Vegan actress Emily Deschanel will be honored at Mercy For Animals’  “Justice for All: A Night for Creatures Big and Small” event on June 2nd. The evening is meant to celebrate Mercy For Animals’ legal advocacy work for farmed animals, including increased animal protection laws, prosecution for abuse on farms and improved animal welfare conditions.

Ian Somerhalder is taking a bite out of animal neglect and troubled children. The Vampire Diaries actor is building a sanctuary for both animals and children with behavioral issues on a farm he plans to buy in Louisiana.

Somerhalder, a recent recipient of the Humane Society’s Wyler Award, said the sanctuary will not only house animals, but employ children who’ve been accused of bullying to work with and care for the animals, hopefully leading to a change in behavior for both human and non-human.

Ellen DeGeneres is the spokesperson for this year’s Adopt A Turkey event from Farm Sanctuary.

The vegan actress is asking everyone to adopt a turkey that resides on the sanctuary grounds in lieu of having one on their dinner plate.

“Did you know that every year between 250 and 300 million turkeys are bred for slaughter in the United States?” DeGeneres asked. “More than 46 million for Thanksgiving alone. So, this Thanksgiving instead of eating a turkey, please join me in adopting one from Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project and you can give a turkey something to be thankful for.”

According to the Humane Society of the United States, the purpose of the partnership is to, “promote respect, protection, and compassion for animals around the world.”

One way the vegetarian TiK ToK singer is accomplishing this is by using her fan base to raise money for animal charities.
