Jillian Michaels "The Master Your Metabolism Cookbook"

Jillian Michaels "The Master Your Metabolism Cookbook"

Jillian Michael‘s new cookbook, the follow up to last year’s diet and health book, Master Your Metabolism, has just been released.

The Master Your Metabolism Cookbook is filled with 125 recipes and The Biggest Loser coach’s pumpkin cranberry muffins are vegan.

The muffins are sweetened with maple syrup and use coconut and olive oils in place of butter.

Because of its higher saturated fat content, coconut oil was once thought of as the black sheep of vegetable oils.

While partially hydrogenated or processed coconut oil should be avoided, unprocessed varieties in moderate amounts are beneficial, as they’ve been shown to both treat hypothyrodism and boost the immune system.

15th Annual Los Angeles Times Festival Of Books - Day 1

Alicia Silverstone spoke at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this past weekend where she promoted her vegan lifestyle and diet cookbook, The Kind Diet.

She revealed that wearing a maternity suit while acting in the play Time Stands Still, was fun, and that she can’t wait to get pregnant.

“I’ve been wanting to have a baby since I was 2 years old – I’m destined to be a mother,” she said.

When she finally is carrying child, Silverstone is sure discuss details of her pregnancy, including how it affects her vegan cravings.

Bet she’ll even make her own vegetarian baby food, something a registered dietitian from Vegetarian Resource Group says is easy to do and includes recipes for suggestion on the group’s website.

Given the fact that so many female vegetarian celebrities complain of and give into meat cravings, it will be refreshing to hear the nine month experiences of a staunch vegan activist who will most likely not cave like the rest.

Mario Batali “Molto Gusto” Lets You Meet New Vegetables

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 in Books, Chefs, Food & Drink.

Premiere screening of Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Remember when you tried a shiitake mushroom for the first time?

Different in taste and texture from the white button ones you consumed on pizza at the county fair, yet a great experience that hopefully led to many more.

Mario Batalis latest cookbook, Molto Gusto, may have you meeting new vegetables, according to The Buffalo News.

“Some of the vegetables in “Molto Gusto” are relatively obscure – salsify, cardoons, black kale, sunchokes – but the breadth of vegetable preparations in “Molto Gusto” is infectious. Armed with Batali’s suggestions, it seems, readers could tackle almost any vegetable they bring home.”

Let’s get to know these one at a time.

Sunchoke: Jerusalem artichoke
Salsify: A flowering plant, also known as goatsbeard. Described as having the taste of oysters.
Cardoon: May be used as a vegetarian source for enzymes in cheese production.
Black Kale: Member of the cabbage family nicknamed Curley or Dinosaur.

We’re thinking meeting them all in a big taste test would be awesome.

Kinda like vegetable speed dating.

Sarah Silverman "The Bedwetter"

Sarah Silverman "The Bedwetter"

Besides being about pee, Sarah Silverman‘s new book, The Bedwetter, is a memoir filled with childhood and adolescence memories, both painful and hilarious.

One of the more undesirable memories Silverman has is when several high school athletes held her down in the school cafeteria and put cold cuts in her mouth because she was a vegetarian.

“Yeah, it was awful. It really felt rape-y,” Silverman told Vanity Fair.

Disgusting.

Were they expecting to make foie gras out of her?

Sure hope those bad boys got more than a few days of detention.

Jillian Michaels "Master Your Metabolism"

Jillian Michaels "Master Your Metabolism"

Jillian Michaels, one of the coaches from The Biggest Loser, has a diet and health book, Master Your Metabolism: The 3 Diet Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormones for a Hot and Healthy Body!

The three themes for the book are Remove, Restore, and Rebalance, which reference to changing the foods that go into your mouth in order to achieve a healthier system (metabolism) that will enable you to lose weight.

Along with resources like shopping lists, tips for eating out and how to eat on a budget, Master Your Metabolism contains recipes.

This is an entire chapter featuring vegetarian main dishes, which is a plus, but it’s a little disappointing that Jillian didn’t choose to make these the focus of the recipes in her book, as she’s a pescatarian who will only eat sustainable seafood.

Most of the foods on her top 10 recommended list, however, are vegetarian–nuts, seeds, legumes, organic dairy, whole grains, fruits and dark, leafy vegetables.

Biggest Loser 6 Weeks To A Healthier You

A brand new cookbook featuring contributions from The Biggest Loser contestants and staff is out, and season 6 competitor Nicole Michalik has contributed her delicious meat and dairy free recipe in Biggest Loser 6 Weeks To A Healthier You.

“Broke Bean Stew” features vegetable broth with your choice of chickpeas, kidney beans or black beans seasoned with onion, garlic and cumin among other spices and herbs.

“I love, love, love! It’s high in protein but totally vegetarian. It’s so easy to make and freezes very well. I make it at least once a month,” said Michalik.

And since there aren’t many ingredients in the recipe and beans are relatively cheap, you won’t go broke if you choose to make it several times a month.

This is definitely the kind of food vegetarian coach Bob Harper pitches on the show.

Moby Therapist Reminds Him Of Smoothie Affirmations

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 in Books, Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

24th Genesis Awards - Arrivals

You already know that Moby is sensitive about his pancakes.

Thankfully, he does have other talents to help his self-esteem, and a therapist one day reminded him of what a great smoothie maker he was.

Still, it doesn’t help when you insult his pancakes.

“A few years ago, I was in therapy and my therapist kept asking me to name some things I did well. I mentioned making smoothies. It was sad that I couldn’t think of something more significant. It’s açaí juice, almond milk, frozen bananas, blackberries, spirulina powder and cacao powder. I put it in my crummy blender and make one smoothie. I take my ugly, dark, purple smoothie and I sit at my laptop.”

Smoothies are a class in their own, which is why you aren’t likely to find too many cookbooks with an entire chapter devoted to them.

Who needs them anyway, when you’ve got Smoothies: 50 Recipes for High Energy Refreshment, which utilizes soy, yogurt and milk to instruct you how to whip up the perfect fruit concoction.
