Quantcast Vegetarian StarKate Nash Airline Food Anxiety And Which Airports Serve The Best Veg Food

Kate Nash

Kate Nash has some quirks, like her OCD, which made her go vegetarian. But for a gal with anxiety, amazingly, it’s not being thousands of feet above ground the makes her nervous. It’s the food she might encounter on the flight.

“I’m not scared of crashing or turbulence,” Nash told the Columbus Dispatch. “I hate the food, so I always make a packed lunch”

The holidays are moments away and if you prefer the friendly skies to get over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s, you should know the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine has researched and found the best airports for healthy vegan and vegetarian food. If flying out of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, you’ll have it made. Taking off or landing in Las Vegas or Washington, D.C, however, may be a problem.

PCRM gave an airport an overall score by dividing the number of restaurants offering at least one healthful item by the total number of restaurants in the cafe court.

The good news is that the majority, 79% of airports, offered at least one restaurant with one healthy option.

Here’s a breakdown of the best and the worst.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (100 percent):
“Every airport restaurant now offers at least one healthful entrée, such as the veggie sushi at Musashi, the hummus veggie wrap at National Coney Island Express, and the vegetable sandwich (hold the cheese) at Earl of Sandwich.”

San Francisco International Airport (94 percent):
“San Francisco is this year’s most improved airport, rising to 94 percent from 77 percent last year. Hungry travelers can enjoy a vegetable curry and rice plate or vegetarian chow mein at the Harbor Village Kitchen or a vegetarian gyro from Max’s the Greek.”

Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (66 percent):
“Although Las Vegas pulled out of last place in 2007 and 2008 after spending three years at the tail end of PCRM’s report, the airport has plunged back to the bottom of the heap. While travelers do have a few healthful options—including the vegan wrap at Burke in the Box—too many eateries offer only burgers, sausages, hot dogs, or pre-made items full of fat and cholesterol.”
