Memorial Day is one of those meaty holidays where you demand the carnivores cook something veggie far, far away from the meat on the grill. It’s nice of them to do that, but if you’re an extreme health veg diva, it isn’t enough to throw a handful of greasy, salty potato chips on your plate next to your oat and lentils burgers.

Can we get a nutritioius, veggie chip to complement that veggie burger?

To borrow a slogan from a past presidential campaign, “Yes, we can!”

Actor Mark Ruffalo will be honored at Global Green USA’s 15th annual Millenium Awards, meant to recognize green celebrities who live by Global Green USA’s mission by “fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world.”

Funds raised from the event go to Global Green USA’s initiatives to provide environmentally friendly housing and educational facilities in cities like New Orelans and Los Angeles.

Slash

Several celebrities including Slash and Lisa Edelstein are starring in a PSA for the Shark-Free Marina Initiative meant to raise awareness and stop the killing of sharks for recreational purposes.

During the clip, stars ask what a world without sharks would be.

Since these creatures are the ocean’s largest animals and top predators, their disappearance would be devastating, causing collapse of the food chain where smaller fish become overabundant and an entire ecosystem is left unbalanced.

About 73 million sharks are killed every year just for their fins during a gruesome practice that leaves them in the water bleeding for dead.

“Subjecting animals to pain and suffering just so that we can produce a new shade of lipstick or eye-shadow is simply cruel and unnecessary in this day and age. EU politicians promised to ban the sale of cruelly-tested cosmetics by 2013 and I sincerely believe they should honour that ethical pledge.”

Mary McCartney, on the European Union delay to ban the sale of animal tested cosmetics. Although animal testing was outlawed in both the UK and Europe, products that contain animal tested ingredients are still being sold. A ban on such products has been delayed several times over the past few years, and officials are still considering delaying the new 2013 deadline.

Tyson was partially motivated to go vegan because there is a history of obesity in his family. He also didn’t want his children to grow up unhealthy and wanted to set a good example.

The vegetarian or vegan athlete isn’t the rarest species, but it sure is great to see one featured in a prominent recreational magazine read by thousands of running enthisiasts around the world.

Runner’s World, a publication of Rodale Press, has featured an interview with Jeffrey Eggleston, a seasoned marathoner who’s been chosen to run for the U.S. this summer at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
