Tis the season for vegan on Top Chef.

Although that dreadful Hardee’s Thickburger commercial star Padma Lakshmi still hangs around cheering for steak, more vegan moments are occurring on the Bravo Network Reality TV series.

We already know vegan actress Natalie Portman will be popping in sometime.

And next week, actress and singer Zooey Deschanel will make an appearance.

The chef contestants will have the challenge of preparing a meal for Zooey and her friends.

Not only must the chefs make a vegan meal, it needs to fit Zooey’s dietary restrictions of gluten-intolerance and no soy.

Watch Zooey send a special message to the chefs, prepping them for the competition.

When Kal Penn and co-star John Cho finally made it to White Castle in the first of the Harold and Kumar series, Kal chowed down on vegetarian “White Castle burgers” specially prepared for him.

Have you ever wondered what goes into those beautiful food scenes on television? How does a vegan actress appear to be eating turkey, when it’s really made of soybeans?

The New York Times has the lowdown on several grub events that took place in Hollywood film, and what went on behind the scenes so the actors could munch smoothly.

In the 2008 film, Pride and Glory, for example, three of the actresses were vegetarian or vegan, including Lake Bell.

Ruth DiPasquale, an assistant property master for the film, called a vegan chef to help create a Christmas dinner scene with ham as the centrepiece. Bell and the other veg actresses ate pieces of “sham ham.”

Says the New York Times:

“She ended up piling slices of sham ham made from soybeans near the real stuff, careful to make sure the two versions never touched.”

Superheroes: What Would Emily Deschanel Do?

(500) Days of Summer Los Angeles Premiere

Instyle.com caught up with several actresses at Comic-Con to ask what they would do if they could be superheros.

Emily Deschanel’s superhero vision isn’t that far fetched, as there are already plenty of ladies putting cabbage around their bodies.

“I’d wear a lot of lettuce and turn everything into vegetarian meals. I could turn everybody into vegans and stop all cruelty in general.”

Sounds like the ultimate superfantasy.

What would you do if you played superhero for a day, week, or forever? Allow endangered species to thrive? Veganize all fast food restaurants? Chit chat with your favorite animal friend?

Gwyneth Paltrow has gained some criticism from the UK vegetarian group Viva! (Vegetarians International Voice For Animals) for demonstrating how to cook roast chicken on her Goop website.

Although once upon a time Gwyneth professed to follow a macrobiotic, vegan diet, her actions over the past year, including wearing fur for a photoshoot and demonstrating how to cook turkey for Thanksgiving, have both disappointed and disgusted her vegetarian fans.

“To hear of a so-called vegan promoting the use of chicken meat is extremely disappointing,” Juliet Gellatley, Viva!’s director, said.

“It not only condemns the cruel conditions that millions of these birds are forced to exist in, but it also shows complete disregard for the damage that the meat industry – including chicken production – is doing to an ever-fragile planet and to peoples’ health.”

“If Gwyneth wants to promote healthy eating, she should think twice about cooking chicken.”

“A medium-sized bird contains almost a pint of fat. It also releases cancer-causing compounds when it is cooked”

“We encourage Gwyneth to rethink her diet. She obviously does care, but needs nudging back in the right direction to veganism”

Yes, back to the direction of vegan B.L.T.s.

“I only wanted to do something that hadn’t been done before,” Silverstone told WWD. “This is a conscious product line that is good for the planet. Unless you need it, it’s just stuff,” she added.
