Heather Mills Vegan Businesses Skating On Thin Ice

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 1st, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink.

ABBAWORLD Exhibition - World Premiere Arrivals

Heather Mills‘ is a vegan entrepreneur who’s business accomplishments include acquiring Redwood Whole Foods company and opening a vegan cafe, V Bites in the UK.

But could her high hopes of being a successful veggie business guru be smashed by financial issues?

The Daily Mail reports recent low customer numbers at the V Bites Cafe and says profits at Redwood are at best modest, based on her possible plans for expansion.

“At present, although Redwood has a £3million turnover, its profits are pretty modest – in the last accounts they stood at £309,000. Not really a yearly sum that can keep Heather at the rate she is spending.”

Heather insists on giving back to communities, as her Hunts Point Alliance Charity continues to serve impoverished families in the Bronx in the U.S.

‘I have created a free cafe for the people to eat whenever they want,” Mills said.

“The million dollars are in the bank for them. I have given my life to charities.”

BabyCakes LA–A Sweeter New York Bakery

The LA offshoot of Erin McKenna‘s bakery for vegan, gluten-free and sugar free desserts, BabyCakes, has been open for a couple of weeks now.

If you had the opportunity to visit the New York bakery and are expecting the same delicious animal free yumminess, you’re in luck.

But be prepared for a few extras in terms of the store’s environment, according to McKenna’s blog.

“Although we wanted to recreate what we have in New York, we knew it was crucial to let this bakery be free to be itself. We wanted it to have it’s own life and personality so we just let it flow. This bakery’s got more room than New York–4 tables and chairs to rest your weary legs and a gasp-inducing vintage oil painting of two poodles with bouffants (thank you Bridget!). Of course we have Stumptown Coffee.”

Head over to the downtown LA bakery at 130 East 6th Street and rest your weary legs as you sink your teeth into a Red Velvet cupcake.

Forbes Publisher Rich Karlgaard Praises Vegan–“The Engine 2 Diet”

Forbes Magazine

Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes magazine since 1998, pays his premiums to the best health care plan in the world–a vegan diet.

Karlgaard took to his blog to discuss how eating mostly vegan helped him shed pounds and shared his thoughts on what the typical vegan is like.

It’s not just for the hippies, you know. Even the three piece suits on Wallstreet can enjoy soba noodles.

“The notion of a vegan diet is repellent to a lot of men and especially conservative men,” Karlgaard said. “If you’re like me, your mental picture of a “vegan” might be that of an eco-hippie or a PETA purist or someone who eschews deodorant as well as meat. That’s increasingly inaccurate.”

Along with the stereotype of vegan men, Karlgaard bashes the notion all veggies live in southern California.

One well known vegan book by Rip Esselstyn proves that.

“If you want to learn more about vegan diets without the annoying eco-lecture that often goes with it, I recommend The Engine 2 Diet. The author is a former pro triathlete and now a firefighter in Texas.”

“Vegans in Texas? Heck, yes.”

Alicia Silverstone Loves Earth Balance Vegan Butter

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 in Actresses, Business, Food & Drink.

Alicia Silverstone The Kind Diet Book Launch Party

For those that choose the vegan path or with intolerance/sensitivity to dairy products, Alicia Silverstone recommends a cow-free butter on her Kind Life website to substitute on baked potatoes, cookies and more.

“Whenever I find a recipe that calls for a butter substitute, I always use Earth Balance! I’ve experimented with a lot of brands, and this one is my hands-down favorite! You can get it in tubs or sticks… just like real butter. It’s so versatile and you can get it at most supermarkets and health food stores.”

The guys (and gals) at Earth Balance really know their butters.

Besides tubs, Earth Balance vegan butters come in sticks as well and feature several blended varieties such as those with or without soy and olive oil.

Peanut and almond butters are also available.

Christina Applegate knows where to get the good pizza in Chicago.

Or does she?

In a recent Tweet, Applegate seemed tired of veggies and wholesome wheat crust.

“My favorite is in Chicago at Due’s or Gino’s. And NY pizza anywhere there. I don’t want whole wheat, soy, veggie, blah!”

If Applegate is still a vegetarian, that only leaves cheese as a topping!

Who can resist the Gino’s Vegetarian with asparagus, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, red peppers, yellow squash and zucchini?

Is Chi-Town the place where Christina cheats?

Or does she prefer Gino’s four cheese with a garlic butter base?
