Potatoes

What on earth!

The powers to be have decided that white potatoes aren’t nutritious enough and WIC recipients (mothers and kids eligible for assistance because they’re living at a certain poverty level) shouldn’t be buying them.

The head of the Washington State Potato Commission disagreed and put himself on an all potato diet, losing 20 pounds in 2 months while doing so, to prove potatoes are indeed good for you and should be included in the WIC program.

Chris Voight’s typical meal plans would include “3 pounds of mashed, 2 pounds of sliced and fried, and 2 pounds of roasted, snack-cubed red and fingerling potatoes” given a special kick with spices like rosemary, thyme, oregano and dill. Sometimes he’d mix in bouillon cubes and gravy for a “special treat.” For Thanksgiving, it was a tur-tato, a turkey shaped potato.

In news of sick, disgusting and what a stupid idea, we bring you the latest product of Van Couver entrepreneurs TheCheeky.com.

A piggy bank made from a real pig is available for $4,000, but so far, no one is rushing to stand in line to purchase it like the Tickle Me Elmo annoyance who inhaled too much laughing gas years ago.

“We’ve had a few emails today saying some not very nice things to us,” said Ryan McCormick, one of two entrepreneurs behind the online shop. “Some death threats and many calling us disgusting pigs.”

South Park Mocks Gulf Oil Spill Events (Videos)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 in Environment-Eco-Green, Film & TV, Humor, Offbeat, Videos.

Just like it lampooned Whale Wars, South Park doesn’t spare satire when it makes fun of environmental events, including the ones surrounding the Gulf Oil Spill in recent episodes.

Tony Hayward‘s apology is mocked, an all-knowing Captain Hindsight who solves problems after the fact is created and more.

Learn what happens when a bake sale is proposed to raise money for the cause and hear Captain Hindsight’s “hindsights” after the jump.

Britain’s oldest man turns 108 this week, reports the Daily Mail.

The Rev Reg Dean, as his name suggests, has been a minister and served as an army chaplain during the Second World War. He was also a teacher and helped start a male choir of which he is still the president.

When asked his secrets to longevity, he replied he had five secrets: “Good friends,” “religion,” “looking for the best in people not the worst,” and “being a vegetarian for 30 years,” but he couldn’t remember the 5th one.

Well, he is 108, you know.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 22nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Offbeat, Videos.

Stewie, a 5-year old Maine Coone, has just made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Longest Cat. At 48 1/2 inches, Stewie is just a tad over 4 feet, making him as tall as your average 10 year old boy and long enough to ride the exciting rides at the carnival.

Stewie’s owner, Robin Hendrickson of Reno, Nevada, says Stewie’s fame and presence make him the perfect candidate to teach children and others about caring for animals. For some children, it will at least scare them into being nice to kitties.

Some people are either really turned on by vegetables or have really dirty minds. We don’t want to know the details of their sex lives.

A finalist in Britain’s Got Talent sustains her energy by following a vegetarian, organic diet.

She’s also enjoys being petted by fans.

Twelve year old Chandi is the dog of 37-year old Tina Humphrey from Shropshire, and the two are finalists in the talent reality TV show, with Chandi carrying the bulk of the talent.

It should come as no surprise that Chandi will only eat meatless–organic vegetables and cheese, because that’s what all serious professional athletes do.

“She’s on an organic raw food diet too – she is an athlete after all,” Humphrey told The Sun.

Chandi’s favorite treat is mild cheddar and although the brand can vary, it’s imperative that it’s organic.

Wonder if Chandi lets off less rear end steam due to her diet, like Alicia Silverstone‘s dogs did when they went veg.
