperger’s Disorder may have a vegan-friendly menu.

Thumbs Up Cat Jimmy Is Tough Critic (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Humor, Offbeat, Research + Science, Videos.

Anyone who’s ever owned a cat knows how picky the little creatures can be.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they gave you the “thumbs down” when they didn’t like the new litter instead of defecating outside the box?

Jimmy is a polydactyl cat, meaning he has a congenital physical anomaly that causes more than the usual number of toes on his paws. You may find more cats like him on the East Coast of the United States or in South West England.

Jimmy is one opinionated cat who puts the movie critics to shame.

We bet Jimmy gives thumbs up to spaying and neutering, shelter adoption and lots of love. Thumbs down to buying pets from shops and that annoying dog next door that jumps over the fence just to bark at him and poop in yard.

Rachael Ray Was Right–Pit Bulls Are Nicer Dogs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Chefs, Research + Science.

Rachael Ray

Rachael Ray said she was devoting her life to only owning pit bull dogs because she wants to prove there are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners.

“I just think it’s my mission in life to prove to people that there’s no such thing as an evil animal,” Ray said. “There are only evil humans.”

The Food Network chef now has data to back up her opinion, as a study conducted by the American Temperament Test Society showed pit bulls scored higher in tests that measure a dog’s ability to get along with people and other animals.
