Moby Answers If Animal Agriculture Is Okay

24th Genesis Awards - Arrivals

The book edited by Moby and Miyun Park on factory farming, Gristle, isn’t meant to be a vegetarian or vegan converting source.

As co-editor Park said, “This book isn’t about veganism, and it isn’t about bringing down the animal agriculture industry.”

In fact, some contributors are even part of the meat industry.

So why would Moby, a vegan for two decades, decide to partake in something that doesn’t outright condem using animals as food?

Moby answered to Philly.com:

“The book is about presenting people with the facts and ramifications of factory farming and large-scale industrial animal production. What people do with the information is up to them. There are so many different types of animal agriculture, from the pernicious to the relatively benign, so it’s hard for me to make any huge blanket statements.”

Bottom line is, Moby isn’t using Gristle to tell you if consuming or using animals to produce food is okay.

That’s a decision you’ll have to come to on your own.

Pamela Anderson Visits Illinois

In last night’s Dancing with the Stars, each competitor had to tell a story through their dance for the evening without using any props.

Vegetarian and animal activist Pamela Anderson danced her legs away to a paso doble, and pretended to be a gypsy Flamenco dancer in both awe and disgust by the matador.

“I’ve always been an animal activist and always think bullfighting is senseless and violent,” said Anderson. “I think it’s a dance with the devil.”

Will Pamela’s story of passion for both a man and animals be enough to keep her from elimination?

You’ll have to watch the results show tonight at 8/7c on ABC to find out!

Emily Barclay Wants You Educated About Pigs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 5th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

The 2009 Inside Film Awards - Arrivals

Emily Barclay would like you to know a few things about the animals that you eat the next time you sit down at the dinner table.

“I’m not against people who eat meat but I’d like them to know what happens in a factory farm where highly intelligent animals like pigs live horrific lives,” Barclay told Confidential.

Rolling Stone featured an article several years ago describing the conditions pigs lived at a Smithfield Foods farm, a leading producing of pork.

“Smithfield’s pigs live by the hundreds or thousands in warehouse-like barns, in rows of wall-to-wall pens. Sows are artificially inseminated and fed and delivered of their piglets in cages so small they cannot turn around. Forty fully grown 250-pound male hogs often occupy a pen the size of a tiny apartment. They trample each other to death. There is no sunlight, straw, fresh air or earth.”

“Taken together, the immobility, poisonous air and terror of confinement badly damage the pigs’ immune systems. They become susceptible to infection, and in such dense quarters microbes or parasites or fungi, once established in one pig, will rush spritelike through the whole population. Accordingly, factory pigs are infused with a huge range of antibiotics and vaccines, and are doused with insecticides. Without these compounds — oxytetracycline, draxxin, ceftiofur, tiamulin — diseases would likely kill them. Thus factory-farm pigs remain in a state of dying until they’re slaughtered.”

Is this a place where you would send your 3-year old to day care?

According to GoVeg,  pigs have the intelligence level beyond a child of the same age and are the smartest animals outside of primates.

Oprah Magazine Live Your Best Walk Benefits Animal Sanctuary

German Erotic Magazine Sues Oprah''s "O" Magazine

O, The Oprah Magazine has named Best Friends Animal Society one of the 10 non profit organizations that will benefit from its Live Your Best walk on May 9.

Best Friends Animal Society is the nation’s largest shelter for abused and abandoned animals.

Given the fact that Oprah herself was named Person of the Year for her contribution to animals by featuring adoption and factory farm segments on her show, it’s no surprise an animal organization made the top 10 cut.

The Live Your Best walk is part of a three day celebration in New York to commemorate the magazine’s 10th anniversary.

Has it really been that long?

Hats off to The Oprah Magazine for celebrating its success by giving animals a chance at some.

Jane Goodall Favors Good Diet, Staying Active To Plastic Surgery

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 2nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Authors.

The 2009 Women's Conference - Day 2 - Long Beach, California

Jane Goodall, primatologist, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a magnificent leader for humanity is well into her 70s, but age hasn’t slowed her down much since she first stepped foot on Lake Tanganyika, in what is now Tanzania’s Gombe National Park.

During a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Goodall gave her secrets to longevity and energy.

“I have to say that I attribute vast amounts of my energy to the fact that I stopped eating meat,” Goodall said.

“One thing I learned is that we have the guts not of a carnivore, but of an herbivore. Herbivore guts are very long because they have to get the last bit of nutrition out of leaves and things. The carnivore guts are very short, because they want to get rid of the meat quickly before it starts putrefying and doing bad things inside them.”

Goodall is younger than ever at heart and although she’s quite the celebrity, she has no time for any “nip and tuck” and thinks women who are worried about aging should focus on keeping active, both physically and mentally.

“I mean, yes, you can have millions of face lifts and all these different things that women have done to their bodies – whatever they’re called, bum tucks and boob enhancements [laughs] – but personally, well: A) I haven’t the money for that, and B) I haven’t got the time for it and C) I mean, there are more important things to me than how you look.”

Ladies, if one of the most famous animal scientists in the world discusses bum tucks and boob enhancements, you’d better heed that advice!

Trader Joe's Opens Its First Store In New York City

Pescatarians rejoice, Trader’s Joe’s has announced it will shift to sustainable seafood purchases by the end of 2012.

The company says the decision was based on customer feedback regarding issues of food safety, taste and environmental concerns.

Trader Joe’s has agreed to the follow practices:

  • Work with third-party, science-based organizations to establish definitions and parameters for addressing customer concerns about overfishing, destructive catch or production methods, and the importance of marine reserves.
  • Remove “red-listed” seafood from their shelves. Trader Joe’s stopped selling Chilean sea bass in 2005, orange roughy in July of 2009, and red snapper in March of 2010.
  • Provide accurate information on all seafood labels, including species’ Latin names, origin and catch or production method.
  • Use their buying power to leverage change in the seafood industry.

The decision has been applauded by Greenpeace, which issued a statement on their website.

“We applaud Trader Joe’s commitment to creating a strong sustainable seafood policy. We are particularly happy to see Trader Joe’s acknowledge that we need marine reserves, and that species like Orange Roughy and Chilean sea bass are incompatible with a sustainable seafood operation. We know their customers will appreciate their recent statement of intent. After all, seafood consumers deserve access to transparent, accurate information about the products they choose,” said Senior Markets Campaigner Casson Trenor.”

A couple of years ago, Triumph The Insult Comic Dog spoke to Doug Abel from the sanctuary on who picks up the poop at the sanctuary, the politically correct definition for an animal that hasn’t yet been adopted, why animal rights activists are so dorky and more.
