“The devastation inflicted on our environment by factory farms is something we all have the power to stop by doing something as simple as ordering a veggie burger instead of a meat one. Please join me in taking the pledge to go meat free for a day, a month or longer. It’s a lot easier than you think, and let’s be real, all burgers taste the same with ketchup.”

Jason Schwartzman, who voices a new short film about the effects of factory farms and the environment, What To Eat. Schwartzman is seen below in a 30-second promo for a site where you can learn more about eating better for the environment, platetoplanet.org.

Top Chef Masters had a healthy twist for their most recent challenge. Three meals had to be prepared for “The Biggest Loser” elimination round, where a day’s worth of entrees had to equal less than 1500 calories.

No problem for a vegetarian chef like Suvir Saran, who uses low-fat sources of protein like beans and lentils in his dishes and has refused to bend during the season, cooking plant-based meals for every challenge.

Jamie Oliver appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live with the superintendent from the Los Angeles Unified School District, John Deasy. The two made the announcement that starting next fall, flavored milks like chocolate and strawberry will no longer be served at schools because of their sugar content.

“There’s more sugar per ounce in flavored milk than there is in a can of soda,” Oliver said. “If you think about a little 4-year old to an 18-year old [drinking this] sometimes twice a day–just flavored milk–in their time at school and then you’re worried about diabetes?”

There is a slight catch to the deal though. If the school system can find flavored milks without added sugar, it may reintroduce them back into the cafeterias. And unfortunately, there is still not enough talk about adding a non-dairy beverage to school menus like rice, almond or soy.

Oliver and Deasy can be viewed below.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 28th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Politicians.

In what may be the most humorous ad released by the group yet, PETA is capitalizing on the controversy of whether or not Obama was born in the United States.

At Donald Trump‘s request, the President released his birth certificate, showing he was born in Hawaii.

PETA took the opportunity to remind people they don’t need papers to certify any dog’s birth and whether or not it’s a purebred or a mutt.

“Whale Wars” Season 4 Premiers On Animal Planet June 3 (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Film & TV, Videos.

Whale Wars will begin its 4th season in the Southern Ocean on Friday, June 3rd at 9:00 p.m. on Animal Planet.

The series, which has been nominated and received several prestigious film awards, will show Captain Paul Watson and his crew fighting to protect whales in the waters by thwarting Japanese whalers. Season 4 will feature several new additions to the crew’s equipment, including a new vessel named Gojira, a helicopter, secret GPS devices and more.

It’s a risky job, but it’s one that has continuously caused a decline in the number of whales killed every year and caused whalers to completely abandon the hunt prematurely last year.

“In order to save the whales, people have to be willing to risk their lives,” Watson said. “We can’t stop whaling? That’s what they once said about slavery, but it was stopped. So yes, we can stop whaling.”

Below is a sneak peek from season 4.

Actor Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore, Scott Pilgram vs. The World, Bored To Death) has narrated a short film on the effects of the meat industry and the environment.

This isn’t a dry lecture that spits out facts, but an entertaining flick which features a day in the life of a man (Schwartzman) who wakes up one morning with the same question everybody does, “What am I going to eat today?” and starts it off with bacon and eggs.

Suddenly, Schwartzman’s entire day–from driving to work to sitting in the office to shopping for dinner–is filled with messages about the destructive effects of meat and the environment. From reading the morning newspaper to stumbling on a website at work, each encounter Schwartzman has brings him closer to the realization that factory farmed meat is destroying the Earth and causing health issues for humans who don’t even eat it.
