Babies is a 2009 French documentary chronicling the lives of four children in different countries and cultures, from birth until one years of age.

The stars of Babies are Ponijao from Opuwo, Namibia; Mari from Tokyo, Japan; Bayar from Bayanchandmani, Mongolia; and Hattie from San Francisco, USA.

Hattie is the child of two vegetarian parents who are very much into green living. Obviously their diet and lifestyle sets them apart from the majority of Americans, and in an interview with LilSugar, mom Susie Wise indicated the film has inspired her to allow her child to grow up thinking even more freely.

Michelle Obama hosted several celebrities chefs at the White House garden, including Rachael Ray and Cat Cora, to harvest vegetables with school children to prepare a meal for the group to eat. Unfortunately, not every part of the meal was vegetarian, but the First Lady encouraged the chefs to help schools nationwide plant gardens.

About 900 chefs are signed up in the “Chefs Move to Schools” program, which pairs chefs with school communities to teach children and parents cooking skills and nutrition.

“You know more about food than almost anyone, other than the grandmas, and you’ve got the visibility and the enthusiasm to match that knowledge,” said Mrs. Obama during a speech.

The actual footage of the chefs and children harvesting vegetables from the garden takes place around minute 19:00.

Erykah Badu "Vibe"

Erykah Badu is burning up the stands, appearing on yet another magazine cover this month.

First, there was the JET issue, and now Vibe features Badu on the June/July 2010 edition.

Inside Badu discusses how both her diet and her family decisions have permanently changed her life.

“I was 27 when I had Seven. I was already a vegetarian. I had been for 10 years. I had started making choices that would shape me for the rest of my life. I never thought to measure by each child. My children are six years apart. It wasn’t planned, just how the relationships rolled out. I’ve had three unorthodox marriages of sorts. I’ve had the benefit of having substantial amount of time with people, mind-building time.”

Disney Restructuring To Bring Layoffs

Disneyland is giving families the opportunity to pre-order meals when visiting the California park’s World of Color exhibit that premieres on June 11, 2010. The show, at Disney’s California Adventure, part of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, features over 1200 fountains, laser lights, fireworks and colorful projections on screen.

By going online, guests can order boxed picnic meal options and two vegetarian meals available include the Mediterranean Vegetarian (marinated grilled vegetables in a whole wheat wrap with roasted garlic hummus) and a children’s meal of The Lunchbox Classic (peanut butter and jelly).

Hopefully, Disney will also use some of its organic produce in the pre-ordered meals.

“I was able to go out and interview farmers and learn so much, and I brought home a lot of the ideas. It changed things in my own home. We did a lot of talking about organic and why to buy local and how to go to a farmers’ market. There’s so much cancer in the US now and there’s got to be a reason. Let’s give ourselves a fighting chance by eating organic and eating fresh vegetables. That’s heading in the right direction.”

Jennie Garth, on her campaign with Hidden Valley Ranch that’s designed to teach parents to convince their children to eat more vegetables. As a mother, Garth is probably also interested in the recent study between inorganic produce and ADHD in children, yet another reason to eat and buy organic!

Vegan chef Christina Pirello took to the Huffington Post to discuss how fast food companies like McDonald’s have lured children into their restaurants through the use of clever, cheerful marketing and a few plastic toys here and there.

“Since the Happy Meal hit the menu under the Golden Arches, childhood obesity has ballooned from 4.2% to 17%, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This hugely successful public relations brainstorm, linking cheap food with cheap toys (which actually dates as far back as free junk toys in Cracker Jacks and cereal boxes and on top of Ovaltine jars) led corporation after corporation to see the opportunity to make money off your kids’ desires. Before long, all that disposable plastic junk found its way into almost every bag of high-fat, high-sugar meal while hawking the movies your kids are dying to see.”

List Of Vegetarian Kids Books–Jonathan Safran Foer’s Not Writing One

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 28th, 2010 in Authors, Books, Children.

When author Jonathan Safran Foer appeared on The Ellen Show, a nine year old girl said reading the book with her mother had inspired her to start drinking soy milk and buying cage-free eggs. She also asked if he planned to write a similar book aimed at children. The answer was no, he was only interested in writing fiction from there on out.

Fortunately, there are dozens of books aimed at children and adolescents that focus on vegetarian living and values.

This is Why We Don’t Eat Animals is one that teaches the relationship between food at mealtime and animal suffering and environment issues if that food is meat or dairy.

Other children’s books that contain vegetarian related themes include Hope, based on a true story of a pig found in a dumpster that was rescued and taken to a farm sanctuary. ‘Twas the Night before Thanksgiving features the story of school children who rescue eight would be dinner turkeys during a class field trip to a farm.

These and other books can be found on a list at humaneeducationteacher.org.
