—Mike Tyson, who’s starring in an Animal Planet series about pigeon racing, “Taking On Tyson,” which premieres March 6th. Some animal rights activists have criticized pigeon racing, as it requires birds to be given antibiotics for illnesses and race in adverse weather.

How do you feel about this? Should Mike Tyson show the birds love by instead donating to a bird charity or opening up a sanctuary?

Mario Batali and Alton Brown have both made resolutions this year to eat more animal and environmentally friendly. Batali says he will learn to cook more vegetarian meals while Brown, who is already eating mostly pescatarian, will start eating eggs from chickens he raises in his backyard so he won’t have to “worry about the chickens welfare, or what’s in the egg.”

There may never be a rendition titled, “Rudolph got blown up by Sarah Palin” because the former governor of Alaska and vice-presidential candidate’s TLC show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” has been axed.

The first episode drew a record 5 million viewers, but that success dropped quickly to 40% by the second episode.

Of course, there were animal killings and controversy.

Back in April 2010 when she helped the Postal Service launch a pet adoption awareness stamp series featuring adopted animals, Ellen DeGeneres vowed to make the year even more friendly to shelter animals by donating one million meals to them if enough people bought the stamps.

That goal was reached just before Christmas last year.

“We are thrilled with the success of the campaign and the incredible number of supporters who helped us to achieve this goal,” Halo’s CEO Steve Marton said in a press release. “It’s our mission to make a real difference for pets.”

A total of 100 different shelters benefited from Halo’s and animal lovers’ generosity.

NASCAR Pets Calendar

Greyhounds aren’t as fast as Tony Stewart‘s car, but they’re still impressive little creatures.

Greg Biffle is a NASCAR driver who, along with his wife Nicole, founded the Greg Biffle Foundation to promote the well-being of animals through the automotive racing industry.

Biffle has published a NASCAR Pets calendar featuring drivers like Biffle, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Tony Stewart with their non-human family members. Proceeds go to a variety of animal welfare organizations, such as spay and neuter clinics, the Humane Society and no-kill shelters.

The calendar sells for $13.99 and is available from Biffle’s Foundation site.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are breaking a long tradition in royal weddings that some are speculating has something to do with influence of animal rights groups.

According to Hello Magazine, Kate will travel by car to the ceremony instead of the traditional horse-drawn carriage. Royal brides have arrived via Glass Coach since the early 1900s.

The Telegraph has noted this could also be for security reasons, but it suggests animal welfare could have played a part in the decision.
