The Americas Business Council Opening Dinner to Celebrate the 2010 Courage

“Are there moments where I’m fearful? No. I’ve been doing it all my life. It’s just like a routine kind of thing. I’ll be doing this until I die. I don’t think you really have to retire from what you do.”

“I was able to go out and interview farmers and learn so much, and I brought home a lot of the ideas. It changed things in my own home. We did a lot of talking about organic and why to buy local and how to go to a farmers’ market. There’s so much cancer in the US now and there’s got to be a reason. Let’s give ourselves a fighting chance by eating organic and eating fresh vegetables. That’s heading in the right direction.”

Jennie Garth, on her campaign with Hidden Valley Ranch that’s designed to teach parents to convince their children to eat more vegetables. As a mother, Garth is probably also interested in the recent study between inorganic produce and ADHD in children, yet another reason to eat and buy organic!

“People are really liking that all-natural niche. It’s something that people are recognizing, that you have to put good stuff in your body because it affects what you get out of your body.”

Tony Gonzalez, during an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on his protein powders, All-Pro-Science, one of which is completely vegan, sourcing protein from brown rice, pea and hemp.

Eh, maybe not everyone wants it as natural as Tony and his wife prefer it for this ad against fur, but yeah, you get the idea.

“If I was just another vegetarian, tree hugging, biology graduate asking people to give up meat and stop using plastic bags, I don’t know how many people would be listening to me. But because I drive a race car, I have an ability to reach a new audience of people that most environmentalists are probably not talking to.”

Leilani Munter, (from Savings) race car driver who’s publicly spoken out about environmental and vegetarian issues, and often incorporates green themes into her racing, such as placing recycled bins at the track and selling t-shirts made with recycled materials.

Leilani recently took the time to record a PSA on the oil spill in the Gulf Coast. Sure hope her influence helps prevent a catastrophe like this again.

Dedication Ceremony for PETA's Bob Barker Building

“About 20 years ago I was chairman of Be Kind to Animals Week in L.A. I was invited by different organizations to participate in their activities. As I did, I began to become aware of the terrible exploitation of animals in the world and felt compelled to try to rectify the situation. And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.”

Bob Barker, on how he became involved in animal rights, especially by donating money to various organizations, including setting up an Animal Law program at a university and helping PETA renovate a building for their Los Angeles headquarters. Recently, lion cubs freed under the new Bolivian law banning animals in circuses were sent to a refuge made possible by a generous donation from Barker.

“It’s really about evaluating what you eat every day. If you’re familiar with the methane that beef production creates, it exceeds all of our combustion engines combined. Meatless Mondays is not that hard for anybody. It’s probably easier to do than organic. I’m trying to make sure we all have a bridge between ideology and reality.”

Mario Batali, on why he chose to adopt Meatless Mondays in his 14 restaurants.

“I’m not entirely sure who understands and who doesn’t understand what it is that we’re doing, but something I wanted to do with those pro-vegan shirts, was to create a very poppy, very palatable image that draws people in and that will appeal to people and then have it juxtaposed with a very serious message – to really drive that message home. Because if you’re drawn in with something pretty and then you’re met with something serious you’re already there. I think it would be difficult to not understand the message of those shirts but a lot of people are really obtuse, so there’s no saying.”

–AFI’s Davey Havok, on his line of t-shirts at Zu Boutique ,which convey information about veganism and eating animals through animated pictures, such as a hamburger with arms and legs with the caption “It’s alive,” above it.
