Kimberly Wyatt

Former Pussycat Dolls member Kimberly Wyatt has joined a group of celebrities and cosmetics companies that do not test on animals in a campaign with the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) to end the sale of cosmetics in the European Union that have been tested on animals.

In 2003, the European Union passed a ban on using animals to test cosmetics that began in 2009. A complete ban of the sales of these animal-tested cosmetics is set for 2013, but some officials would like to extend that deadline.

Wyatt also has her own make-up range that is not tested on animals.

“My make-up range BM Beauty is approved free from animal testing by BUAV proving that there is no need to test beauty products on animals. Don’t delay the ban on selling cruel beauty products in the EU any longer. Say NO to Cruel Cosmetics.”

Betty White is almost in the nonagenarian club!

The actress and animal welfare activist turned 89 recently and appeared on The View to discuss her latest projects, an indication she’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Barbara Walters reminded White that during one interview she told her she liked animals more than people.

“That’s true,” White said, eliciting laughter from the group. “I don’t make it a secret.”

“They never lie to you. You know when they tell you something, they mean it. They love you unconditionally,” White continued.

It’s no surprise this actress has been active with the Morris Animal Foundation, a research group that has aimed to improve the lives of dogs by conducting studies on dog bite education and creating ways to determine a dog’s compatibility in the home.

Russell Simmons recently chatted with Don Imus on Imus In The Morning and the two spent a considerable time discussing Simmons’ veganism. Here’s a little bit from the conversation.

Simmons: It’s one of the worst karmic disasters in human history. Fifteen billion suffering farm animals.

Imus: People, who, for example, go get a big ol’ bucket of chicken. The way those chickens are housed and slaughtered and tormented. I really think you’re taking on the karma of the chicken. These are tormented, tortured animals. They can feel pain just like you can.

One interesting twist: Imus is a vegan too. He’s also a cattle rancher. Watch the clip to hear Simmons’ response to the idea of Imus’ support of humane slaughter of animals.

Bob Barker

Bob Barker has donated $250,000 to help Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, California recover from a flood in December. The disaster robbed the center of $250,000 to $300,000 of damages and a sea lion that was rescued from the waters later died at an evacuation center.

“I welcome this opportunity to help the Pacific Marine Mammal Center resume operations as soon as possible,” said Barker. “However, I hope the public will continue to contribute generously to the Center to help treat the hundreds of seal and sea lion patients that will be in need of care this season.”

Barilla Pasta Goes Cage-Free With Some Eggs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 13th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Business, Food & Drink.

Barilla Pasta

Barilla Pasta has announced it’s switching to cage-free eggs for 45% of its eggs by the end of 2011, Treehugger reports.

A cage-free environment allows the hen to do many of its natural behaviors, such as nesting and spreading wings, and therefore is said to lessen stress on the animal. Just imagine yourself not being able to scratch that area or, ahem, adjust yourself when the moment is right because you share space so cramped with other humans.
