Erin McKenna, founder and owner of BabyCakes has recorded a short clip for Business Insider on how she started one of the most popular vegan bakeries in New York City.

McKenna has published two cookbook and received praised from dozens of vegan dessert loving celebrities like Zooey Deschanel, Kiernan Shipka and Jason Schwartzmann.

March 11 marked the start of Be Cruelty-Free Week, a celebration of the European Union’s decision to ban the marketing and sale of cosmetics newly tested on animals.

Several celebrities have voiced their approval of the ban, and have signed the Humane Society of the United States and the Human Society International Be Cruelty-Free Pledge.

Award winning singer-songwriter and vegetarian Colbie Caillat said:

“Everyone wants to look their best. And it’s great to know we can look and feel beautiful without causing pain to animals. The HSUS/HSI’s Be Cruelty-Free campaign is urging companies to stop testing their products on animals. There are so many great products, from skin care products, to shampoo, to makeup, that are cruelty free–there’s just no reason to buy anything else.”

Washington Post food editor Joe Yonan has an interview with NPR on his recent decision to go vegetarian and devote his regular newspaper columns to plant-based eating.

Yonan’s “coming out as a vegetarian,” as NPR puts it, as a writer for a major national paper isn’t the only thing that sounds odd and surprising.

Yonan also hails from cattle country.

He grew up in west Texas eating “steak and barbecue and all sorts of meaty goodness.”
