Alicia Silverstone‘s vegan diet, lifestyle and cookbook, The Kind Diet, has been released in paperback form.

The paperback edition contains the same useful information about transitioning to a vegan diet, whether you’re interested in eating a few vegan meals a week or going totally raw. The Kind Diet also educates readers on the animal welfare and environmental reasons that motivate some to go vegan.

What’s great about the paperback edition is that it was created in an environmentally friendly manner. The book uses soy ink and is printed on recycled paper. Not only does soy ink produce less harmful chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOC), it also makes recycling the paper it’s printed on easier because soy ink  is easier to remove from printed paper.

As expected, Silverstone is touring to promote the paperback edition. Check out the dates below to see if she’s coming to a town near you.

Whole Foods is sponsoring the Do Something Reel Film Festival, a collection of films featuring green and environmental themes that will show in commercial theatres across 70 cities from April 1 to mid-May.

The six films examine issues of sustainability the world faces today, with a heavy emphasis on food.

We suggest everyone watch Planeat, a film that looks at Western culture’s obsession with meat and dairy and gives evidence showing a more veggie-based diet could benefit both the environment and human health.

Vincent Kartheiser Calculates His Carbon Footprint

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 11th, 2011 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink.

Vincent Kartheiser

Mad Men‘s Vincent Kartheiser is the kind guy you can’t help but admire for his green attitude. He spends very little time in a personal vehicle, doesn’t want to procreate and empties his vegetarian digestive system of the 3-bean, brown rice, tofu, kale and spinach in a 7-grain tortilla wrap into his neighbor’s toilet to save water.

And this guy loves fast trains.

But there’s more.

Kartheiser is happy to spread the word and let others know how they can measure their carbon footprint.

During a recent interview with Good.is, Kartheiser discussed using carbon calculators.

“I try to do a little of what I can in my life to reduce my impact. A lot of people do. Maybe they’re vegetarians. Maybe they don’t have a lawn. Maybe they don’t drive their car all the time. There’s this website where you can check your carbon footprint. [Ed note: We’ve always been partial to this carbon calculator from University of California, Berkeley.] You put in what your gas bill was, what kind of car and how many miles you drive, if you’re a vegetarian, and so on.”

Vegetarian Esai Morales and several other celebrities have autographed several flameless candles produced by Enjoy Lighting that are being auctioned off for charity.

Three candles containing autographs from well known Hollywood figures such as Jayde Nicole, Terell Owens and Chaz Bono will be available to bid on from now until Sunday, March 20th at Auctioncause.com and all proceeds benefit Stand Up 2 Cancer.

Ran on batteries and powered by LED light sources, flameless candles provide an excellent alternative to soot burning ones for both safety and environmental purposes.

With a genuine wax exterior, the candles provide the beauty of burning ones but will not produce soot that contains carcinogens like toluene and benzene.

Vincent Kartheiser has already greened his life by taking the bus or train instead of a car, eating vegetarian and using his neighbor’s john.

Now Kartheiser and his Mad Men co-star Rich Sommer are starring in a PSA for high-speed rail that was created by the public-interest advocacy group U.S. PIRG.

The video is set to debut this Wednesday, March 9, but U.S. PIRG posted a teaser on their Facebook page last week.
