Toronto Fashion Week Has Fur Flying

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 in Fashion, Fur.

Milan Fashion Week Autumn 2006: Day 2

Like shows in New York and Milan, fur is unfortunately being featured as a big trend for fall/winter 2010 at the annual Toronto Fashion Week.

Promoters of fur sometimes tout the material as being sustainable.

Fashion journalist Adrian Mainella said, “People don’t typically discard fur products as readily as they do cloth products, windbreakers, coats, synthetic sweaters. They usually keep them and pass them down.”

Ideally all fur wearers would continually donate, pass down or pass around their furs among other fur lovers, thus eliminating the need to produce more.

However, despite Mainella’s claims that furs stick around for a long time, every year designers introduce new collections, resulting in more animals killed and more chemicals given off in the environment that cause multiple health problems in humans.

Mainella said the designers in Toronto’s show work in collaboration with the North American Fur Trade Association, an organization that sets standards that include giving animals a “sleeping gas” to kill them, versus more painful methods allegedly used in other countries.

However, this does nothing to ameliorate the stress of an animal being confined in a cage until it awaits its fate.

At least Mainella is respectful of animal rights protesters and their opinions.

“For those who protest or speak to animal rights, I mean that’s the beauty of this country — you should be able to voice your opinion,” he added.

“But at the same time, those who care to participate in purchasing things like fur and buying meat in their groceries or poultry or those who enjoy leather products, they should be able to freely do the same.”

The fur stops flying in Toronto this Thursday when fashion week ends.

“Chelsea Lately” Host Chelsea Handler Rips Kelly Bensimon For Fur

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 26th, 2010 in Fur, TV Hosts, Videos.

Chelsea Handler is giving Real Housewives of New York City star Kelly Bensimon a piece of her mind many other animal lovers share.

Handler discussed Bensimon’s recent rave about fur, where Bensimon said something to the effect that although she loves animals and never advocates hurting them, she doesn’t see a problem with wearing fur.

She also obviously doesn’t see the contradiction in her statements, but Handler on E! attempted to clear things up for her.

“Really? You don’t abuse animals? I think the chinchilla who just had his hide ripped off might disagree. You think you’re a great fur wearer? You know who wears it better? The innocent animal it came from. This is not a smart move. You just taunted PETA on national television while wearing an unattractive fur vest.”

WNBA player Candace Parker put the basketball down for a moment to let everyone know wearing animals for fur should never be part of the game.

The MVP and Rookie of the year brought along her rescue dog Fendi, who steals just as much of the camera as Candace does.

“I feel very passionate about the fur campaign for PETA,” Candace says in the video below. “I feel like it’s very cruel-what they do to animals. I love my dog and couldn’t imagine anybody harming her.”

Paul McCartney Supports Israel Fur Ban

67th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Paul McCartney is voicing his support for a fur ban in Israel.

A bill proposed by the animal rights group Let The Animals Live, is asking Israel to be the first country to ban the sale, import and export of any kind of fur.

“I, along with members of my family, have been long-standing opponents of the commercial fur trade,” Paul said. “The reason for this is simple — fur is cruel and unnecessary . . . To skin an animal alive — as many are — for a product nobody needs is beyond comprehension.”

“By banning such a cruel industry, Israel would provide a shining example in care and compassion that others would be sure to follow,” he added.

PETA took a poll with the International Anti-Fur Coalition and found that almost 80% of Israelis disagreed with wearing fur for fashion.

However, Heeb magazine has offered its satirical take on this.

The website features pictures of Jewish men wearing fur hats with captions such as “Nothing is more comfortable than wearing my fur hat in Jerusalem. In summer” and “An animal may have died, but my giant head feels super holy as well as “This thick layer of animal hair protects the deep Talmudic thoughts in my brain.”

Heeb questions whether Hasidic Jews are ready to give up their fur hats.

As long as there is faux…it can happen!

Tattooed Dave Navarro is giving an almost full frontal view of his body to promote the cause of saving animals from the fashion industry.

Back in his earlier rocker days, Navarro wore what he calls “over the top outfits” that contained fur.

These days, he’s happy with his own skin decorations.

“Some of the simple things you can do to help save animals is not buy fur, stay away from products that have been animal tested,” he told PETA. “It’s really very, very simple to just support something or buy something that doesn’t brutalize animals like this.”

Navarro scores another point for the gentlemen in the category of sexy PETA ads.

Twiggy Disappointed By Fur At London Fashion Show

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 in Fashion, Fur.

Celebrities Attend Marks And Spencer Shop Opening

Twiggy isn’t happy about the use of fur at this year’s London Fashion Week, and cites a new investigation by Animal Defenders International as a reason to boycott both fur and the designers who use it.

“I hope this ADI report helps the fashion industry realise that these poor animals are kept in such terrible and inhumane conditions,” said Twiggy, who’s real name is Lesley Hornby. “Is it really worth this cruelty just for fashion’s sake? I don’t think so.”

The new report details the conditions the animals are kept in at factory farms in Finland, a supplier to the UK.

Twiggy called using 20 foxes or 80 mink to make a single coat “intolerably cruel.”

“I am very sad that some designers are still using real fur when the fake alternatives are so effective and so easily obtainable,” she said.

The Daily Mail says fashion experts are reporting that Peter Pilotto, Caroline Charles, Matthew Williamson and Todd Lynn are all still using fur.

Billboard magazine featured the singer and mentioned she posed in a faux fur coat for Q magazine.

This would put her at the opposite end of the spectrum from her pal Adam Lambert, who she recently shared a lip lock with.

Lambert said real fur not only looks great, but added, “I didn’t kill the thing, so I don’t see why I can’t wear it.”

Sigh…dear Adam, would  you want your skin to be used in someone’s Glam Rock performance?
