Nellie McKay

Nellie McKay incorporated some animal rights/veg lyrics in the song “Unknown Reggae” from her latest album released this past fall, Home Sweet Mobile Home.

With its upbeat tempo, Unknown Reggae may not seem like a song about serious activism, but listen carefully and you’ll hear McKay singing about a hamburger being someone’s mother. Could this happy tune be a way to easily introduce music enthusiasts to the idea of veganism without giving them a lecture?

Nellie tells Philly.com:

“I understand how the flesh is weak, and food is one of the only things you can count on at the end of the day. Animal rights, even more than human, is hard to make palatable because the truth is so horrible. But this song is fun to sing, and the band sounds great on it. I’d love for people to listen to it and change their diet, go animal-free. But you don’t have to be a healthy vegan. There’s still a lot of junk food to enjoy. Nobody who comes to my house can believe all the oil, the fake butter, the bags of potato chips laying around.”

Listen to McKay’s Unknown Reggae, which begins around minute 4:30 in the video below.

48358, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Thursday December 9 2010. PETA protesters grab publicity for their cause during the Lady Gaga Waxwork unveiling in London. The girls, who were dressed in outfits made of cabbage leaves, took the opportunity to gain publicity outside the Gaga event and hand out vegetarian sausages. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals . Phototgraph: Smart Pictures, PacificCoastNews.com PETA ladies dressed in greens were on hand at the unveiling of Lady Gaga‘s wax figure at the Madame Tussauds Museum in London to hand out free veggie sausages. Gaga’s wax image joins the collection of several famous people including David Beckham, Britney Spears, Prince Charles and Barack Obama. A sharp contrast from Gaga’s meat dress that got media attention months ago, the women in cabbage outfits were probably a little chilly, since most people don’t wear hats, scarves and mittens with bikini tops. The Pretenders

Chrissie Hynde‘s been eying different cities to launch her second Vegiterranean, a vegan Italian restaurant she opened in her hometown in Ohio a few years ago. While those of us in the U.S. would love a Chrissie dining establishment near us, she’s thinking about taking her business down under. In an open letter to Melbourne, Australia, published in the Herald Sun, Hynde discusses the possibilities of setting up vegan shop there, taking advantage of the numerous local farmers and vendors to provide the freshest ingredients. She is impressed by Melbourne’s green attitude, both food-wise and for their transportation. “Been exploring Melbourne. Mainly nosing around to figure out if my vegan restaurant would fly here. I think it would. Yes, a Vegiterranean in Melbourne. Local produce, local investors, local flavour. There’s nothing like it here and I think the climate is perfect – progressive, health conscious – animal friendly?” (more…)

Kate Nash

Kate Nash has some quirks, like her OCD, which made her go vegetarian. But for a gal with anxiety, amazingly, it’s not being thousands of feet above ground the makes her nervous. It’s the food she might encounter on the flight.

“I’m not scared of crashing or turbulence,” Nash told the Columbus Dispatch. “I hate the food, so I always make a packed lunch”

The holidays are moments away and if you prefer the friendly skies to get over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s, you should know the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine has researched and found the best airports for healthy vegan and vegetarian food. If flying out of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, you’ll have it made. Taking off or landing in Las Vegas or Washington, D.C, however, may be a problem.
